Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

I wouldn't be surprised if you got four or five of the six correct.

It's easy to say that now, but just look at this year. How many people had Butler, Gibbons, Cohen, Braun or Foster on the First Team before the season? Not many. Most people had Bonino, Marcou, Shattenkirk, Edwards and Millan on there.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

As far as next season. Saponari will have to red shirt for a year! I agree he would add great speed, but that great speed in the NCAA will have to be put on hold for a season
Yup, know he'll have to red-shirt in the event that he transfers anywhere (anywhere other than Merrimack because it has been so written ;) ).
Federal League, good point, he does (did?) win the battles along the boards for the Terriers.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

OK, then. I can respect that, because at least if you're going to be an *** hole about something, you'll stand up in front of a crowd and do it. I mean that seriously, too. But when someone was habitually doing that, and it seemed like most everyone else was just ignoring our back and forths (and who could blame them?) you seemed like a good candidate. How about this? In the future....if you want to call me out over every post I make, lets just do it over PM so we don't drive everyone else crazy.

And just for the record....

-watching you banter with others....I had yet to see you let anything just die, so pardon my confusion!

-No, shes not my sister, who would do that? She's my aunt. I'm all about the older girls.

-A couple more drunken run-ins with public transportation vehicles, and this is all a moot point!

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

i maintain that Jon says more with less than anyone;)

I have lots of practice.

In fact, I think Julien, Keano Davis, Bellichik, Francona, and Doc Rivers and ecstatic that I spend so much time being frustrated with the the state of PC hockey, that I have little time to aggravated with them. Especially since the winter sports teams are edging towards extinction.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

Nahh,

Darling put his team behind the PWR 8-ball by missing the OOC games at the start of the season. Then when his team made a bit of a run towards the end, he tanked again, and got re-suspended in time to miss the playoffs.

That's a special kind of dedication.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

So everyone seems to agree that BC and Maine are the top two teams. But is Maine that good or did they all have career seasons last year? If this is a true step back to near the top then congrats to the much maligned TIMMAY.

But why not UNH? Sure, they lost Butler and Foster but somehow a senior forward or two always emerge to help them be at the top of the league standings.

And BU may be hungry after taking the last year off. Although I remain convinced that they are the most consistent underperforming group of talent on a regular basis in the league year in and year our. The only reason they won the NC in 2009 was because of Gilroy and Wilson stepping up and overcoming the coaching dysfunction.

I think Mack is going to struggle some now that everyone is going to be ready to play them. Although, playing in that high school rink certainly gives them a distinct advantage. Will De Costa have any sort of sophomore slump. And how can you be a real team and hang a forward at the red line the entire game. That is just ridiculous.

NU is a bit of a wildcard - could pull together a strong and consistent effort or fade back to near the bottom again. Recruiting seems to be improving but Cronin going to explode if it does not all come together?

UVM is a bit like NU in being a wildcard. They lost a lot of forwards to graduation and are extremely young up front - but they also have a big and experienced D corps that underperformed expectations much of last year. If they get the PP figured out - and they have a defensemen recruit who is a PP specialist - and the freshmen forwards step up then it should be back to battling for a home ice spot. They also have a strong goalie recruit that will push for net time.

UML, Umass and PC will all need to establish identities and surprise to do much damage.

I'm hoping this post gets us back into some real dialogue about the upcoming season. I like summer but it's the dog days already on this board...

I'll bite. For that UNH forward stepping up, my money is on Sislo. He's very talented and I could see him exploding, they still have a ton of talent, they should get home ice. bc never plays well early because their talent takes time to gell, but it looks like with the very few leaving, perhaps they start strong and stay strong. eep. nu and uvm are wild cards but for completely opposite reasons, nu has good young+experienced forwards who are expected to pick it up next year while they have next to zero on the blueline. uvm has young inexperienced forwards but a solid defensive corp that can shut teams down. both teams have respectable goalies (madore gets the edge here). I'm very interested to see which team comes out on top between uvm and nu.

the mack shouldnt step back much, unlike the high expectations that came with uml last year, the mack played at about the same level all season while lowell just had a good second half. it'll be interesting to see how the mack handles home ice expectations, which is what I think that they should have and should try and reach for.

bu will be interesting, on paper i dont see them doing anything special, but it just seems like they will be in the top 4. i mean they have a decent core but they lost a lot, i expect their recruiting class is as good as always (insight from a bu fan would be nice).

umass and uml have been gutted with departures/seniors and pc doesnt have much going for them besides one alex beaudry. these 3 will fight for that last playoff spot.

maine has the potential to be one of the best two teams, however their "floor" so to speak is much lower than all of the previously mentioned teams besides bc due to their offensive talent. I feel that they do feed off of nyquist a fair bit in that he is expected to carry them in most games, which should be a little worrisome to maine fans as anytime you rely on one dude to carry you it's sink (marcou, umass) or swim (maine last year). though if i were to pick one guy to carry my team in he id pick nyquist. their goalie situation is interesting with darling, their d is meh, but with their forwards I wouldn't be too worried.

should be interesting, can't wait.

