HE Quarterfinals - #8 Maine @ #1 Lowell

Re: HE Quarterfinals - #8 Maine @ #1 Lowell

You have to remember who the Maine coach is :). He didn't bench Joey after the first major and its possible it cost Maine the game. I don't see how they had any legs left in OT.

Anyway enjoy the Garden Lowell earned their way there
Just read all the articles. Why the ferk would he defend Joey? The most politic thing to say was you aren't going to discuss it and he had a tough night. You live by the sword and die by the sword and he got us here? If I were a Maine player I would be pi55ed. If there is no i in team then the coach shouldn't put one there.

Re: HE Quarterfinals - #8 Maine @ #1 Lowell

nice call...

arnold gets the game winner....

mercifully, this season is over

and, of course, to prolong the agony, they are reviewing it...

I m looking and I do not see any talk about a hand pass on the final goal.

I saw it the instant it happened, but apparently Bunyon didn't see it and the replay was inconclusive.
28 hand passed the puck to Arnold... unless 28 got his stick on the puck just as the Maien player was sliding into him...which I cannot see from the replay

Re: HE Quarterfinals - #8 Maine @ #1 Lowell

Thanks Les, at least one Lowell(and I know their are a few more on here) fan knows how to win. It seems most of the Lowell faithful are a pretty insecure bunch who didn't expect the 1 seed to beat an 8 seed. I don't remember MC fans being like that few years ago when they spanked Maine. The facts are pretty straight forward, Lowell is good, Maine isn't
You guys have had our number for so long, it was hard to feel confident, even with the disparate records and talents this year. Sorry if my respect for your program's success against us comes off as 'insecure' but not going to lie, I would have rather played someone else.

Re: HE Quarterfinals - #8 Maine @ #1 Lowell

And the Nostradumbass award goes to...
The swavely brothers are goin to light the lamp tonight, so is diamond, and ill write you all a blog tomorrow about how the 1 seed is a group of choke artists
You would be insane to dismiss Maine. Lowell is hardly a "been there, done that" playoff team. Maine is going to be very difficult and I think that's why they ultimately take this series.
Obviously, two of the greatest predictions ever. I'm looking forward to reading Brian's blog today ... and Onion Man ... always correct his predictions about Lowell.

Well, We have a pretty good goaltender coming back next year. I really loved his performance. Freshmen class was pretty solid too. Hopefully things will be better next year.

But I hope Lowell wins it all. I've always liked your program and im glad to see you have so much success. I'll probably head to the garden to watch you win the HE title, because why not? Good luck!
First, thanks for the kind words. Second, holy cow, was Ouellete spectacular last night. He made some absolutely great saves. Unfortunately, he's only got one year left, but he's going to be a good one next year for you. And Devin Shore scares me. As an opposing fan, that's a compliment. Every time he was on the ice, I felt he was going to do something bad (good for Maine).
I'm still dumbfounded by the whole Diamond spectacle tonight. I mean you always sort of expect his thuggery, chirping, dirty play, etc. but even for him, it was just a complete implosion and totally selfish. I sort of felt a little bad for his teammates and the Maine fans who have had to tolerate this on a nightly basis for four years. And how he was ever a captain is beyond me. Wonder how his ride home on the bus is going?
I feel bad for the Maine fans that have called his actions correctly. But there are some that defend him no matter what. Those people are pathetic.

Anyway, great to get that whole 1-14 against Maine in the playoffs out of the way ... better team won.

I was amazed last night too when I read the recap and Whitehead was actually sympathizing and defending the little dirtbag. He was incredibly selfish and it was all about him, not his team and I hope they stuffed him in the underneath luggage area of their bus on the ride home last night. Or made him find his own ride home.

Ice is Life recap is up and this is their take on Diamond last night -

http://theiceislife.wordpress.com/2013/03/15/friday-thoughts-like-tears-in-the-rain/#more-2050

