Despite the rush to condemnation by the media and by people on this board, his contributions will always outweigh his non-existant crimes.

As for how many people he helped in life, well, these days, it's pretty easy to offset that.

Lastly- for a person to die from cancer less than 2 months from being diagnosed- he was very sick before that. Very. My grandmother lasted a year from when she was diagnosed with stomach cancer- which is very tough to eat from. Same age. In my very non medical opinion, he was sick the entire season.

Joe Paterno was the most significant person to ever set foot on that campus. Donated millions of his own money. And helped convince others to donate untold hundreds of millions. Transforming that campus completely. He didn't do the things you mention personally, but he helped make it possible for others to do so.

this. I do not feel that I, or anyone else for that matter, will ever know exactly what happened. I figure God is supposed to be the Judge. Not me, as a human with faults. There were many things JoPa seemed to influence, things he expected from other people. Regardless of whether they all met those expectations there are sure some that would not have tried if it was not expected of them.

For me, the man's legend was irreparably tarnished when he allowed this to go on without investigation. I'll never forget him as the first football figure I admired. I'll never forget when that came crashing down.

As was mentioned earlier, this is a modern day Greek tragedy. I can't help but pity the man because I've lost nearly all the respect I had for him.

I may be mistaken but from what I saw Paterno alerted the AD who then alerted the university, the police and the child services. All of them failed to find enough evidence but the bad guy was still banned from alot of his activities altho not fired. Paterno could have fired him. I have trouble blaming JoPa for everything without giving a share of blame to the people who dropped the ball when he reported. Those folks failed in what should have been their arena.

still I do feel for his family and friends. a great coach no doubt and no doubt God is his judge.

This. He could have done more, but he did do at least the minimum. At least.

He let it go when he didn't scream it from the mountaintop. I'd quit my job before I allowed myself to be associated with a school/company/whatever that didn't do something about it. Especially when you are as big of a name as Paterno.

How can you say he was banned from activities when he was involved with the University weeks (or even days) before the announcement? This was reported numerous times during the height of the controversy.

He was banned from some activities. Not all. I didn't say I would do things the way he did. I just said that he did do something. I would hope that most people would shout from the mountain tops but the guy isn't the first person to say something and stop at the first telling. Denial isn't a pretty thing but it exists. This kind of stuff makes even the most self assured person cringe. He was a huge man in the world of football but obviously not a huge man in dealing with this.
