Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

Don't forget, our blog has audio from all 5 Olympians, including what it will be like to play against one another. You can find it here.

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

Great, great win by the girls tonight. From the moment the puck dropped, we were all over the Tigers. They never had a chance once we got the first goal. We rolled over them and the shot totals are misleading because Princeton never got more than 12 shots the entire game. There was so much to like about tonight's game, I don't know where to start. Game was over after the first period.

Okay, how about the forechecking. Relentless except for a brief period during the beginning of the second period. All three lines had tremendous jump and were all over the Princeton D.

Great passing. I mean superlative passing! The way we moved the puck tonight was dazzling. Princeton had no idea how to defend and were back on their heels all night. Our forwards sliced through them with ease. I could not believe what I was seeing. Best passing display all season.

Strong D and great backchecking as well. We gave Princeton only one or two odd man breaks the entire game. We controlled the neutral zone and beat them to the puck all night.

I really don't understand how we lost to this team this year. Really, I'm serious. Princeton doesn't skate all that well and their D is immobile. Their goalie wasn't sharp to say the least. Harvard played with a lot of jam; Ryabkina's second goal and Randi Griffin's goal (is she on fire or what?) were close in opportunities where both players outfought Princeton players for position. We need to do more of that to win this tournament.

If we play this way tomorrow afternoon, the series will be over in two. Princeton has given us trouble in the past and I'm sure they'll play better tomorrow. But we are really firing on all cylinders and the line combos (that third line of Wheeler between the Chute sisters is dynamic) gave Princeton fits all night. They don't have the answers and we can only beat ourselves at this point.

One final note. Congratulations to Katey Stone for becoming the winningest coach in D-1 women's hockey. What a tremendous accomplishment. I've have not always agreed with the way she uses her bench but no arguments tonight. She prepared her team to play tonight and it showed. Everyone contributed. I'm hoping that Katey gets named as the Olympic coach for 2014 for Team USA. She deserves it.

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

Two down and two to go for the tournament title. We didn't look quite as sharp as last night but we had more than enough to defeat Princeton this afternoon. Our passing was not as crisp and we got a bit sloppy in the third period but there was no question who the better team was this weekend. Princeton simply never showed up. How we lost to this team is beyond me. The Tigers really can't do much offensively and defensively, they are mediocre. I really want to know how they finished sixth. Heck, Dartmouth is a better team and would have submitted a better effort.

Given that Clarkson and Quinnipiac lost today, we have to wait until tomorrow to find out if we stay in Cambridge or head to Potsdam. Hoping that Quinnipiac gets in and somehow upsets Cornell so that if we can take down the Knights, we get the championship game at Bright.

Congratulations to Coach Stone and the Crimson Ladies for their great weekend series against Princeton, and a wish for continued success in your travels to upstate New York.

Sorry RPI ruined your plan to host the championship against Quinnipiac. But isn't it great that we will hopefully see another RPI v. Harvard showdown at Bright during the playoffs ;)

Running the RPI goalie's stats, Cornell could definitely have a tough game on their hands.

Here's the relevant info for the semis on our blog. First round recap, key player (see the stats for RPI, incredible), season series, etc.

I wouldn't mind another shot at RPI. Even though they have won the last three, two went to OT and both could have been and should have been Harvard wins. I think the Crimson win it if we make it to Sunday and host the championship.

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

I'll be keeping an anxious eye on this one from Ithaca. If I had to pick one of our two teams on Friday I'd want to see win, it'd be the women. They don't have two games left in a series to get even, and they've got a much bigger prize much closer to them.

Here's hoping my late Friday night is spent trying to figure out how to get to Minnesota, be it as broadcaster or insane fan. (And then hope it's all blown away when I find out I have to make the trip to Albany instead. :D OK, so I'm cheering for the best of all possible worlds at this point, sue me, I'm an optimist in pessimist's clothing.)

Here is a really insane thought. Harvard makes it to Albany, the women make it to the NCAA championship game and you get to broadcast from Albany one night and Minneapolis the next day (assuming that it is possible to get from one location to the other in time of course) :)

Seriously, I do hope it is the women that prevail because you're right, they have fewer games to reach the Holy Grail. And wouldn't it be sweet to win the championship after last year's heartbreaker in the ECAC semis?

Well I just meant on FRIDAY night if I had to pick one of the two. Then on Saturday and Sunday I'd want the men to win.

