Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

The third period notwithstanding, I was very impressed by the Crimson. Speed, size, gave BU fits with their forecheck. IMHO this team will be in Tampa.

I hope you're right. :)

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

What a great game that was. Worth 3 flat tires on freaking I-95 in the Lyme area. God Almighty. We need road work here.

Must say, I was impressed with Harvard Stadium. First time I've ever been on campus. Harvard makes Yale look small time. Except when it comes to the hockey rink. Or say Yale owns New Haven.

You are kidding right? You think the Yale Whale is more impressive than Bright Landry?? Seriously? There is no comparison. BL blows away the Whale all day, all night.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

So lots of questions coming out of last night's debacle. Mine are as follows:
1) How does this team respond to such a demoralizing and gift-wrapped loss?
2) What has becometh of Harvard's defense? Has it been masked by outstanding goaltending that had a bad night last night? Why is Braden Jaw not playing? Why is Aiken (walk on) playing and not some more heralded recruits (Dumbrovsky out of BCHL)
3) How will Donato manage games late with leads? What can be learned by what happened in the final 5 mins of the 3rd period last night with what was seemingly a cushy 2 goal lead?
4) How does Blackwell respond to what was a very tough game for him personally?

We will start to see some of this on display against the #1 team in the nation at MSG, in just over 24hrs from now. Doesn't get any easier for these guys.

Okay, I'll take a flyer on this since I love a challenge.

1. There can be only one response. Come out Saturday and play 60 minutes. No excuses. Be ready for war.
2. The D was fine for the first half of the game, then wilted once BU turned up the heat. It was really the last five minutes that killed them. That and their penalty kill (although I'll forgive them for the 5-3 - that's tough for anyone). I don't know why Aiken is playing and if Jaw is hurt. Would like to see Dombrovsky or Baughman.
3. It is a definite concern but I think between he and Pearl, they'll figure it out. Remember how we got lit up last year by SLU at B-L? Then March happened. Maybe we go with our four best D for the last five minutes? Bench guys like Blackwell when he isn't paying attention to his defensive responsibilities? All possible.
4. I'm sure he got a well deserved tongue lashing after the game. Colin plays with a lot of energy and speed; he just needs to be reminded that the rink is 200 by 85 and that he needs to cover his part consistently. And not to do something stupid like yap at the ref.

Please. Ingalls is art. Bright is Matthews, part deux. Just Matthews might be of more historic value. Which is why Bright is right next to Harvard Stadium!

dunno..... i really enjoy games at thompson and ignalls. bright is ok but a little "eh". i'll give bright a spot over meehan though (but i like meehan too). bright really did a great job opening up that concourse and putting in the rooms for your donors. was rather impressed with that. and as i typed last night i want to take advantage of running next door to the bar and see how that works during intermission.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

As to the end of the game: Blackwell's intemperate words to the ref were came just a bit over four minutes from the buzzer. BU's power play goal came at just under four minutes to go. In the last four minutes BU scored three times. I think Blackwell's penalty turned the game around for BU. A penalty due to excessive effort to get to the puck I could accept, mouthing off was a selfish penalty. Maybe Teddy should have Blackwell sit for a while. (Unless they have him play after the trainers tape his mouth shut ;) )

Now Bright is Matthews?? Ingalls is art??? This is so laughable. You really have no idea what you are talking about.

Wow, thanks, a spot over meehan. The rink that has yellow lighting. Yup, we should be so grateful. Yeeesh!

Bright was actually modeled after Thompson because Billy Cleary thought so highly of what Dartmouth did in building that rink. It has the best sightlines of any rink I've visited in the East save for maybe Aggannis. I just don't understand what you people are looking at when you compare rinks. Artistry? Really? You want art, go visit the Yale Art Gallery or the Fogg at Harvard. Or the Clark at Williams College.

Seriously, Mookie.

Meehan = morgue. It is the worst rink in the ECAC and on top of that, it has zero atmosphere. Teams go to Meehan to die.

I don't disagree with you regarding sightlines. Absolutely a quality rink from that angle. Also seems to have influenced what QU has going but far more enjoyable. TD's location is kind of cool, though, at least when the sun is up. But altogether? Ingalls is the best rink I've ever been in. I have no idea how many times I've been there. Matthews is probably the second best but best historically. Matthews is worth a repeat trip over Bright. Harvard Stadium is a different story.

perhaps, but that has to do with the team skating on the ice. i've been to games at bright that had nobody in recent seasons too. i'm trying to just comment on the rink itself.

meehan has that high ceiling and the bowl with high sides. not that bad and not the worst as you may be making it out to be. i'd say it's better for viewing than providence's.

better than merrimack :D better than holy cross. better than bentley :p

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Holy Cross has the best horizintal sightlines, right above the players up close!

those 3 at the bottom were general rinks!

agree, hart had high sloping views there behind the bench.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

A little harsh. We're not second tier. We had a meltdown tonight but it isn't like this is a regular occurrence. Look at how we came back to win in Minnesota over the weekend. Yes, we have problems on D and in goal but it isn't like we can't do something about it. If we learn from this and take it to the Bobcats on Saturday, all will be forgiven. Right?

3-0 Quinnipiac not ten minutes into the game.

Been to Bright pre and post renovation, a little like lipstick on a pig. Ingalls is consistently ranked as one of the top ten college rinks in the country. Never seen Bright on any list. The only thing better at Bright are the seats. BTW 4-0 QU, ouch.

Sorry, I don't see it. And I really don't care about lists of college rinks. I can make up a list of just about anything and convince a group of people of its merits.

And yeah, tonight's game isn't exactly putting me in a great mood.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Okay, so now we have a hockey game after two periods.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Here's the story tonight:
1) Great comeback and heart both for the team and for Blackwell.
2) Harvard's D is slow. There is no two ways about it. Yes, they miss Jaw, but this D is constantly on their heels and playing in fear.
3) Wiley Sherman better figure out who he is because he plays awfully soft for someone who is 6'6''. An NHL D goes down and gives up the body and blocks the shot on that GWG. Sherman didn't do that and who knows what would have happened if he had.
4) Vesey was invisible for most of the game. He shows up in the stat sheet, but this is now 3 straight games (Minnesota, BU, and Quinnipiac) where he is playing on the perimeter almost like he is a decoy. This team goes nowhere if he doesn't stop playing like he's afraid of getting injured and not getting a NHL pay day.
5) PP is not as good with 2 D on the point. Like to see us go back to having Donato on point with Newell.
6) Amazing efforts on the goals. They were all highlight reel goals, especially Moy's and Donato's

Time to get back to ECAC hockey and a very hungry SLU team and Clarkson come to town next weekend.

Have to say, you might see the ice better at the Bright (and I think that's arguable) but this isn't even a conversation to have. Ingalls is the way nicer rink, with only SLU having any claim to having a nicer rink in the whole league.

So I saw the first period. 7 straight goals against in 23 minutes (going back to the BU game) was enough for me so I missed the comeback and also the eventual OT loss. Nice to learn something finally woke them up - giving up a goal immediately after the timeout was just the worst.
