Harvard Crimson - 2015-2016

Re: Harvard Crimson - 2015-2016

First of all, wishing the best for that Harvard player. That's a tough go. Agree with a lot of this. As much as I love the Women's game, the thing that drives me cotton pickin' crazy is that so many play with their heads down. To me it almost goes beyond the coaching. Perhaps there should be checking, to force them to play with their heads up. I really don't know. I think the Dartmouth player got her elbows high, though more as a defensive reaction. (hasn't had any penalties this year.. if I'm not mistaken. Should have picked up 2 minutes elbowing, I think.

I agree with this. I think its more a function of so many players playing with their heads down. I don't see why there can't be checking. Essentially there is checking except for open ice but if that rule was changed, more players would have their heads up. That would improve the level of play as having your head up gives the player that extra little bit of time to make a good play. The really good players play with their heads up anyway. Not saying they wouldn't get injured sometimes but that is a big difference between the really top notch players and the rest.

Then I would think this is a matter of coaching and good habits that should start when these women begin playing organized hockey. I have a close friend whose daughter is applying to Harvard and plays high school hockey (she's a center). Her older brother and male cousins all are playing and she played with them growing up so she was taught at an early age to keep her head up. Plus her dad is a volunteer coach. Not every young woman who wants to play hockey will get that kind of attention but these fundamentals should be taught early on. Especially with the speed and physicality picking up every year.

This is a good point about coaching. In my observation, in the girl's game, a lazy coach can get away without coaching to play with head up. It certainly is harder to learn and if you are not going to get your head knocked off by a check, the incentive to take the time and effort to teach that way may not be present. Girls who play boys into the checking years are forced to play with their heads up. You can see the difference with those girls. Girls who play exclusively girls need more coaching to do that as there is less of a self preservation incentive so if they are not getting good coaching, they may never learn.

Re: Harvard Crimson - 2015-2016

Lexie Laing scores and is given first star of the game tonight v Cornell, a nice gesture considering the sad news about Denna.

Re: Harvard Crimson - 2015-2016

Tough game tonight at B-L. Both teams were coming off a long layoff and it showed in the first period. Grace Zarzecki scored a PP jamming one in at the post to give the Crimson a 1-0 lead. Final goal came from Lexie Laing as previously noted in an earlier post. Harvard had the better of the play for most of the game although Cornell did show some life in the second period and late in the third.

The Crimson were shorthanded tonight missing four forwards including Mary Parker and Haley Mullins. I saw the team at the BU game last night and both looked fine to me so I'm not sure what's going on. In addition, Dani K and Erin Ozturk did not dress. And Karly Heffernan had to fly in from Germany today. Short rosters don't do well over the long haul and we are going to need reinforcements soon with BC coming up in ten days. That could be a rout of epic proportions if we don't have some depth.

When these things happen in sports it puts everything into perspective. Let's hope that she has a full recovery.

Amen to the full recovery. Thanks everyone for the links. I was out of town for the holidays and missed this story. This has to be weighing heavily on Lexie and Brianna. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

Re: Harvard Crimson - 2015-2016

I concur with the comments of the posters above concerning Denna Laing. What a terrible thing. She certainly is in my prayers. I saw an article in the paper and failed to make the connection.

Re: Harvard Crimson - 2015-2016

Once comment on the Cornell game - It appeared that Harvard did not get credit for a goal. About 2:30 into the third period I saw a hard shot go straight into the Cornell goal and immediately bounce straight back out again. The light did not go on and play continued. I was sitting in the back row to the side the goal and had a clear view of the in-out of the puck. The man in front of me snd the man just across the aisle also saw exactly the same thing.

Even with two refs they cannot see everything. They have complex jobs and have to watch for many things. Until last season there were always goal judges but they apparently eliminated them for cost reasons and replaced them with cameras above the goal. I believer the cameras are used only for review if there is a protest or if the refs want to review the play. I would like to see a return to goal judges, whose only duty is to watch for a puck crossing the goal line.

It would not have changes the result of today's game but in many games one goal would make a difference.

I wouldn't give the officials a free pass at all. They were brutal. They took a goal away from Lexie Laing in the first period for some unexplained reason that had Katey Stone about to lose her mind. That crew last night was pathetic. They need to terminated immediately. Laing's goal was so clear it wasn't funny. The whole team looked at the officials like "What gives?". This is the second year in a row this has happened to the Crimson and I'm serious when I say that the officials for some reason just seem to have it out for Harvard.

Re: Harvard Crimson - 2015-2016

You might look at the final score of this afternoon's game and conclude that Harvard blew Colgate away. Not the case at least for the first two periods. The Raiders put a lot of pressure on Harvard's D and fought hard for two periods. They outshot Harvard and out chanced them as well. Colgate has 15 underclasswomen and will be heard from in the next two years. Once they figure out that they don't have to make the perfect pass to create scoring opportunities, they will be dangerous. Very dangerous.

Good to see the frosh get involved with Kate Hallett scoring the second Harvard goal taking a behind the net pass from Audrey Warner and Kaitlin Tse taking a beautiful cross ice pass from Syd Daniels and snapping a wrist shot dead center to make it 3-1.

Saw Dani K before the game and the good news is that she'll be back in a couple of weeks. The news on Haley Mullins and Mary Parker is iffy at best. Hoping they return by the end of January for the Quinnipiac/Princeton weekend. Doesn't sound likely that we'll see them before then.

I agree that Colgate is the real deal this year, nobody can take them lightly. Haven't seen enough of them to know where the difference is vs. previous years but they will be in the mix at the end of the season and could surprise one of the top teams in the playoffs.

I think the difference is their speed and forecheck. It's so much better than in previous seasons. Defensively, they don't do a very good job of picking up the trailer as Harvard scored three goals when the trailing forward was left alone with a clear shot at the goalie. If they figure out their offensive zone schemes, watch out because they can forecheck you into next week and wear you out.

Re: Harvard Crimson - 2015-2016

A word of caution about archived video of this weekend's games: both North Country teams provide free live videocasts, which is a VERY kind of them.....but if you would prefer to watch the games non-live, a spin from the links on the Harvard website shows that StL has its most recent game available on archive but apparently only the most recent game, so that tonight's game may not be accessible after puck drop tomorrow afternoon. And the most recent archived game on the Clarkson site took place a year ago, so be careful.

Should be an exciting weekend!
