Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Thank you for your thoughtful contribution to the discussion. It's always with great interest I read your comments as they always add something to the discussion. Keep up the good work. +1

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

We're just perplexed by a UVM fan who thinks there's any reason to believe they'll finish above NU this year with a less talented team that didn't do anything last year either. That's all.

Northeastern should be embarrassed if they finish behind Vermont.

Also they have a superior incoming class and more talent on the roster to begin with, so yes, if they finish behind UVM, that should be considered a failure.

Behind UML, BC, PC, BU, ND, fine, but not UVM.

I hope you can appreciate UVM's good fortune in facing NU at the beginning of last season. If they had played the Huskies in January or February, UVM would have had three fewer points and NU would have had a first round bye!

Finishing behind UVM this season would be more than just embarrassing. It would require, at a minimum, serious injuries to our top 2 goalies and top two forward lines. That would be tragic!:(

And since it's not taking place on a Monday in February, NU's odds of suffering a tragedy drop by at least a power of 10.

If you gave them the Ruck of the end of the season at the start, maybe they don't lose so many early.

For this year? Having a genuine starting caliber goalie from the start will make a world of difference.

The problem at the beginning of the season was the goal-tending, period. Everyone knew this could be a problem going in. I was hoping that Ruck would get the nod from the onset. I'd seen the kid over two seasons in the USHL and believed that he could step right in and start over whomever was returning. He'd get a few games under his belt, adjust to the speed and skill and, IMHO, exceed what Clay Witt had done the previous two seasons.

So you are counting on a mediocre sophomore goaltender to carry you again this season? That typically works out well for teams.

If anyone wants the lotto numbers let me know...

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

On the flip side, i don't know how anyone could be surprised by NUs predictable regression under jim madigan

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

uvm prolly get swept at pc, nd, & bc. hope to split against uconn and mc. will win both vs uhn. not bad considering.

Maybe not, but UVM still swept NU and should finish ahead of them..

who doesn't? :D

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Lets have some fun tonight before the regular season ends and we can all know how wrong we were

You are delusional if you think Maine is going to finish in the basement or if Gendron is going to be fired. He just signed an extension for a good reason.

Basement +1 =/= basement Congratulations You're A Big Winner

Picking UNH last also may be delusional, even if there is not much difference in 7 through 12. The UNH head coach may be on a mission for 600 wins and only has two remaining seasons to reach that milestone. I am not predicting that UNH will get home ice for the first round of the HEA post-season, but we should be able to avoid the dreaded cellar.

Bottom 4 is the cellar or no?

NU also returns Jim Madigan. Let's see if he was a one hit wonder.

Half his team went down with injuries, BUT he is till starting Ruck. I'd say this is still up for debate. NU should sign him to a nice long extension :D

NCAA: BU, ND, Lowell, PC

Coach Firing/retiring: York and Umile hang it up. Carvel finally realizes the hopelessness of what he signed up for and sets himself on fire like an Amherst futon. Leaman makes the jump to pro hockey.

All of this is still on the table at least

Will you promise Sneddon getting fired? We have wanted him gone for years.. Maybe St. Louis can take over and get some Quebec recruits..

Did Sneddon prove enough for you?

I predict that you are all wrong.

Definitely true

1. Boston College
2. Notre Dame
3. Boston University
4. Massachusetts - Lowell
5. Providence
6. Vermont
7. Merrimack
8. Northeastern
9. Connecticut
10. New Hampshire
11. Massachusetts
12. Maine

Actually probably will be the closest thing to a winner. Issue is you're a Notre Dame fan and I ain't giving you any awards. Sorry

Northeastern should be embarrassed if they finish behind Vermont.

Well I guess your face is probably red right now

Maine behind umass, that left a mark

Red Gendron avoids incredible embarrassment, finishes 11th

It is funny seeing everybody diss NU on this board. Mostly by bc and bu fans that are so butt hurt that NU the underdog for years won the championship. .

Well fortunately next year you guys won't come under such scrutiny.

Which northeastern team will we see? The one that got crushed early last year by the top of the conference or the one that played well in the hockey east tourney and beat up on the sisters of the poor in the second half of the season?

The one where half the team was in the hospital

UVM 5th? In what universe? Were we watching the same team last year? Maybe if they let them skate 7 or 8 at a time.. given the number of recruits that have that should be easy.

You must be super happy with 6th when you only were allowed to skate 5

To paraphrase the children's song:

Nobody likes us, everybody hates us,
We're gonna go eat worms!
Big fat juicy ones,
Eensie weensy squeensy ones,
See how they wiggle and squirm!
:p

Maybe if your training staff would stop feeding the Stevens bros worms they would have stayed upright and you could have lost in the beanpot final again?

