So... three tournaments and home vs. BU. It's an interesting non-conference schedule to say the least. But I like it.

I guess I'm a little confused here, as I wasn't following as intensely during the beginning of his career. Harvard had him listed as a junior on the roster this past year. Is the question as to whether he could play in 2016/17?

It's an Ivy League question, from what I've read. Just because you have NCAA eligibility doesn't mean you can play for an Ivy team - we see this a lot in basketball, where guys who redshirted at some point end up transferring to another school where you can be a grad student and play your 5th year of basketball. What tends to happen in football, however, is that a lot of the players don't take spring classes for at least one semester, so from a school perspective, in their "5th year" they are seniors in college and have not graduated yet. So if he was listed as a junior this year, the question is if that's an athletic junior or an academic junior - i.e., did he take a year off academically so that he still has a year of classes left? If not, even if he has a year of eligibility left, he likely would not be able to play, at least not for Harvard.
Sorry if this isn't the issue at all - I'm taking my best guess as to what the possible holdup might be.

Yes. Shonn Miller (Cornell Basketball) who was either Player or Co-Player of the year in the Ivy League missed a year due to a physical ailment. He was not granted a 5th year and as such, is going to use his last year of athletic eligibility to play at UConn next year.
I don't have the data to gauge whether medical red shirts have ever been granted, and if so, what the underlying rationale was.
This is why I don't expect Blackwell to be back even though I really hope he is. If not back, would be interesting to see if other schools would take a run at him (ie, Shonn Miller from UConn) as Blackwell's services would be coveted by every major hockey school for sure.

Does anyone know how Western Michigan (Notre Dame tourney) and Ferris State (Minny tourney) are supposed to stack up this year? Harvard could have one of the tougher non-conference schedules in the country this year....but I think this is a team that will be ready for it. Biggest questions will be in goal and on the blue line. I don't think many teams will be able to score points with Harvard this year given the caliber and depth of forwards they have.

IIRC (and I may not be) Vinnie Auger (Cornell) was granted a medical redshirt about 15 years ago. While he was injured he was not enrolled in classes, so that may have factored in.

Not exactly true. Mark Benning completed his academic requirements but came back for one more year in '87 as a grad student because he had one year of NCAA eligibility left. So there is precedence for Blackwell. I don't know if he didn't register or has credits left but I'm hoping that the Ivy League will grant him one more year. He is a dynamo.

If so, that's definitely not the rule anymore. Besides Shonn Miller, I can think of a few examples of players leaving to go do their 5th year elsewhere. Andrew Van Nest, as one example, transferred to BC after graduating Harvard and actually played against the Crimson in a 79-63 Harvard win in the 2013 season.

Moy got drafted (#175 to Nashville) which is great news and shows that hard work pays off. Will we see Vesey and Moy together at the next level? 2016 defenseman John Marino was picked in 6th round to Edmonton. He is at the South Shore Kings though would love to see him play in the USHL next season before donning Crimson.

Hmm. This makes Blackwell coming back even more important although Hart never really lived up to expectations. He's not going to crack that lineup in Tampa anytime soon.

A couple of updates:
1) McNally signs 2 year deal with San Jose
2) Harvard #4 preseason in Bucigross' college hockey poll
3) The Hart signing is very interesting. Doesn't make sense given what Harvard has going for it next season and where he will likely play this season. Something does not add up.
4). Michalek sings 2 year deal with Minnesota

Harvard gets a recruit out of Victory Honda. A forward, Jon Russell, who had a strong showing at the Select 17 camp. He will arrive in Cambridge for the 2017 season and I imagine he will play at least 1 season in the USHL (Des Moines).

I don't put much stock in preseason polls and our D won't be as good as last year. And we don't know about the goaltending.
