Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

6-2, that is nice
Always nice to beat Cornell and especially nice to beat them in Ithaca.

Amen to that. Although as Bothman said, Cornell could not get anything going offensively. We scored six goals on 23 shots so Cornell's netminding isn't what they are used to in past seasons. Still, it was a four point weekend and it looks like the boys got the wake up call from last Saturday's game. Whatever was said in practice sunk in for at least this weekend. And the PP looks like it is back on track which is even better.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Okay. Here are the detailed notes from the game:
- Wiley Sherman was a man possessed. Best player on the ice. Was hitting everything, taking the body, moving the puck with purpose. Someone gave him a talking to this week I think.
- The rest of the D was still fairly pedestrian. Jaw took a few huge licks and I feel he has been tentative ever since he came back.
- Anderson had some real sloppy giveaways, but played ok
- Newell got tagged pretty hard. Looked like he was favoring his arm/shoulder. He may be out so we should look for him against Princeton on Friday. If he is out, I would expect Aiken to get the nod.
- Cornell could not skate with Harvard. Had to take penalties cause they just could not move their feet. Very little offensive creativity. Was very underwhelmed. They can hit, but multiple penalties missed (charging penalty when a Cornell player took a run at Jaw).
- Gillam is not very good which is Cornell's biggest issue. They don't have that lockdown goalie and he also took a swipe at Malone as he went by one time. He will be Cornell's undoing.
- Harvard's PP was excellent. Tic tac toe puck movement. Cornell could not no anything. Love that Donato moved a 4th forward (Blackwell) to PP as the puck movement was excellent. We don;t have a D that can consistently hit the net with a slap shot (outside of Sherman) so no point in having 2 D on the points. Will be much different next year when Marino and Fox show up (ie, think Patrick McNally)
- Face-offs continue to plague the team
- Nice to get some offensive contribution from all 4 lines
- Seb Lloyd did not play all weekend. I thought Horton looked great on the 3rd line.

All in all, an awesome weekend. When was the last time Harvard took 4pts on this road trip? Princeton is a classic trap game so hope the boys come to play Friday night with BC and the Beanpot looming on Monday.

Was Lloyd benched this weekend? I agree that Horton has looked good and he has the size to go with some decent speed. Needs to work on his offensive creativity.

Regarding the physicality. That is the only way Cornell knows how to play Harvard. If they even for a moment thought about trying to skate with us, the score would have been 12-2. Schaefer has never preached a skating game because that's not his style. When we ignore the cheap stuff and stick to what we do best, we are in good shape.

Hope that Newell is okay. Even if he can't play next Friday, we should take care of business against the Tigers. Of course I felt that way against Clarkson and looked what happened. So I'm not taking any game for granted and neither should the team. I'm guessing they got an earful from the coaches this week based on our taking four points this weekend.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Bored on a Sunday AM so I was looking at next year's Harvard team, incorporating those we lose to graduation and those we have coming in (assuming they arrive in Cambridge).

There is a drop off on offense (Vesey and Criscuolo). We do lose Bergin and Jaw on Defense, but with Marino and Fox coming in, I think the D is better. I think the goalie is better as well given Madsen has another year or if Lackey spends the summer working on his rebound control.

We will have to win more 3-2 games as opposed to 6-5 games.

2017-2018 is going to be a swoon year for the Crimson, unless we land a big time frosh. We lose Moy, Kerfoot, Malone, etc - and we don't really bring in any high impact frosh to replace.

2016-2017 looks like this (We have 5 extra defenseman which is crazy. Makes me wonder if we will have some transfers or if folks decide to focus 100% on academics):

2016-2017 Forwards Depth
1st Line A. Kerfoot Moy Donato Krusko
2nd Line Esposito Malone C. Kerfoot Ellis
3rd Line Horton Zerter Gossage Floodstrand Zieolonka
4th Line Lloyd Perrault Tringale Szeto
Defenseman
1st Pairing Sherman Fox Dumbrovsky Begoon
2nd Pairing Marino Anderson Baughmann Aiken
3rd Pairing Newell Olson Hartje
Goalie
Starter Madsen Lackey Gornet

So we'll probably not be ranked in the top ten next year but I'm okay with that. More than likely one or two of the D will transfer or quit the program and focus on academics. I'm worried about where the goals will be coming from.

Agreed. I am more concerned with where the goals will come from 2 years from now (2017-2018 season where I think we will be very challenged offensively), but when you lose Vesey and Criscuolo, other guys (Moy, Kerfot, Malone, etc) will have to step up. We will also start to get a lot more contribution from our defense next year.

Ok. Back to this year, especially since that was hopefully a road trip that brought the team together and righted the ship (hope that the team is healthy after that rugby, I mean hockey game up in Ithaca).

I'm thinking that Zerter-Gossage, Donato and possibly Floodstrand will take on a greater share of the scoring burden. At least I hope that is the way it shakes out. You know that Moy, Alexander Kerfoot, and Sean Malone will be counted on along with Esposito and maybe one of the frosh. Colton Kerfoot maybe?

Yeah, I'm concerned about that rollerball, er, hockey match and the fallout. Hoping that we came out of it okay. Fortunately only one game this week.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Big game tonight at home vs Princeton. Need to maintain momentum from last weekend and not look ahead to BC on Monday. Princeton is too good a team and Harvard will lose if they are not focused. Harvard beat Princeton 3-0 earlier, but it was a 1-0 game late into the 3rd period and I believe a couple of ENGs brought the score to 3-0.

Will be interesting to see what ailments came out of that rugby match up in Ithaca. In particular, Newell on D who left the Cornell game in the 1st....which is another thing to build on from last weekend. Harvard beat Cornell while playing the majority of the game with 5D.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

I missed last night's game but noticed in the box score that Dumbrovsky and Baughman played in place of Newell and Olson. Wondering how they looked.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Please please please please please beat BC.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Not sure why an SLU fan would be obsessed with BC but okay! I think BC matches up well with Harvard, should be a good one.

I imagine the whole league here is cheering for us, esp. with 4 teams from 13-16 in the pairwise. That said, most likely a good game that results in the same old thing. As a (football) Jets fan I've learned better to be pessimistic and be pleasantly surprised if something goes right. That's how I approach the Beanpot now. We can't even win the draw to be the home team ever...

Good luck Crimson !!!
- Screen Shots - don't let Thatcher Demko see anything until it's too late !!!
- Crash the net and bury the rebounds !!!
- Redirect shots !!!
- Block shots !!!!
- Scoring from all 4 lines !!!
- Stay out of the box !!!

I have not had a good feeling on the Beanpot for many years, but I feel very good for tomorrow. I think this team matches up very well with BC. If Harvard's D can play smart and consistent (don't need anything spectacular), then I think Harvard can win. This is one of the few teams that can throw out a set of forwards that can outdepth and outskate the Eagles.

Agreed
Harvard is a better team if they play their game.
Wildcard is BC's White

Attending again this year, no optimism, but if Madsen plays well it will be a reason for hope as the season winds down. I'm not worried about Harvard scoring, but how they handle adversity, and if they do have a lead in the third period, can they finish well.
