Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

This is where I am at. I'd recommend these NHL GM's draft the Ivy League kids in the 6th and 7th round not the third round where it hurts more when you lose a guy to free agency.

Or do more to ensure you retain your investment. Any player that had the type of career after he was drafted is going to have a lot of options.

Choice is good for people and for hockey. GMs have to earn it just like the companies we as consumers subscribe to have to as well. Imagine if you could not get out of your phone or cable company based on them picking you as a customer 3-4 years ago?

Sounds crazy if you think it through that lens.

Interesting that there are crickets in here now that the other side of the story is being brought to light.

Money isn't everything to everyone. If it was, Vesey would have signed last year with Nashville.

Respect.

Haha that article is from 4 pm, give us some time!

As nick said, there are three sides to every story. Truth probably in between. Thanks for the link.

Poile is heavily involved with USA hockey. If he still is down the line and Vesey translates at the pro level, things could get real interesting.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

As a fan of Crimson men's ice hockey and all of its players, I have followed Jimmy Vesey's college career with great enthusiasm. I think that what is lost in all of this is the fact that in addition to playing some hockey, Jimmy, like the majority of his teammates, will have enjoyed four years immersed in a Harvard undergraduate education and everything that this means. Whether an NHL team should use a draft pick to select an "Ivy" skater or not, and the disappointment often expressed when a student athlete stays in and finishes his academic program (!) seems to me to be missing the point.

Just like any business deal, you really can't be certain what will happen until the contract is actually signed. Jimmy has showed some strength of character which I admire, in that he repeatedly chose to remain with his team, and more importantly with his high quality college education experience, instead of cashing in on an earlier NHL paycheck start. It just might be that he is with the current decision still considering things like where he wants to play and live, which family and friends he wants to be close by, and which teams/programs have the most meaning to him.

Among other things, the article put in my mind the image of NHL execs hanging around outside the Crimson locker room after disappointing losses in the Beanpot and (especially) the East Regional. Why not go to Lake Placid and try to corner him post-loss there too? Seeing Jimmy's look of disappointment as he slowly got up from his last crash of the BC net last Friday, it clearly was not the time or place to press him about any important decision, 3 times.

All in all, it has been great seeing Jimmy Vesey and his senior teammates wear the Crimson with pride. I wish him all the best in his next endeavor, which begins of course after his college graduation in Harvard Yard in May - not outside some locker room after a disappointing hockey game in Worcester in March.

In the immortal words of Matt Cushman, " you know i don't do contracts, but my word is stronger that oak" :)

In this morning's Boston Globe, Kevin Paul Dupont writes that the Bruins may be considering trading for Vesey's rights and trying to sign him right away. Boston is going down like the Titanic and needs goal scoring in the worst way. If the Bruins were to convince Nashville to make a deal (not likely seeing as the Preds would ask for someone like Pastrnak in return), Vesey could play right away and still finish his studies and graduate with his class. I still believe he is headed to Toronto but it wouldn't surprise me if the Bruins made a strong push to get him.

The Predators are about to lose him outright, they would take anything in return. The Bruins would take him, burn a year off his ELC, play him for a few games and then not be able to play him in the playoffs because they traded for him after the trade deadline.

Mr. Jacobs wants his playoff home games to pad his wallet so we'll see what happens. I guess he just hopes it will help them make the playoffs then hope the rest of the crew can get as far as possible (ie - get as many home games as possible) without him.

Harvard picks up a late recruit, Frederic Gregoire out of St. Georges. He is a '96 so will be a 20 year old frosh.

He led all of prep hockey in scoring on a points per game basis.

We need help up front so this is great news if he can translate his prep success into a solid ECAC rookie season

You would think that Poile and the Preds would agree with your line of thinking but I bet they are too steamed at the moment to think straight. At this point, something is better than nothing although I don't see a trade at this point. I'm guessing that both the Leafs and the Bruins figure they will land him in August so why give up anything now? Still thinking the Leafs will win out but it would be great to see Jimmy in a Bruins uniform next season. As long as someone else is coaching the team.
