Harvard Men's Hockey 2021-2022

UNBEEEEELIEVABLE!!!!! Outshot 48-16 and outplayed for most of the game and yet, we somehow pull it out. Incredible. I kept expecting the roof to fall in on us in the third, but we managed to escape and then Coronato did his thing and ... WE'RE ECAC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS!!!! And we're going to the NCAAs. Hoping we get to play in Worcester but I'm not optimistic.

To beat the first and second place teams in the conference in the semis and finals is something else. Especially for a team this young.

Congrats. Better to see you guys in it than Ohio State after they lost to Penn State. Good luck.

Some leftover thoughts while coming back down to earth from last night...

The return of Farrell and Abruzesse from the Olympics and reuniting them with Matthew Coronato did a world of good for Matthew's game. He is emerging as a stud justifying Calgary's choosing him at #13. He had a great two weeks between the RPI series and the just concluded tournament semis and finals. Deserved the Most Outstanding Player award. I'm hoping Calgary leaves him alone and that he returns for one or two more seasons. The Calgary TV crew between periods the other night on ESPN+ had Coronato as the #1 prospect for the Flames.

Ian Moore had a tough night against Clarkson with an especially egregious giveaway that led to Clarkson's third goal. He more than made up for it last night not only with his goal and setting up the game winner but battling hard in the D zone all night. Yes he is overmatched at times but his game is getting better every week.

The Jersey Boys line really missed Farinacci this weekend. Not sure what the issue is but his absence really hurt the line. Zachery Karpa played a little out of control at times and had zero chemistry with Gaffney and Lafereierre. Teddy may want to try someone else as a pivot next weekend if JF doesn't make it back for the Regionals.

In the postgame on-ice interview, Jack Donato talked about how the team came together despite playing more experienced and heavier squads in Clarkson and Quinnipiac. He mentioned that even being down 3-2 to Clarkson didn't faze the team. To have that kind of composure for a young team is impressive.

On to (Albany? Worcester? Allentown?)

This was a happy and unexpected result given the last 30 minutes of play. The teams looked well matched before then. Now that they are in the NCAAs winning a game or two is possible if they can get out of their own way and stop taking as many silly penalties.

Not sure how you define well matched. Quinnipiac looked like they were on the power play for most of the game. They had the territorial advantage and their puck possession was a lot better than ours. Frankly we were lucky to come away with a win. That said, I’m thrilled that we are back in the NCAA tournaments despite the fact that we have to play the number one overall seed in Minnesota State.

This has nothing to do with tomorrow's game, but Colin Blackwell was traded to Toronto on Monday reuniting him with former teammate Alexander Kerfoot. If the Leafs had hung on to Jimmy Vesey, they could have had an all Crimson line. Cool thought.

Good showing from you all. Good season, congrats on beating us in the ECAC. Think you all showed that the East can compete with the best of the best in the West despite every person saying otherwise.

Thanks. It was tough to watch them go down today but they lost to a much better team. At times during the game, it was men against boys. We were slow out of the gate and State had a great game plan and structure that negated our speed. Kudos to them. They should be in Boston in two weeks.

No miracle comebacks today although if Matthew Coronato gets good wood on either the backhand or forehand opportunities he had late in the game, who knows? One thing is for sure; Minnesota State dominated us for most of the game. It wasn't just the shot disparity or the quality of chances. They outmuscled us and positionally knew exactly where to be to thwart our breakouts. Much like the ECAC tournament finale, we iced the puck way too much and gave State too much offensive zone time. They are very well coached.

Mitchell Gibson didn't have much help today, but he was outstanding in defeat. It could have easily been a rout early on if not for his heroics.

Hoping that a majority of the team returns next year. They have started something very positive this year and can build on it with a good to great recruiting class. They should be top 4 in the ECAC next season.

Thanks to the seniors for sticking around and guiding the program this year, especially Casey Dornbach. Great leadership.

They could have easily quit today knowing they were up against a much better team. Instead, they fought to the end. You can't ask for much more.

Unless you lose players to the NHL, H should take the next 2-3 ECAC titles; and even if you do, with great recruiting as has been consistently done H can still prevail. Amazing what the team did considering last year's lost season. In short, H is way ahead of the pack in the ECAC.
