Lowell is about as cool as any other old mill town, Lewiston Maine and Manchester NH come to mind as other places I classify with Lowell. It's a home town hero's paradise full of white trash and general dirtbaggery. If you think that's great I feel bad for you.

Well, I live in Maine and last summer my kids participated in the summer track state meet which was held a whopping 5 or 6 miles from good ol' Orono in Brewer. My kids and wife were afraid to get out of the car when we tried to go out to dinner as we were treated to the site of drunks throwing up on the sidewalk, fights in the parking lot of a gas station, and a general level of white trash antics that is hard to surpass. So if your comparing that general area of "pristine Maine" to Lowell, I'll take Lowell.

Having never set foot in Orono, I can't speak to it's general level of "loveliness", but if it's better than Brewer you'd better build a wall around it and fast as the "dirtbaggery" you mention is right on your doorstep.

And I have to say, to be fair, they're really getting scre*ed with that off day in between (if there's a Game 3). I realize there was a boxing card scheduled (or something like that) but still, pretty tough to travel down and/or spend an extra night in a hotel just to wait another day. And of course there's SO MUCH to do there! Well, I guess they can go to the textile museum or something...

Yes, the Maine fans can discover the special exhibit on display this weekend in their honor on the history of flannel.

I called Brewer Sewer when I was up in Orono. That's where you live if your too poor for Bangor. Not helping Lowells case. Btw you should check Orono out its beautiful, undeveloped it doesn't even have a McDonald's...the polar opposite of Lowell or Brewer or any other Massachusetts scum havens

This is great hockey talk! Seriously people, culture and diversity is a good thing, don’t be ignorant and rude. Where you want to live, how you want to live, to each his own. Now about the game tonight..... Lowell needs to come out skating with urgency like they did in the third last night. It is the wrong time of the year to conserve energy while sitting back playing it safe. Attack and finish!

I'm willing to get back to hockey and admit literally everything I said can be reapplied back to Maine in general. Only thing I disagree with you on is that it would be a bag of bath salts and a handle of Allen's coffee brandy they would come knockin with..ha

Your right then Scott what I said applies to much of Maine. But since I'd call Lewiston the pinnacle example of that in Maine, and Lowell is just Lewiston tripled I'd say Lowell is 3 times the example any single place in Maine is.

So how many different people can you manage to **** off today? I'm guessing "your" a pinnacle example of a UMO graduate. I grew up in Lewiston and graduated from PC. Many of my relatives worked, and in some cases died, in the mills. I am proud of my town, my state, and of my Friars. Lewiston, like Biddeford, Lowell, Manchester, Worcester, or any number of small/medium-sized mill towns scattered throughout New England has gone through many economic and social upheavals, and has adapted and survived. It has also maintained a proud hockey tradition.

In my opinion, Lowell is a wonderful, resurgent city. I have been there several times to see the Friars vs. River Hawks (which is turning into a great rivalry), and have always been treated well. I've stayed on the UML campus, and think that the Tsongas Arena is a beautiful facility. I've also been to the Alfond Arena a few times; it is not even close to the Tsongas in comparison, and certainly not befitting of what is supposed to be, or was, a premier Division I hockey program. As for my impression of Maine fans, they appear to be a decent and knowledgeable lot, with at least one exception.

My friend goes to uml and still roots for Maine because its where he grew up... To each their own, but I think the riverhawks will be coming out of the gate with the intensity they had in the third last night, the game tonight should have a much better attendance than last night but still low due to spring break and the dorms being empty. To all of you complaining about rude fans just hope the series goes to three games because Sunday is st pattys day and that will be 10x what you experienced last night.

I grew up in New Gloucester Maine went to GNG then went to st doms in Lewiston/Auburn played lax goalie for 4 years, then I went to Orono lived in Alpha Gamma Rho for a year moved to Old Town across from the mill on Rt. 2 for a year then French Island for 2 years until I graduated got a job moved to Old Orchard and then got a house in Portland making a mortgage payment at age 24. You need more of me in this state I'm born and raised and I have the right to call a spade a spade whenever I want.

In my opinion, Lowell is a wonderful, resurgent city. I have been there several times to see the Friars vs. River Hawks (which is turning into a great rivalry), and have always been treated well. Right on. My wife is one of hundreds of artists who have studios in Lowell. There are 225 under the same roof at Western Ave studios alone. Tsongas speaks for itself. Folk Festival is a blast and there are great concerts at boardinghouse park all summer long. Lelacheur Park is a gem and it costs $6 to get in. The riverwalk and heritage park are beautiful. River itself has been cleaned up, public beach is open all summer. I run my boat on the Merrimack 75 times a year and regularly catch smallmouth bass that any backwoods big lake Mainer would envy. Fishing with me are hawks, osprey and bald eagles. Seriously, bald freakin eagles. I've played competitive APA League 9-ball every Thursday night in Lowell for 10 years at over 30 different bars and halls and never once got into a scrape with anyone or been the victim of a crime, never even had my car broken into. Wish I could say that about my time living in Boston, New York and Baltimore. I find Lowell natives to be loyal, tough but fair, good hearted characters who are generally accepting of newcomers regardless of race or where they come from. I'm not from Lowell, I live nearby but not in Lowell and I don't have to hang out there but I do because it's just a flat out cool place.
