Imagining League Realignment

Re: Imagining League Realignment

How many times does it have to be said that Hockey East WANTS Notre Dame? That's not something that needs to be questioned any more, it's well established.

Hate to agree with The Cloud, but I can't imagine why HE wouldn't want Notre Dame either. Before all this craziness happened I too didn't envision the league changing, but when as a conference you have an opportunity like this you grab it. As far as a 12th team goes I have no idea. CT would be a good fit if they upgraded the facilities. Until then I'd rather not take a team that's an afterthought to its own school.

This is a nice slippery slope to me...I see HEA adding Notre Dame and someone else to get to 12 and then I see 6-8 of the HEA teams splitting off like what happen out west.

Agreed. Notre Dame joining does make that possible. Its like all these AD's woke up at the same time to the concept that they can make money on college hockey.

Re: Imagining League Realignment

Here are some recent population figures for some metro areas in which schools are located (or close by) which might be interested in joining an eastern super league. My guess is that size of potential market may be just as important to the tv guys who could be dangling the dollars as traditional rivalries and size of student or alumni body or some other measure of fan base.

Its so obvious! Why didn't we add DU while we had the chance! Get that killer Denver market and the killer South Bend market!

Re: Imagining League Realignment

What would be actual news is if the Gophers made some of these away games. I can't wait to see how the B1G responds to that.

Motzco says “The details will all be worked out, but there will be games in our building and in their building (in the series).” I don't know how you read that, but it sure looks to me like the Gophers will play road games for some of these games.

Wow, I didn't see that. Forgive me, but it's summer, and I don't exactly read good around that time. (Grammar pun intended.)

I have been saying that for sometime. The Gophers will play all the Minnesota schools every year and it might include potential upstart Minnesota State-Moorhead. IMO, it just makes sense.

Re: Imagining League Realignment

It looks like the Gophers will use 10(Including MN-Mo) of their potential non conference games on Minnesota schools. My guess is they keep the Mariucci classic for teams like the ECAC, HE, CCHA and AHA. IMO, it will be interesting what the Gophers do with their last two games. Outside of UMD I just don't see many of the schools in the BHHC on the Gophers schedule. So long UND, DU, CC rivalry we will see you once or twice a decade. Sad.

I'm sure it goes back to the Minnesota mentality. From http://coolbythelake.com/?p=2679 Former Bulldogs and Michigan Tech men’s hockey head coach Mike Sertich on the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference: “I was a bit taken by the move. While I understand the reasoning, I feel for those that were left behind. We asked so much of some these programs to join the league and now it appears that we abandoned them. I hope that we grow hockey with this move and that some of these programs do not die. Have we forgotten St. Louis, Kent State, Ill-Chicago? John Marriucci told me a long time ago, ‘Don’t forget about the emerging programs.’ I wonder what he would say today?”
Don Lucia and Minnesota feel they need to help them and support college hockey in Minnesota.

I saw that in another thread. Good quote. The Gophers will play every Minnesota school every year. Awesome!

I don't know if I can see Minnesota using 10 games a year on Minnesota schools. I guess I could see 2 games in the Minny tournament, 2 games against the teams left over, a 2 game series at marriucci for 1 of the teams in the tournament and 1 game at the other 2 teams in the tournament. so thats 8 total. I guess I am excluding Moorhead then. Who knows how this all works out.

This is what I think will happen. A.) 20 BiG B.) 6 MN WCHA, 8 if MSU-Mo C.) 2 UMD D.) 2 Mariucci Classic E.) 2 Dairy Queen Cup F.) 2 NC Imo, it all changes if MSU-Mo joins the icebox.

Hmm, I wonder if the left out Minny team would be invited to the Classic each year.

Re: Imagining League Realignment

But they can't offer scholarships so they probably deserve that tag.
I don't follow... How does "no scholarships" = "small" and "scholarships" = "large"? There's no necessary correlation between the two in all cases. There are very small schools that offer scholarships (i.e. Merrimack, LSSU, St. Lawrence) and mid-sized to large schools that do not (i.e. Ivy Leagues, RIT). I would accept the tag of "unknown", "unheralded", "unfamiliar", "mid-major" or something of that ilk for RIT. But "small" is incorrect. RIT enrolls 17,000+ students. Whether or not they offer athletic scholarships is irrelevant. We are not a small school.

I think you're going to see UND and the Goofs playing in hockey... They Gophers are all about making money and they are going to want to stuff their arena full of fans.