The only way bu finishes in the top 4 next year is if 3 teams leave Hockey East to join the BTHC and 3 more have their entire team suspended for getting paid to appear in an NCAA Hockey video game.

BU's freshman class is supposed to be very good. On paper, it's probably the second best class they've had in the last 5-10 years after only the 07-08 group of Wilson, Bonino, Shattenkirk, Cohen and Pereira. Coyle, Nieto and Clendening are all expected to make an impact from the get-go.

The only way bu finishes in the top 4 next year is if 3 teams leave Hockey East to join the BTHC and 3 more have their entire team suspended for getting paid to appear in an NCAA Hockey video game.

Would you honestly be surprised if BU beat out Merrimack, UVM and NU for the last home ice spot? I wouldn't. None of those teams are world-beaters by any means.

ETA: Because I like rankings, here's a very preliminary ranking.
1) BC
2) Maine
3) UNH
4) Merrimack
5) BU
6) UVM
7) NU
8) UML
9) PC
10) UMass

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

I would like to preface these rankings by saying that the only team that I am truely familiar with is Maine. The rest of the info I use is what I saw personally in a few games, or what I see on these boards. Feel free to tell me how stupid I am.

1) BC-- Great coach, offense, depth, and really good young defense, Dumoulin is a stud. The only possible question i can think of is the leadership they lost in Lombardi, Price, etc. HE is theirs to lose. Best case: 1st, Worst case: 2nd.

2) Maine-- Didn't lose too much talent. Goaltending is obviously the biggest question up in Orono. But with 4 guys competeting for the spot hopefully someone will pan out. On defense I expect Dimmen and O'neill to be solid. I think Nemec is improving and hopefully younger guys like Pryor and/or O'connor will step up. Defensive turnovers bringing it out of the zone killed us last year so that needs to improve. Offensively, Nyquist will be Nyquist, and that line is deadly. Dee looked to be on the verge of a breakout last year and as long as injuries don't continue to plague him I think that should happen. Lots of young sparkplugs in Diamond, Shemansky, Mangene but they tended to disappear for stretches last year. Best case: 2nd place, Worst case:5th

3) UNH -- Goalie is a question mark along with replacing Butler's production. I expect my most hated Wildcat (Desimone) to be the one to fill in a lot of that void. Kessel is a great D-man and should be huge for them. As long as someone turns out to be a decent goalie, they should have home ice again.
Best case: 2nd, Worst case: 5th

4) BU-- Lost a lot of talent but also have a ton coming in. i can't see JP letting them slide too far down. Everyone will be on a short leash due to recent events and (captains especially) will be that much more dedicated and motivated.
Best case: 3rd, Worst case: 6th.

5) UVM-- Good, big D-men and Madore is a very good goalie when he's on his game. I think Stacey will break out this year and little Stalberg will be right behind him. They have a great shot at home ice if the young forwards like Brickley and White step up. Best case: 3rd, Worst case: 6th

6) Merrimack-- They also have a good shot at home ice if Da Costa's supporting cast improves. I think Cannata is a much better goalie than he is often given credit for. If they decide to play well away from home, they can be very scary. Best case: 4th, Worst case: 7th.

7) NU-- Would not be surprised if they finished as high as 5th. I really like Rawlings in net and Cronin on the bench. Quailer should establish himself as a legitimate top forward in HE. Not too familiar with the rest of the forwards or defense but it looks like a nice big class coming in so if one or two is a gem they could have a very nice season. Best case: 5th, Worst case: 8th.

8)UMass-- Lost huge amounts of talent. I give them the edge over Lowell and PC because of Dainton and the massive incoming class. Periera (sp?) should be an immediate contributor and I think will be a strong contender for ROY. Best case: 7th, Worst case:10th.

----------------------------------------------------------

9) PC-- Beaudry and....? I like Bergland and MacKinnon and I hope they can have a good year and sneak PC back into the playoffs, where they belong. Everyone knows about Beaudry and how he can steal some games.
Best case:8th, Worst case: 10th.

10) Lowell-- Lost next to everyone. Enormous and skilled freshman class should help out but will probably be inconsistent. Biggest question to me is goaltending. Hamilton and especially Hutton are huge shoes to fill.
Best case: 8th, Worst case: 10th.

You know, its amazing how little we Lowell fans have talked on the boards about goaltending for next season. Its probably one of those things that we'll find out when the games start and no sooner.

Nope, i wouldn't even be surprised if they were second. the only time i AM surprised is the rare times they aren't near the top, just my opinion for what ever little it's worth
