And, I believe, he was listed as juror #5. Simply a great actor in a great role in a great movie.

The breadth of his roles was amazing. He was also quite the hoofer and he barely survived WWII.

Durning had been a dance instructor early in his career. Indeed, he had met his first wife, Carol, when both worked at a dance studio.

He was among the first wave of U.S. soldiers to land at Normandy during the D-Day invasion and the only member of his Army unit to survive. He killed several Germans and was wounded in the leg. Later he was bayoneted by a young German soldier whom he killed with a rock. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and survived a massacre of prisoners.

In later years, he refused to discuss the military service for which he was awarded the Silver Star and three Purple Hearts.

Steve-my post was about Klugman in 12 Angry Men. One of my all time favorite movies. But you are so right about Durning. He could play anything from comedy farce, to light comedy, to melodrama to vicious villain. In so many movies you just did not notice him-until as you walked out of the theater you tried to figure out who played that character that just stole the show.

Didn't Klugman lose his voice to throat cancer years ago? I heard that he taught himself how to talk again, that is very impressive if true.

Oops, I clicked on the wrong post, but both men were outstanding actors and gentlemen. They don't make them like that anymore.

State, you're right about Klugman learning how to talk after his battle with throat cancer.

Apart from his higher profile roles "So they call me concentration camp Earhardt," I also liked him as Captain Max Pruss in "The Hindenburg," "No wonder they lose all their airships."

This scene with Pacino in "Dog Day Afternoon" was reportedly mostly improvisation.

Frank Calabrese, Sr., mob hitman from Chicago. Convicted for killing, among others, Anthony "the ant" Spilotro, the real life inspiration for Joe Pesci's character in "Casino." The Ant lived in my home town, and both he and his brother were clipped and buried in the same grave on an Indiana farm owned by a mobster.