"Things settled down once again (apart from an unnecessary Diamond roughing major just nine seconds after the goal), until Maine’s senior captain did the only thing you’d ever expect him to do: Make a needless, almost inexplicably dirty play 190 feet from the puck, give Lowell another five-minute power play, get tossed from the last game of his college career, and throw a temper tantrum on the way to the showers for good measure. The penalty itself was so remarkably unnecessary that it’s both shocking and entirely unshocking that it happened to Diamond; he got tangled up with Joe Houk in the right corner of Maine’s end and both were down on the ice while play went the other way. With ‘Hawks and Bears alike whacking away at the puck around Hellebuyck’s crease, Diamond got to his feet but grew frustrated with his inability to free himself from Houk, so he did the only logical thing any borderline criminal degenerate would do: He stomped on the Lowell defenseman’s leg. This all happened in full view of two officials, who immediately advised Diamond his night and his career had come to an end. The captain — again, we stress this dangerous maniac who undoubtedly cost his team results with his dumb penalties numerous times in his freshman, sophomore and junior years was actually named a captain — then began gesticulating wildly, and slammed his stick against the boards like a spoiled 7-year-old, which tends to support our theory that this was roughly the age at which he stopped developing mentally. His line in the record book in the final game of his career looks like this: No shots on goal, and four penalties for 22 minutes. What a player. Good riddance."

Apparently the rule book defines a hand pass as directing the puck so even if no one got a stick on it, it counted. (I know I should go find the rules and post a link but I am too lazy) If you read the articles available one paper is saying the puck was tapped over and the rest say they couldn't tell.

It was called a goal on the ice, so the video must not have been conclusive regarding whether or not he got the stick on it.

Edit: Oh, and 28, who you're so sure did the handpassing, was watching the play from the bench. Pay attention next time.

If by "little dirtbag" you actually mean Whitehead, then yes.

I read Whitehead's comments more as a defense of himself -- yikes, this might reflect badly on me -- than as a defense of Diamond. Typical CYA stuff from Whitehead. I'd say I was amazed right there with you, but it stopped being surprising years ago.

Here is the copy/paste from http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/IH14.pdf

Rule 84 - Hand Pass
84.1 Hand Pass - A player shall be permitted to stop or “bat” a puck in the air
with the open hand, or push it along the ice with the hand, and a teammate
may take control of the puck, unless each of the items below have occurred:
1. The puck was deliberately directed to a teammate;
2. This action allowed the offending team to gain an advantage; and
3. A teammate gains possession and control of the puck, either directly or
when deflected off of any player or official.

Re: HE Quarterfinals - #8 Maine @ #1 Lowell

I'm still trying to comprehend what happened last night.

Never in all my years of watching hockey have I've seen such nonsense from a captain of any hockey team. On the first major, we can debate that all day long where it was a minor or a major. In college, the major will be issued more often than not if the position is the goaltender and he was in the crease. Agree with the fact that reputation didn't help matters either. At the same time, I don't think for one moment that anyone would believe Diamond's stomp on Houk last night wasn't egregious. In some ways, he's lucky he is a senior with no more games because there could have been some supplemental discipline that may have carried over until next season.

Arguably, the two biggest plays in the entire series were the two Joey Diamond third period penalties. While discussed already, I echoed the same sentiments last night; how on Earth's name was this kid wearing the "C" on his sweater. I realize that he is the best talent on the team but he may be the single reason that a Game 3 wasn't scheduled for Sunday. Maine could have not played a better series, because they did was they had to in order to have a chance to win any of the games; bottle up Lowell. They even got Ouellete to stop everything but the kitchen sink, especially in Game 2 to force the game into OT. If him and Shore stick around, those are two players to build this team around but a regime change is going to be needed if they want to climb out of the basement.

Lowell went 0-for-5 on the PP, including those two majors, something else I haven't really send at a live hockey game. While the River Hawks won this battle for the season, for some reason they really have difficulties against this team. There was still a lot of disruption that Maine was able to place on this team. The River Hawks do have some things to rectify for next week and whatever else may come down the road. The OT review was painful last night...if they were looking for the hand pass from Fallon to Arnold, I would think the overhead would have provided a good look. You can't really tell from the angle on the league web site and will have to wait if the broadcast become available on Comcast On Demand.

We are on our way to the Garden. Unlike 2009, this time around there will be expectations to reach and in some ways, win the championship.

Now the fun begins!

In Norm I trust.
Glad to have made it to Boston w/o needing a Sunday game.
Let's go Riverhawks.

I'd have more respect(well, maybe) for him(Whitehead) if he'd thrown Joey to the dogs in that interview. His whole pre-game spiel was about staying out of the box and keeping your emotions in check, and his team captain goes right out there and ignores what his coach is stressing entirely, instead makig the game all about him and his selfish play. Whitehead should have l;it into him. Who knows, if he'd done that three years ago, maybe last nights events never come to fruition.

Oddly enough, I felt rather saddened after the game last night, the loss and the end of the season, despite my season-long wish for Whitehead to fail. Yeah, i'm messed up.
