Illegal Immigration IV: Amnesty For Some, Miniature American Flags For Others

Re: Illegal Immigration IV: Amnesty For Some, Miniature American Flags For Others

Just a note that Terry was from Flat Rock, Michigan, graduating from high school there in 1988, as I know we've got a variety of Michigan folks on this board.

The silence is deafening!

Interesting that the border patrol agent is reported to have been killed along I-19, which is a major highway south from Tucson, through Nogales, and into Mexico. So it doesn't sound like some remote ambush like the killing of rancher Robert Krentz last year. Makes you wonder if it was a traffic stop of smugglers.

I wondered that as well, but I concluded it probably wasn't. That area of I-19 near Rio Rico is where they funnel the traffic off the interstate onto an exit for what we've jokingly referred to as the "are you white" check point. Just over a year ago as we were traveling north on that highway, and went through the checkpoint, we drove no more than about a mile away before we came across a large moving van type truck stopped beside the highway. There were about 5 border patrol vehicles surrounding it, a handful of agents standing in the ditch surrounding about 10 hispanics on their knees, and another 10 or so hispanics sprinting through a cow pasture a half mile away. An ambush in this situation certainly wouldn't surprise me, but because of the large number of border patrol officers typically located at these traffic stops, I suspect it would have been a little bigger shootout.

Re: Illegal Immigration IV: Amnesty For Some, Miniature American Flags For Others

Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa, marking his first day as head of a House immigration panel, introduced a bill on Wednesday to end the practice of birthright citizenship.

The bill would amend section 301 of the Immigration and Nationality Act to clarify those classes of individuals born in the United States who are nationals and citizens of the United States at birth. So far, King's bill has three co-sponsors listed: Reps. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.), Gary Miller (R-Calif.) and Rob Woodall (R-Ga.).

It's generally thought that the 14th Amendment provides a constitutional guarantee of citizenship for anyone born in the United States -- known as "birthright citizenship" -- but King told Hotsheet last year that he does not interpret the 14th Amendment that way.

Here we go

Re: Illegal Immigration IV: Amnesty For Some, Miniature American Flags For Others

This is so stupid I had to read it twice to believe it wasn't Pete King.

Suppose my grandfather was from Scotland and my grandmother from England. My mother was born in the USA. Of which country is she a citizen? Of which country am I a citizen? I always thought I was American, but according to this clown I'm from somewhere else. I hope he tells me where...

Steve King is a redneck nutjob. Perfect for Counciltucky, Sioux City (the meth capital of the country) and the rest of Western Iowa, but a nutjob nonetheless.

"There's an awful lot of bleeding idiots out there among the voters, and they deserve some representation too."

On second thought, if this helps deport the Scots-Irish, it's a win.

We could depopulate the entire white south.

yah, who needs to clearly define who is a citizen or not. pointless trivia.

Birthright citizenship is clearly defined. He just doesn't like the answer.

Tell me with a straight face that the baby mills in places like El Paso were remotely what was intended by those who wrote the 14th amendment. It's a gross abuse of what was intended, unquestionably.

In other words, you want to redefine the qualification based on changed circumstances. That's fine. As conservatives are so fond of saying, the Constitution affords you a perfectly adequate method of doing so -- amendment. But by an originalist interpretation, the words mean what they say they mean.

I'm not sure what a petard is, but I believe one is itching at the GOP's backsides.

There's letters seal'd: and my two schoolfellows,
Whom I will trust as I will adders fang'd,
They bear the mandate; they must sweep my way
And marshal me to knavery. Let it work;
For 'tis the sport to have the enginer
Hoist with his own petar; and 't shall go hard
But I will delve one yard below their mines
And blow them at the moon: O, 'tis most sweet,
When in one line two crafts directly meet.

Or, as another sage said, "I love it when a plan comes together." :)

Not what I said. And for reasonably people, you can read the wording different ways, but I understnad that not everyone can see that.

As I said, if it retroactively strips the Bumpuses of their right to government cheese, by all means bring it on.

Of which country are you a citizen?
Edit: Sorry, I mean, if this legislation somehow passes and becomes law, of which country are you a citizen?

This doesn't seem very hard. Were your grandparents citizens of the US? If not your mother is a citizen of whatever country your grandparents were.

What if they were from different countries?
Since she wasn't born there, what claim does she have to citizenship there?

And a Mexican teenager dies along the border after throwing rocks at Border Patrol agents. Details of the story seem to be in dispute.

Now what a Mexican teenager is doing at 3:00 a.m. throwing rocks at Border Patrol agents while they are trying to apprehend drug smugglers would seem to be an interesting question.
