Illegal Immigration IV: Amnesty For Some, Miniature American Flags For Others

Re: Illegal Immigration IV: Amnesty For Some, Miniature American Flags For Others

Just another thing that makes Congress look like buffoons.

Didn't need a lot of help.

Kevin Costner
Nick Jonas
Sheryl Crow

I'm not counting Roger Clemens, who was there as a genuine expert perjurer, or Kerry Washington since I've never heard of her.

Costner, by the way, sent a letter complaining that Congressional staffers didn't treat him "with the same dignity as other expert witnesses." Every time one of these yahoos shows up, the 95% of people on the Hill who do the actual work (not the members) want to kill them.

Having a comedian testify in character is a new low, though. It would be like taking Rush or Beck seriously.

The person who invited her, Zoe Lofgren, chair of the subcommittee, is a representative from the Bay area. One would hope that such a shenanigan would cost her at the polls.

I had the same thought, and looked up her district. She's never gotten less than 65% of the vote. So, she's free to do whatever she likes really, while hanging some of her fellow Democrats out to dry. Nice of her.

Although, if the choices are between Congress inviting comedians to testify and Congess working on passing actual bills, by all means, send in the clowns.

And of course it depends a lot on the field your talking about. Here in Arizona, a lot of illegals were working in construction when things were booming here, jobs that at least in many cases could have gone to an American. On the other hand there's also a lot of seasonal agricultural work, picking fruits and vegetables, and I really doubt that those extremely hard manual labor, low paying jobs would be snapped up by Americans.

I don't disagree with you. In the northern, agricultural states where I live you see a similar situation in the packinghouses.

An argument can be made that while the local population may not pick apples, lettuce, etc..., for the low wages accepted by hispanics, or in my territory, cut up hogs or beef cattle, if you keep the immigrants out, the orchard owners and packinghouse companies will be compelled to raise wages to find people to fill their openings.

I think that argument is valid. However, it also uncovers the dirty little secret about America in that we like our apples, bacon and beef relatively cheap, just like our Nike's made in Asia or central america.

Finally, I've had a person tell me he refuses to work in a packinghouse pulling the innards out of a cow for $9/hr., and he's really angry at the Mexicans who will, because if they didn't the packinghouse would be forced to pay him $15-20 an hour to do it. There is just something about that argument that fails to generate any sympathy from me.

Hey, looks like someone doesn't understand the concept of a free market. Let me suggest Smith's "The Wealth of Nations." Good read, but there aren't really that many pictures in it, unfortunately.

Yeah, no sympathy whatsoever for a person who wants to get paid what their worth. Who does he think he is? What college did HE go to?

What college did HE go to?

Why does he have to go to college? I know lots of folks aren't worth a good _____ and they went to college.

How do you confuse a drawn out thank you by an 81 year old into embarrassment? Examiner really is toilet paper.

What? You may have posted this in the wrong thread or something. I don't think Colbert is 81.

And in other news, a Mexican town takes justice into its own hands after yet another kidnapping.

Too funny.

Never mind. Sometimes you for a second...you forget that that kind of reporting has become the norm.

What in the world are you talking about? Colbert was asked to leave, plain and simple. The Examiner was the first link I saw, however, a Google search returns 1300 similar stories.

Here's one from Gawker:

Safe districts aren't all bad. They can sometimes produce representatives who actually stand for something, rather than whatever hodgepodge of rhetoric is necessary to swing that last 1% necessary to win.

It's a double edged sword.

I don't know about that, if your stances are so noble and good, shouldn't you be able to win anyways? I just think you should have to face the voters on your record sometimes, not on the basis of the letter by your name.

You can if you want. But the sources you have provided position the story as Colbert testifying or at worst was asked to leave...only the examiner called it embarrassment. If you watch the video provided, Conyers spent two minutes in a rambling compliment calling Colbert's testamony fine and even regretted not being able to attend his upcoming rally. But the examiner said Democrats were 'embarrassed'. I missed the part where someone said...'ZOMG the guy was terrible...or I can't believe he did that'.

I know media misrepresents stuff all the time. The bigger problem is that some readers can't tell the difference between an 81 yo guy who thoroughly praised Colbert but appeared like he wanted to get down to business...vs embarrassment.
