Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Didn't he also coach at Harvard?

Yes, he was an assistant coach under Mazzoleni from '99 to '03 or '04. He left to take over Union and then to Providence. Actually both Rick Bennett and Leaman had a hand in helping the other win a national title. Bennett laid the groundwork for Nate to build on for this championship much as Nate did for Bennett at Union.

Some updates on Harvard players in the NHL:

1. Dom Moore '03 and the Rangers advanced beating Pittsburgh last night. Dom assisted on Carl Hagelin's winner in OT. Moore was outstanding on the forecheck and on face-offs. Wish he was with the Bruins. Mazz was so wrong about Moore it isn't funny. Craig Adams '99 missed this series due to injury for the Pens.

2. Alex Killorn '12 and the Lightening are in a 2-2 deadlock with the Red Wings. Alex has played well and scored in game two of the series. Hoping that the Bolts advance - would love to see Ottawa come back and beat Montreal.

3. Alex Biega '10 is playing with Vancouver but the Canucks are facing elimination tonight against the Flames. Been a rough series so far - I've been to a Vancouver-Calgary game in BC and I can tell you first hand, there is a palpable dislike between the two franchises. You can feel it in the stands.

I don't think we have any other players involved in a playoff series but if I missed someone, please update.

Mazz was wrong on many Harvard players of that era. Some could do no wrong, others were in the doghouse no matter what! Dom Moore is an example of a great team player and a class act. If not for Leaman and Rolston there would have been a revolt at H back then. Glad to see H have success this year!

There was a revolt. Prior to the '02 playoffs. the team got together sans Mazz and the other coaches and decided to abandon his system and play the game their way. Result? They won the ECAC tournament beating Cornell in OT. His style of coaching and lack of leadership were two reasons the team underachieved during his tenure. All you had to do was look at the faces of the seniors in '03 during Senior Night at the introductions after the game to see how much they hated him. He never connected with the Harvard community, admissions or anyone else inside the administration.

Nate and Ron Rolston were primarily the reasons that Harvard did anything of significance during those years. Mazz managed to drive both of them away. He and Rolston were seen arguing vociferously after one game outside the locker room. Not everyone is going to fall in love with a coach (except maybe Billy C) but Mazz made more enemies than friends during his stay at Harvard. I'm not surprised he isn't coaching now.

st norbets ast for a reason

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Couldn't agree more. Mazz tried to make highly skilled players into goons. He never let them play to their strengths. A bad hire by H and a bad fit for the players recruited to H.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

This remark is based upon second (or third) hand information, but didn't Brian Flynn, from Canton, have an especially difficult time of it with Mazz? Again, strictly rumor.

Real nice commitment for Harvard, picking up Proctor '99 D Reilly Walsh. Coach's son, his dad played at Colgate. I have him ranked #1 for USHL Futures Draft among NE kids playing prep and high school

In reviewing the list, there appear to be several uncommitted players who look like they have good upside. Wonder how many are considering Harvard.

Here are some updates regarding Harvard grads in the NHL while waiting to see if McNally, Everson and Michalek get one more year:

Don Sweeney named GM of the Bruins:

I hope Don has more success than Chiarelli - specifically, that he doesn't become enamored with tying up under performers to long term deals. He has a big job ahead of him to restore the Bruins to Cup contender status.

Dom Moore and Alex Killorn continue their solid play for their respective teams. Dom won game 1 for the Rangers on Saturday with a little more than two minutes to play. Alex scored twice on Monday to help Tampa even their series. Good for both of them. Looks like it will be a fun series to follow.
