Harvard Men's Hockey 2021-2022

Wow! That was a fun game to watch tonight. Watching these two teams both play well gave me the sensation I was watching a playoff game. I am impressed with some of the younger players. Gaffney positively flies at times And Ian Moore plays with poise and skill. As there were just 6 players for Senior night, it was a reminder they will have almost everyone back next year. Hard to figure how far they will go this year. What are you all thinking in that regard?

Well, you stole my thunder. I was going to make similar comments, but you gave a great recap. Even though Quinny outshot us I thought our D played very well and did a good job of breaking out of our zone quickly not giving the Bobcats a ton of zone time. And while our offensive chances were limited, we had some glorious chances to score including Laferriere's ringer off the post and Deveaux's great chance in front that he missed wide left. Gaffney was a thorn in the side of Quinny all night. They had no answer for him. We need to better on faceoffs but that's about my only complaint.

And on Senior Night, it was only fitting that Casey Dornbach got the winner. Couldn't have written a better ending!

More worried about the concussion than the shoulder, though it could be both. Harvard should have a first round bye so hopefully he will be ready in 3 weeks when the playoffs start for Harvard.

Not sure how the PWR will work and I was hoping the Quinny win would give them more lift. Wondering if Harvard has to win the ECACs to make the NCAAs, which likely means beating Clarkson & Quinny.

This season was likely always going to be a bridge to next. Not sure if guys like Abruzesse and Thrun stay....but if they do, Harvard will be poised for a deep run next year if they stay healthy.

I just checked the standings. We've clinched third place so even if we lose all three games next weekend, we've got the bye. Hoping Farrell will be ready for the quarters. I'm guessing Teddy might give some of the guys the Princeton game off as it won't matter in the standings, at least for us.

I think we do have to win the ECAC tournament although perhaps making it the final and beating Clarkson will be enough to get us in. I wasn't expecting them to go this year thinking next year would be their year to make a run. So, I consider it a bonus if they make it.

I think Abruzezze will stay. Thrun, not so sure. But then again, who knows?

An interesting statistic, if the data were collected, is the ratio of shots on goal to goals scored. Last night v Union was a great example where we seemed to have numerous golden opportunities to score but no goal. It's been a pattern through the season. It's great to have 30-40 SOG, often significantly outshooting the opponent, but frustrating to see such great talent coming so close without finishing the play.

Otherwise, I would be interested in how others feel about the power play. Is it my imagination or has the PP become static and cumbersome rather than fluid and in constant motion? Perhaps this is an area where it requires a more experienced, mature team to excel. I may be asking for too much, but it seems to me our PP consists of pass, pause, reset, followed by rinse and repeat two or three times before a weak one timer that typically seems aimed for the goalie's chest. All this gives opposing the PK ample time to close down the lanes and easily block our shots.

Last, am I the only one who perceives the opposing goalies and teams to be at the top of their game when playing Harvard? I get it for rivals like Cornell and Yale, but every team seems to be pumped to beat Harvard and their goalies seem to make crazy acrobatic saves. However, while we seem inspired v Cornell, Yale, Q'pac, we might not show up for Brown, RPI, Union. Even at the Beanpot v BU and then BC we were not jumping on the puck and competing at anywhere near capacity. Are we easily intimidated by Big East teams?

Wondering if anyone has any idea on how Sean Farrell is doing? Hope he is feeling better.

I don't know how Sean is doing, but was concerned when he did not appear in the Union game last night. I assume he's still recovering. Let's hope he's good to go in the quarter-finals!

I don't think we're intimidated by Hockey East. We came back to beat BC at Conte at the beginning of the month and could have beaten the Eagles again in the consolation. We beat UConn which has been playing well of late. I was disappointed in our efforts against Northeastern and especially UNH.

As for last night, I think some of it has to do with the fact that they have a bye clinched and so they're not going to move in the standings. That isn't an excuse; I'm just saying that it may have been more mental than anything else. I'd like one of the other goalies to play this weekend. I think Gibson needs a break. He hasn't played all that well except for last Saturday night against Quinny. I know he's going to get a week off with the rest of the team but it can't hurt to play Mullaly or Schaedig.

Unfortunately, today's game means something to Princeton. If the Tigers win in regulation, they leapfrog Brown into ninth place and would travel to the North Country to play the Saints. Will be interesting to see how Harvard plays it today. Mullaly started last night - would Teddy play Schaedig today? And who else might play today that hasn't played all season or sparingly? A rare meaningless regular season game for the Crimson.

Friday night vs. RPI went from R.I.P. to rip-roaring celebration. A fan I spoke with described Harvard's effort as somewhat desultory. (SAT Vocabulary word!) I was pouting about the 0-3 score and then suddenly they managed to find the net. I should know by now they have enough talent to do this kind of thing, but they also play like the young team that they are.

