Hockey support in Georgia

Re: Hockey support in Georgia

We're better at everything that I care about in sports than your alma mater and your adopted school combined.
*Zing*

But you are living in Wisconsin. Enough said.

BTW, the cute Border Battle competition between the two schools was won again by Minnesota. ;D

Re: Hockey support in Georgia

You are giving them to much credit. I know you think the world revolves around Big Ten schools but it doesn't. The Gophers are a big deal because it is a Minnesota thing, but the other schools are not going to be a big draw. My guess is Michigan would be the only other Big Ten team that would be a big deal if they came because of past NCAA tourney match ups. nobody would give two s**ts if Ohio State, Michigan State and Penn State came to the Herb in the coming years.

True. Kato home attendance this year - For the Gophers, 9988 for 2 games. For NoDak, 9706 for 2, For Wisc, 7294 for 2 (The gate was bigger for Michigan Tech, among others, than it was for Wisc). We'll miss the Gophers and NoDak for revenue (and likely SCSU who was generally a good draw/rivalry), but no matter what other schools think of their own programs, they don't have any broad-based appeal. A winning program brings people out to watch.

Re: Hockey support in Georgia

...

Kennesaw was our best hope, and I do believe that Sonny Perdue killed that one, eh, 5hole?

GFM <— hopes to see Niagara come to UAH again so 5hole will be back in our building. ;)
You'll have to enlighten me on how Sonny killed hockey at KSU. I think maybe he had less involvement than, say, Obama killing NASA.

Hey, one of my favorite trips that I don't get to make anymore. And it will not be happening this season - but maybe I can talk Burkie into some Southern hospitality for the following season ... ??

I had heard that he'd said no to non-academic budget increases for that year (excepting sports where boosters defray costs). But I don't live in Georgia and only read 1-2 stories however many years ago that was. Also, I will have a long discussion with you about NASA sometime.

You should try. We'd like to have purple back in our arena. Also, Danton is gone, and I know that things were frosty with them.

Re: Hockey support in Georgia

...There's a good travel program out of Atlanta, and our Thunder AAA plays them. It's sad that Atlanta doesn't have the hockey support per capita that Huntsville has. I'm hopeful, though.

To once again get this thread back on track: I can't personally verify this but I've been told by some folks down there that a kid named Justin Bieber skated a few games for one of the Atlanta Fire teams when he temporarily moved to Atlanta circa 2008. But he apparently found other things to occupy his time and didn't stick around long. Maybe someone knowledgeable about the Fire program can confirm or deny?

I do not remember that specifically (about saying no to non-academic budget increases) but it seems that there was controversy over some proposed student fee increases. You could well be correct though I would think it just fell under a more general edict rather than specifically targeting hockey at KSU. I did a quick google search but found nothing that referenced it ... knowing you though, you are probably right.

I think there is a major issue with trying to get in a couple games in Alabama. That is, we play 27 conference games so only 7 NC games. Burkie needs to get get three or four of those at home, so only a few road games. And he tries to schedule at least one or two big name teams every year ... Michigan, MSU, Minnie, etc. We need those type games to help in our PWR. Also, he may need to return games for those teams that visit Dwyer ... usually teams like BGSU, Clarkson, SLU, etc. - so many teams close by with whom we need to develop or maintain stronger ties. Not much opportunity left to head your way.

If AHA would go to fewer in-conference games, I think there could be chance to head South.

Yeah, I get why y'all have a hard time scheduling road NC series against small schools. And as for Perdue, I think that it was something statewide. As I remember it, the KSU student body had agreed to increased fees, so it was a bit of a surprise that they'd be denied. Whether this had anything to do with the effects on Hope, I don't know. Could be.

Re: Hockey support in Georgia

Georgia hockey lore has it that there was once a semi-pro team called the Macon Whoopie. True?

Re: Hockey support in Georgia

Too small for successful D1. I think you'll still see some small rinks going d1... One school doesn't make everything change

The only way UGA goes D-I without at least five other SEC schools going D-I is if Georgia Tech does it. Neither scenario is going to happen, unless Nick Saban suddenly decides to coach a varsity ice program at ALABAMA, and God help us if that happens.

no, i agree it'd take a lot... but 2500 is not too small for D1

Re: Hockey support in Georgia

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that the NC$$ set 5,000 as a minimum seating requirement for new D1 facilities some years back, thereby effectively grandfathering existing smaller facilities. In any event, 2,500 is a waste of time, effort, and money for a school the size of UGA if it has any thoughts at all about eventually establishing a D1 program.

No. Even then that's not necessarily a reasonable starting point. I think 4000 is plenty reasonable, I mean, look at Miami

Sorry, I stepped all over you on that point. I agree that a small rink would be acceptable, and I'll even argue that it's a good idea for a Southern school. The facility would have to have multiple uses, of course, but if you design it for that, it'd be usable if/when you outgrew it. If I won Mega Millions and bought UAH a rink, I wouldn't build it bigger than 4,000. It looks like we'll keep on having the VBC for events bigger than that.