Where BC finishes is almost irrelevant. York just needs to retire. As long as he finishes in the top 4 and announces his retirement he is a shoo in.

Could still happen

Wake us up when Vermont does anything of note. Try getting past round 1 of the playoffs even. We will happily take talking to's from BC, BU, Lowell, PC fans on here with actual sustained success but man, win a few games first.

While I agree finishing above NU is note really noteworthy, you and KDaddy didn't have such a fun time this year I guess

I appreciate all of the Feedback that's being left - anonymously of course - in my "rep"...

We still don't like you. please go away and take BUtogether with you

You have to forgive him.. he is delusional at times. Most of us (UVM fans) think we will be 9 or 10 this year.. we suck.

JCarter was right !:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Agreed. I think the coaches were actually pretty generous putting us at #8. I think 10-11 is probably about right.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

People crowing only a third of the way through the Hockey East schedule may look just as bad at the end also.

nah its mostly UVM sandbagging and NU still high off their conference title

Are we really boasting about showing up red headed stepchildren?

c'mon!!!! :)

I'll boast about whatever I dmn well please. Now at least get a point from Notre Dame tomorrow k?

Red Gendron avoids incredible embarrassment, finishes 11th

Maines #1 fanboy thinks the Maine jersey makes them good. Too bad its not true

I wouldn't bet on Maine finishing ahead of UMass next year.

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Copying this from the BC thread, perhaps this is the better place for discussion on this topic.

Final results going by position (not seeding):
York +5
Bazin +3
Sneddon +2
Dennehy +2
Gendron +1
Quinn EVEN (preseason #1)
Umile EVEN ( )
Leaman EVEN
Micheletto -1
Jackson -2
Cavanaugh -2
UMadBro? -6

If you're using this as a small guide for voting on COY, it's pretty clear that it has to be one of the three coaches that shared the RS title.

York.
Pros: Went +5, best in the league, and took a squad decimated by pro defections and amazingly tied UML and BU in the standings.
Cons: Team looks like they belong in the Super 8 rather than Hockey East as the season closes. Choked away a huge, huge lead.

Quinn.
Pros: Given that he could NOT have a positive number with a preseason #1 rank, he did finish right on the money. Meeting high expectations is always welcome and you cannot be penalized for being ranked #1 going into a season.
Cons: With a talent differential equivalent to the Harlem Globetrotters vs the Washington Generals, BU somehow finished tied with BC, a glorified HS team right now. How did this happen?

Bazin.
Pros: At +3, he had the second highest climb from the preseason expectations and also shared the RS title.
Cons: None? Somehow finished tied with BC?

Thoughts? By the time I got to Bazin I realized it's truly a reach to find a negative against him. It's a tough call. York did do an amazing job overall but seeing the team tank and not be able to defend, score, or put together a powerplay really makes it hard to make the vote here in the end of February. Quinn, you feel like perhaps even though he did win, the point differential in the standings would be higher and he would not have had to share it given such talent on the roster. UML... they are peaking at the right time, terrific team, terribly difficult to play against, Bazin may be the choice.

I'm biased, but I'd argue Sneddon could also be a contender. After last season, plus Packy transferring and the hazing fiasco, it looked like we'd be lucky not to be in...well maybe not UMass territory (I don't think anyone expected them to be as bad as they were; we knew they'd be bad but not THIS bad), but definitely Maine territory. And yet we still managed to secure home ice in the first round.

That being said, Bazin should run away with it, some pro team is gonna snatch him up real soon

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Sneddon did a nice job. Worth mentioning. But should not even be in this discussion.
If we finished top 4 he'd have a strong case, but 6th isn't good enough, and it's Bazin's to lose really.

York...I don't know how BC won a share of the regular season title. And Quinn's team winds up playing pond hockey far too often, trying to win on talent and talent alone. I'd

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

It's fun looking back to see how people missed. I was way too high on NU and realized my error in early November when watching Ruck. Sure, injuries didn't help the team at all, but goaltending has sunk this team more than we thought.

IMO Bazin/York should get COTY.

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Player of the year could be interesting too. ZAR and Kelleher are the obvious choices, but they weren't playing for the top teams. I think it's ZARs to lose, but comparing talent on their respective lines one could make a case for kelleher.

In any other year, Keller, Bjork, and Gambardella would all have a shot, but I doubt it this year.

Keller wins ROY walking away right?

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

He should, but maybe he gets knocks for his time missed with injury and at the WJC

He missed one game while at the WJC. And even with the games missed due to injury earlier in the season, he still lead the league rookies in points.
