Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Sol Yurick, author, 87

Yurick wrote the novel The Warriors, on which the movie was based. Read it, if you haven't already; it's much darker, less comic book-ish, and more introspective than the movie. (I believe you can read it for free here.)

Aaron Swartz, Internet activist, co-founder of what became Reddit, co-inventor of RSS.

Suicide at 26, facing up to a $1M fine and 35 years in prison for downloading/sharing academic journal articles from JSTOR.

Merely a coincidence, but Swartz went to the same suburban Chicago high school as "fabulist" Stephen Glass and disgraced former Penn State president Graham Spanier.

With all the outrage over this suicide and blame being cast on the government and MIT, I can't help but think, "Where were his friends and family? This is a guy who has had well-documented battle with depression and now he's facing $1 million fine and 35 years in federal pound you in the *** prison?"

And naturally, the bleeding heart reaction is that this is the prosecutor's fault. Hope she's got an armed guard and a crack IT security staff in the coming days.

He, and he alone, made the choice to take his own life, regardless of the circumstances.

Also, this.

Still kind of sore for how things went with the North Stars.

Edit: Not to be a dick about it, and I know that the Gunds didn't sell to Norm Green. No, they sold to the guys who had just been shut out of the Bay Area because the Gunds were busy gutting the North Stars (and raping the wound) to create the Sharks while getting a sweetheart deal from the NHL. These were guys who had no real interest in Minnesota and almost immediately sold all their shares to Green. They're all guilty, as far as I'm concerned. And the preferential treatment shown to the Gunds was one of the things that eventually made Lloyd Petit turn sour on the NHL and stop trying to bring it to Milwaukee. So, in my book, the Gunds are jerks for screwing with hockey in two markets where I would've cheered for a team. Side note: this is also why the San Jose Sharks can go **** themselves. I don't care how many Badgers they have on their team.

Between Gund, Green, the Pohlads, and the various Vikings owners all yanking around their MN fanbases, it's really no wonder why my pro sport fandom is nothing more than just a passing interest these days.
