Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

BU is not a step behind....

Are you serious? You think BC and BU are at the same level next year? Except for one year (2009), BC has pretty much owned Boston U on and off the ice. BU isn't a mile behind, but they are behind.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

Why? Because they won last year?

You're aware of what BC has been doing for the last decade plus while BU has sat in dormancy with the exception of 1 year, right?

To be honest, no one is on the level of BC right now. I think nationally it is mostly recognized as fact. That is all subject to change, not a lot from 1 year to the next but the fluctuations do gradually happen. Army isn't a football power anymore. Lake Superior State and Maine aren't hockey powers anymore.

BU has a better tradition, better facilities and they don't play second fiddle to Football and on occasion basketball. BU hockey runs athletics, that can't be said about BC hockey on Comm ave.

And this matters so much!

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

How is Maine no longer a hockey power? they had three bad seasons, thats not enough to ruin a program, they have the best player in the country and may be returning to the Frozen Four very soon.

Very much so. Ask the Michigan coach how much it annoys them that they are a football school. Ask the BC players.

Coaches do care about that big time

BU and BC are the two top programs in the east, if both jobs came up for grabs, you would have equal lines of equally talented coaches.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

BU had a significant edge in tradition after their 1995 national title. A 4-1 lead in titles. Since then? BC has closed the gap to 5-4. Obviously BU is still a better program historically, but if you're ranking programs right now, BU is NOT on the same level as BC.

There was a rather dismaying piece in today's Boston Globe that feted the likes of BC's autocratic Gene DeFilippo and 'his' basketball/football coaches and their big salaries. I say 'dismaying' because nowhere was Jerry York mention. All he's done is deliver three national championships in a decade. Sure, the scope & breadth of college hockey isn't what it is in NCAA football and basketball, but York has combined stellar performance with a program to have real pride in.

I feel that BC's basketball and football programs have regressed while hockey has progressed. DeFilippo seems not to care a bit about his hockey team, which is why I think he's a jerk  .

I saw Bob Hohler and laughed out loud. Didn't read the piece.

Hasn't seemed to have any impact on York or the players on the ice.

Well Dad IF Nyquist is not the best player in the country (for arguments sake top 3) can you name the players that are better in college hockey? We all await your wisdom and knowledge with baited breath?:D

Cam Atkinson. Performance on the big stage speaks for itself.

Maine isn't a hockey power. They are probably an average to above average program right now. BC, Dakota, and Miami are hockey powers, not Maine.

BobF, clearly OMFG Warsofsky!!! is the best player in the country. He did buy him a USA jersey and all...

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

Atkinson for one will have a better season....

Nyquist of course will be an early Hobey favorite, great player. Just expect Atkinson to break out and have a huge year after leading BC in scoring and country in goals last year.

I don't necessarily disagree with this. Trying not to be biased in this seeing Nyquist got more attention than Cam last season, but it's hard to look past jumping from 7 goals as a freshman to 30 as a sophomore.

They're different types of players, that's for sure.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

BU and BC are the two top programs in the east,

What is this based on exactly? Sure BC is the top program in the country, so you're right on that one. BU has one title and has been to one Frozen Four since 1997. UNH has been to four of them in that same time and Maine has been to been to six Frozen Fours and has a title in 1999.

Maine has been down in recent years and UNH is UNH, but after BC there's a big gap to the number two program in the east. You could also throw Cornell in there as well.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

atkinson is going to breakout this year after leading the nation in goals last year? wow.

Miami's no more of a hockey power right now than UNH. Great regular season team that has been average to poor in the NCAA tournament outside of their run in '09 when they ironically had a mediocre regular season and made the tournament on a mathematical change. Basically, they're not a "power".

True, but they've been to back to back Frozen Fours which puts them ahead of most programs recently. They are in danger of becoming another "UNH" if they can't win one soon.
