Hobart and William Smith starting hockey?

To clarify the latter mentioned 4 school's games against each other count towards the National Collegiate championship selection but not towards the D-III selection.

Correct. But since I was referring to D-III throughout the post and all those teams play entirely D-II/D-III schedules except for maybe a rare game or series against Sacred heart, who might as well be DII or D-III I thought they would get the drift ;)

Re: Hobart and William Smith starting hockey?

This is a bit too simplistic for accuracy sake.

Essentially, they are one institution, though with certain separations. From their website:

"All students share the same campus, faculty, administration and curriculum. Each college maintains its own traditions, deans, student government and athletic department. Men graduate from Hobart College. Women graduate from William Smith College."

They have one college president overall. Even the graduation ceremony is done as one. In my mind, the only difference is the name of the school on the diploma.

And to another poster, it is NEVER referred to as Smith College. It is always William Smith College. And when you say that in Upstate NY, people know you are referring to the school in Geneva, and not the one in New England. (There is also a Paul Smith's College in Lake Placid.)

The whole thing is just so dopey....Hobart, while not exactly Harvard, is at least semi-well known ["Willie Smith College"...not so much]....why the "William Smith" lingo survives today so many years after the world went co-ed is beyond me...Give it a rest and just call it Hobart....is there any reason why you can't 'consummate' this relationship after all these years? Honestly...literally and figuratively, time to give it up.

Re: Hobart and William Smith starting hockey?

Does anyone have any information on this program? Have not seen anything since the announcement.

Re: Hobart and William Smith starting hockey?

As listed in the coaching changes thread, William Smith announced the hiring of Jamie Totten as the first coach in Varsity Heron women's hockey history.

Seems like an impressive get on paper for a starting up program. Congrats to Jamie and HWS.

I do think that she will be a good coach for William Smith with so much experience. I'm hearing that the former UConn coaching staff is generally struggling to find other opportunities after such a bad finish at UConn the last few years, including at the prep school/junior level. Too bad because they certainly can provide valuable insights to younger players.

I don't know Jamie however I wish her well in her new position. Just wondering why she has not moved on/up prior to now. Seems odd being assistant for 12 years, especially with Linstad.

She was in the running for some past D1 positions. There have been other examples of coaches to be long time assistants before moving up. Good luck to her in her new endeavor.