I'd like to say we're going to be able to go in some fashion for at least the championship if they make it, but it would take a lot of horse trading on my part. And believe me, I'd love to be there for it so I'll try my best to get WHRB there, but if it doesn't work out we can take some consolation that a WHRB alum and a Harvard grad will have the call for USCHO and CBS College Sports.

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

Well, tonight was just one of those nights. Nothing went right on defense and in goal. Bellamy was hung out to dry although she also has to shoulder some of the blame. Probably the worst I've seen the Crimson play in a tournament game since '03 when we lost to Dartmouth in the ECAC tournament finale. God, was that ugly. This was worse because it was Cornell. Every mistake we made found its way to the back of our net. Incredible how many mistakes we made tonight.

I really don't think the score indicates the differences between the two teams. Harvard is a much better team than it showed tonight but it really doesn't matter at this point. Season's over and it's time to look ahead to next season.

I guess the best you can say is that the team really overachieved this year. I didn't expect them to get this far and certainly not to have home ice for the NCAA quarterfinal. So kudos to the captains and Coach Stone for pulling together and overcoming a slow start to make it this far.

Best of luck to the graduating seniors. May your futures be filled with happier moments, much prosperity, joy and FUN! Remember that in your senior year, you won the Beanpot and double bageled Minnesota, then the #2 team in the country.

Re: Harvard Crimson Women 09-10

I was sorry to see the Harvard women lose last night but I am very grateful for all the great hockey we got to watch this season.

Last night involved a number of things. There were major defensive lapses that cannot be attributed to any one player and Bellamy started with two breakaways and two goals on the first three shots she faced which had to mess up her confidence in the crease. There were some major defensive lapses last night. She has come through brilliantly since Christina's knee injury and I hope she does well next year.

I was wondering about injuries. When Liza went down she looked really hurt and although she did get back into the game the next period she was not herself. She skated like she was wearing lead skates. Hope she is OK.

I also noticed that a few seconds before the game ended Josie Pucci went down with an apparent head injury. I did not see her come up at the end of the game. Does anyone know if she is OK? I really like watching that girl play, good skater and strong shot. I am looking forward to seeing her next year.

I have no idea if any of the players actually read this forum but if they do, please accept my thanks for a wonderful season of hockey, I enjoyed it.

Ave atque vale

Ave atque vale

Let me add my congratulations. This year's team should be very proud of what they accomplished.

Besides the Beanpot, the NCAA berth, double bagelling the #2 team, and having the fourth-best overall regular season results of any college in the nation, they showed considerable character. Remember that they started the season dressing only 9 forwards and 5 defense. If anybody has a nagging injury or flu-like symptoms, tough luck, and hope you don't go to overtime. (The happiest moment I had while coaching youth soccer was with a group of girls who had endured a couple of seasons in which they often put only 10, and occasionally 9, players on the field, when I got to stand up and tell them, after they eventually ended a season in first place, that it would have been easy for them to give up back then, but they didn't give up, and now they were champions.) It would also have been easy for the Crimson later this year to have folded up their tents after losing Kessler, but again they rallied and they all contributed to Laura Bellamy's 10-5-2, 1.68 GA statistics over those final 17 games.

I do assume that at least some of the players have read this forum, and for that reason, being familiar with the dynamics of a women's college team, tend not to single out individuals for comment. Having the esteem or censure of coaches and teammates is plenty to carry around in that situation. But honestly, I do think every player has a lot to be proud of this year.

Liza has an ankle injury - not serious but enough to slow her down considerably. She'll be fine for next season.

Pucci, I'm not sure about. May be a recurrence of the concussion she suffered early in December. Hope not but you never know. Fortunately, she too will have time to heal and be back next season.

One thing I am curious about. Jen Brawn was not introduced on senior night leading me to think she will be back next year. They may have gotten a redshirt exemption for her much the way they did for Mark Benning in the eighties. If that's the case, our D will be even better.

I saw posted on Hux's thread I believe a reference to a young woman named Coyne (don't know her first name) as someone who was possibly coming to Harvard? Haven't seen anything since. Wonder if she is still on the radar.

I have a hard enough time keeping track of who is coming here never mind who might be coming here. :D

Hard to be in the Girl's / Women's Hockey world without at least knowing who this one is, never mind what she's capable of on the ice. Here's an article from the Comittments page for starters. She's also competing in the 2010 U-18 Women's World Championship in Chicago as we speak. There are game stas on that thread if you're interested in seeing how she performs at the elite level in her age group.