I took some pictures tonight. I was rusty after a year off; my settings were not quite right so the pictures are noisy. It was still fun to try. When I put my camera away late in the third period, they finally scored. Who knew I was controlling the game? haha

This morning I am hanging my head in shame. I bailed on my hockey team late in the third before THE RALLY OF ALL RALLIES!! What a comeback! Not sure how RPI recovers from this one. They had this game sewed up - the Crimson looked flat and out of synch all night. Teddy tried changing up the lines and nothing seemed to work. The D treated the puck like it was a grenade waiting to go off. Front to back, they looked young and inexperienced. Then...

We had a line that was playing great - Gaffney, Laferriere, and Farinacci - why does Donato break up that line? Makes zero sense to me. Gaffney looked lost on the 4th line. I would move Donato to the 4th line and have Gaffney back on the on the line referenced above and have Farrell on the 3rd line with Dornbach and Shore. Let's see what Donato does tonight, but that line was Harvard's best these last few weeks and to go away from it was strange

And they have a great moniker; the Jersey Boys line having all played for a New Jersey youth hockey team. Yeah, I'm glad that they were reunited last night. Gaffney is an absolute beast for a kid his size. He drives the opposition bananas with his aggressive pursuit of the puck.

Okay, well last night was a major bummer on so many levels. Going up 2-0 and thinking the game and series was over expecting RPI to roll over was a major error in judgement. RPI, as they have done in this series, is consistently getting behind the Harvard D and getting way too many close in looks and chances at Gibson. How many times do we have to see these breakdowns that lead to 2 on 1 chances that wind up in the back of the net?? Seriously, what is the coaching staff doing about this? Or is this just youth and inexperience showing its hand? Either way, Harvard needs to clean this up if they have any hope of advancing to Lake Placid.

And don't get me started on the Farrell 5-minute major. Beyond ridiculous. The crew that officiated last night's game should be fired immediately. That was a disgrace. They missed egregious calls on RPI especially in OT that should have been called if Farrell's so-called penalty was the benchmark. I don't blame Teddy for losing his mind on that call.

I'm wondering if the emotional lift from Friday night's comeback was such a high that they had a bit of a letdown going into last night. If that is the case, then they should be plenty fired up about what happened to Farrell and last night's loss to bring their "A" game today and finish off the Engineers. And they should also get the benefit of the calls today if justice is to prevail.

Great series, kudos to RPI who were extremely tough. the game Friday was an all-timer, and an excellent effort on Saturday, having to kill a 5 and 2 minute penalty in OT. Had to watch the end of the game when I got home yesterday to see if a penalty should have been called when Coronato had a semi-breakaway on the open net. Could not believe there was no call, I wonder if Donato or the ECAC brought it up with the ref. RPI went down after that and had an excellent chance at a tying goal. Donato would have been livid, along with the few Harvard fans there. Unbelievable no-call in that situation.

That was one of several non-calls this weekend where the Crimson were jobbed. Not sure what ECAC officials have against Teddy. There’s got to be something going on that we don’t know about. Guarantee that those non calls would have been penalties if Cornell was on the receiving end at Lynah Rink.

Hats off to RPI. They had no quit whatsoever and did the best to expose the flaws in a talented but quite inexperienced team. If Coronato sticks around for a couple of years with a couple of the other talented underclassmen, this team has the potential to dominate and be tremendous fun to watch. Next year's power play should be several notches better for starters. In the here and now, though, just getting by Clarkson on Friday night and making it to Saturday night at Lake Placid looks like a stretch.

Agree with you about RPI. Their goalie may have been the best player in the series for either side. That said, beating a team three times in a season is a tough task and Harvard may surprise Clarkson on Friday. Especially if Gibson can play the way he did on Sunday.

Yup. Harvard could win it all in Lake Placid or get boat raced by Clarkson. Neither would surprise me. This is a very talented team hat is also extremely young and inexperienced. Bar taking that terrible penalty late in Game 3 vs RPI is Exhibit A of what you will get wit so many frosh D. Harvard should have beaten Clarkson at Bright and here's to a win on Friday.

Be interesting to see how the big sheet lends itself to Harvard speed and skill, but also Harvard's tendency to not stay goal side when on defense.

LP is no longer a big sheet.

I really hope the Abruzesse line comes back to play another season together. They were a one-man wrecking crew tonight. Clarkson had no answer for any of the players on that line even though they tried different lines to stop them. Crimson came to play tonight although their youth and inexperience showed up again. Dumb penalties, sloppy turnovers like Moore coughing up the puck behind his net leading to Clarkson‘s third goal and not winning enough board battles. And yet here they are playing for the ECAC championship and a chance to go to the NCAAs. After not playing tournament hockey for two years. Pretty remarkable.

also does anyone know why Farinacci wasn’t playing tonight?

Not sure on Farinacci. If Harvard can stay out of the box and Gibson can play half decent, I think Harvard has a good shot to win tonight.

If Abruzesse and Thrun come back next year, Harvard will be poised to make a very deep NCAA run.
