One of the most emotional moments ever occurred when Freddie Steinmark walked across the stage to receive his letter jacket from Royal. Both were in tears. The young man had started in the national championship game against Arkansas. Complained of pain in his leg afterward. And within a week, his left leg was gone because of osteocarcoma. His courage in fighting the disease was inspirational.

"Dance with the one that brung you."

He was not exactly handsome to begin with-but after that fight and one with Gene Fullmer that I went to see with my dad, he looked like a creation from Night of the Living Dead. But he rarely took a step backward in the ring and just forged into the fray. Somewhere amongst my treasures I have a scribbled autograph from him (more of a scrawl) when he was training at a bath house in Brooklyn at the Steeplechase Amusement park.

Jeez. Gene Fullmer. What a rock. Absolutely the toughest guy you've ever seen. Not much on boxing skill, but you had to drive a stake through his heart to stop him. Wasn't he in that WWII movie with Bill Holden about a combined Canadian/American special forces unit? "The Devil's Brigade?" Man he was tough.

I've been waiting for anyone tomention Clutch Cargo.;) Remember the cartoons where nothing moved at all except the lips?

Modern Japanese anime does the same thing. And then the lips don't match what's being said. It's high quality programming they're feeding kids these days.

Crusader Rabbit!! What about Tom Terrific (and the Mighty Manfred) and Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse?
THOSE were cartoons!
