History - questioning the winners and how we arrived at this point

I kind of agree with Kepler, America would probably just Balkanize, Canada too. You’d have New England, a greater New York, a greater Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia, Ontario, Quebec etc. The Eastern shores of the Mississippi would be a war zone.

Wonderful quote from Talleyrand:

“He who has not lived in the eighteenth century before the Revolution does not know the sweetness of life and cannot imagine that there can be happiness in life. This is the century that has shaped all the conquering arms against this elusive adversary called boredom. Love, Poetry, Music, Theatre, Painting, Architecture, Court, Salons, Parks and Gardens, Gastronomy, Letters, Arts, Science, all contributed to the satisfaction of physical appetites, intellectual and even moral refinement of all pleasures, all the elegance and all the pleasures. The existence was so well filled that if the seventeenth century was the Great Age of glories, the eighteenth was that of indigestion.”

This is assuming an "American" identity even developed, or that independence would ever be sought. It is entirely possible that instead the culture of a New England -- a broader, wider idyllic English identity in the tradition of Wordsworth and Keats (Whitman would fit right in) may have taken root. Rather than defining ourselves as anti-European we might instead have become uber-European, carrying the seeds of ancient Greece into the Western sunset. You can imagine all sorts of ways that would appeal to both cultural and mercantile narratives. America as England's "city of the broad shoulders," writ large.

You should read ‘American Nations’ by (Maine author) Colin Woodard. One of the better books on history I’ve read and very accessible.

You want the US to invade the Netherlands?

I mean...

I love how everyone is "I'm shocked, shocked" that the French did summary executions of German soldiers after being liberated.

Every abused population has responded that way to their abusers, the instant they had the chance, in all of world history.

The only time it didn't happen that I am aware of was black slaves didn't massacre Southern whites after the American Civil War, which was a huge missed opportunity.

Per the FL Department of Education, that's because they were grateful to their former masters for lifting their ancestors up out of nomadic, unskilled tribal life in West Africa. ;-)

I had the same reaction as you. I just can't get upset about it.

Russian soldiers should take care not to be left behind when Ivan runs from Ukraine.

And I'm sure a lot of those Germans were just Private Derp in Baghdad with the US Army, but those are the guys who get it in the neck when they're behind lines facing the mothers of the children who were murdered by the "liberation." The tragedy is Cheney and Wolfowitz aren't there with them.

Don't smash and grab other people's country.

I'm watching a great channel on the Tube of U's about WWII, called World War Two. Good name. It's put together by the Time Ghost Army.

Thanks to new EU rules, Google has over reacted to restrict a TON of their new videos. So I encourage you to check the channel out- they do "live" coverage of the war, and we are almost exactly one year from the end of the war next Sept.

They need support to get through the last year of the war. https://www.youtube.com/@WorldWarTwo
