Re: He's dead, Jim.

Apparently it wasn't a stroke. Per CBC's Twitter account:

Test shows #GordieHowe didn't suffer a new stroke, says son Murray Howe. It was likely dehydration with fatigue. May be discharged tomorrow.

Jean Beliveau, 83 :(

Classiest athlete ever, in any sport.

Absolutely. Another sad day for hockey. :(

To the rest of the world, he was known as Jean Beliveau. To me, he was always Mr. Beliveau. The legend who, for decades after he retired in 1971, still had his number listed in the Montreal area public phone directory.

A few years ago, when his answering machine came on while I was attempting to reach him, I simply hung up. Eight hours later, the long-distance ring sounded at my Toronto home.

“Hello, this is Jean Beliveau,” the voice on the other end said. “I saw someone from this number attempted to contact me. How can I help you?”

If that’s not the definition of a gentleman, what is?

Re: He's dead, Jim.

Watched "Le Gros Bill" and his Habs in the old Chicago Stadium many times. There will never be another.

Re: He's dead, Jim.

Funny, my father says the same thing. He also says that his second favorite is Trottier, and was a big fan of Peter Stastny.

Related: one of my all-time favorite goalies is Ron Hextall, despite the fact I hate that franchise almost as much as I hate WI.

This is kind of how I feel about the Flyers too, though I take it to the level of "would rather '87 Flyers won the Cup than '87 Oilers".

Hexy was a thug, but if he had been a Wings goalie, I tend to think that the odds are pretty good Detroit would've ended the Cup drought several years before they did (obvious bias). In his prime, he was light years better than *ing Cheveldae, Stefan, or Hanlon.

O.M.G. Bud Collier? Polly Bergen? Geritol? Don't recall that specific episode, but I watched that show. **** I'm old.

Was that a hairdresser that got two votes?
Kitty Carlisle, Peggy Cass, Tom Poston and a host of other big name guest panelists. Yes, we are getting old ain't we? :)
