Illegal Immigration IV: Amnesty For Some, Miniature American Flags For Others

Re: Illegal Immigration IV: Amnesty For Some, Miniature American Flags For Others

Hmm. Well, that is a consistent application of the philosophy that there is a single, eternally unchanging meaning and if you want to change the application it's because the original interpretation was wrong. I don't subscribe to that view (I think the meaning has to be fluid enough to evolve to new circumstances or it becomes obsolete the moment the ink is dry), but OK, I can at least see the coherence of what you're saying.

Your argument that "baby mills" mean we should scrap birthright citizenship is a logical fallacy, like saying because criminals take advantage of the fifth amendment, we should scrap the fifth amendment.
Nobody is saying birthright citizenship should be scrapped. You keep spinning it in ways nobody is saying. It's a matter of what birthright citizenship was intended to be and/or should be. Basically you're arguing that even if a law was misinterpreted for 100 years or more, we should just keep misinterpreting it (recognizing that not everybody thinks it's misinterpreted).

I guess they should get a pat on the back for stealing someones identity, identity theives are such a great addition to our society, I think most people call them felons but...

Of course not. Them's the breaks. You buy a stolen social security number, that's the risk you run.

I simply intended to dispute the notion that once they cross the river or fence, they're home free; that they've hit some sort of jackpot or a bonanza of "benefits."

They live the life of a fugitive from the law, because that's what they are. It's no different than the life of an escaped convict.

I just think it's amusing when people whine about all the "benefits" these people get as illegal immigrants, when in actuality they're living a life you wouldn't wish upon your worst enemy.

Bob, I'm not trying to "spin" anything, I'm trying to understand what you want. What is your interpretation of birthright citizenship?

The poor have it easy, too. Also minorities and women. It's a helluva handicap being a white male property owning taxpayer, take it from me.

The bottom line is a handful of Republicans talk tough and are stars on hate radio but even they know Congress won't take any action on the issue because their <del>corporate sponsors</del> campaign contributors are afraid to lose their cheap labor force. That leaves people to demagogue on the issue and demonize opposition, while knowing nothing will change - even when they have the majority of both Houses, the SCOTUS and the White House (see: abortion).

Do I really need to explain this to you? Really?

It helps when you have to explain the jokes. It makes them funnier. Really.

Well, if you were really blaming it on Latin, you would've said vaeya, not via. 'i' in Latin = long e in English. :p (and yeah, I'm ignoring the whole 'v' = 'w' in Classical Latin, too).

v is only w if you didn't go to Catholic School. And then you have things like "Youlius Kaiser." Bleech.

I'm not blaming it on Latin. I'm blaming it on misremembering Latin cues for romance language words.

In Latin, "go with God" is more like "cum Deo vada." You might get away with "via con Deo" for "a walk with God."

(Here's a fun way to dive into a deep depression, BTW. Buy 1000 flash cards of a language you took for years in HS/undergrad. Test yourself. Remove all sharp objects from the vicinity first.)

****, I couldn't remember half the words in Latin a week after I took the **** test. Rote memorization of vocabulary never was my strong point, I just crammed for a night to remember what to spew on paper the next morning.

What I do remember from Latin is that it really helped me with grammar - I learned more grammatical concepts in 3 years of Latin than I did in 12 years of English classes. Not sure if that's a big plus for Latin or sign of the sad state of the general English curriculum.

4 years of Latin/2 years Ancient Greek = High SAT Verbal scores!

All the more reason for them to come here so you can feel bad for them, yes?

Is that usually the case though? Doesn't the term "anchor baby" derive from the fact that the baby, you know, "anchors" the mother in the US?

because in reality bleeding heart judges are loathe to kick the mother out because they'll then be denying an opportunity to the child of minority status. Remember, these people think with their hearts, not with economics, demographics, cultural movements, or the law.

Our border fence works great. Just great.
