Harvard Crimson 2014-15

Some interesting numbers on the Crimson forwards once January rolled around:

Heffernan - Laing - Parker 28-32-60 2.6
D'Oench - Reber - Crowe 31-42-73 2.52
Daniels - Armstrong - Fry 22-26-48 2.09

The consistency is pretty remarkable and I think it points to everyone getting a chance to get meaningful minutes.

And not to beat a dead horse but as I was lambasted for suggesting that Syd Daniels was an egregious omission from the ECAC second and third team selections, of her 18 goals, 7 were game winners making her margin the second highest in the nation. Repeat, IN THE NATION. But yeah, I guess that still doesn't qualify her for a second or third team slot. Because heaven forbid we should actually watch the games and have an opinion.

Heaven forbid get over it. All the women chosen were deserving and in "THE VOTERS OPINION" more deserving than Daniels.

And congrats to Emerance Maschmeyer for being named to the Canadian Womens National team.

And good luck to Harvard against Quinny. I think Harvard has a great chance of taking the NC$$ title this year.

That's the problem in trying to select any All-Something team -- for every person you want to add, you have to remove somebody else. Fans of a given team watch their players all the time and say, "How can you leave her off?!!!" The reason is because in the selector's opinion, somebody else was better or more deserving or whatever factors weighed. I can find some statistical reason why at least a dozen players omitted should have been on an all-conference or All-American team, but unless you've ever picked such a team for real, it's a lot harder to be fair to everyone than you'd think.

Congratulations to all those honored and even those worthy of consideration. There are more terrific players than spots, year after year.

I get that and hey, Lindsey Allen and Laura Stacey fans could make arguments for those players as well. And probably a half dozen others. I'm just saying that after watching her play improve so much this season, I was really disappointed in the voters to not put her on one of those two teams. I don't know how you can overlook someone who improved at both ends of the ice while playing a tough, physical brand of hockey that has become more prevalent in women's hockey. Not that I'm in favor of that style but it is what it is.

I am. And I picked Clarkson to upset BC today at Conte. It should be a whale of a game.

Our Achilles' heel if we make it to the Frozen Four is not having played the WCHA this season. Or for the past few seasons. I think that hurts us a bit although with our talent and depth, we should give anyone a run for their money.

I'd be less worried about that angle myself. You can beat BC you can beat anyone.

A great way to say goodbye to Bright-Landry this afternoon with as complete a win as Harvard as had all season. Their first period was their best this season. They gave the Bobcats nothing and kept the heat on the entire period.

Unlike the first three games between these teams, Harvard made sure it was going to dictate the game by scoring first. Abbey Frazier slammed home a rebound off a point shot by Brianna Mastel. The Crimson continued to pressure and got their second goal off a beautiful feed from Karly Heffernen (drop pass between her skates) to Haley Mullins who wristed a beauty top shelf.

The next two periods featured a lot of back and forth and neutral zone play. Quinnipiac submitted their most sustained pressure after Sam Reber took a Marissa Gedman shot off the boards and backhanded a shot across the crease that went between Laden's pads. The Bobcats kept four players in the Harvard zone and had a few chances in close. Maschmeyer kept everything in front of her.

In the third, the Bobcats finally wilted after Syd Daniels rammed home a feed from Abbey Frazier out in front of Rossman. Karly Heffernan finished it off with a beautiful curl out front and a snap shot top shelf. After that, it was all about counting it down.

Seeley pulled Laden after Reber's goal but I can't really fault her. Harvard's first two goals were off very good looks in close and they were both great shots. You could fault her on the third but by that point, the game was getting away from the Bobcats and it really didn't matter much.

Tip of the cap to the crowd and both bands for being loud and boisterous. Really electric atmosphere.

On to Minneapolis and a date with BC. Should be fun!

What a spectacular way to end the season at Bright! It was not so much an athletic contest as a coronation.

How the Crimson were able to score five times against a defense that had held them to 4 goals in 3 full regulation games is astounding.

The Harvard players came out with ferocious speed from the outset and you could see the QU breakout looking completely tentative.

The coach took ECAC second-team allstar Mary Parker off the third line, and the third line produced three goals tonight, two of them in the first 10 minutes.

I was looking up at the banners and they've got a lot of new stitching to do: Beanpot, ECAC co-champs, ECAC tourney and Frozen Four banners......it's been a long time coming, but it's here!

Not only that but the third line was composed entirely of freshmen. Shows a lot of faith on Coach Stone's part to have them skate meaningful minutes.

What we did today that we haven't done consistently this season is finish. Our first two goals came off setups or rebounds where our players were facing the net and fired right away. No hesitation. Once we got up on the Bobcats, they were forced out of their game plan of defense first and given they lack offensive skill, it made it that much harder to come back.

Already the BC-Harvard semi thread is bashing the Crimson. It would be really sweet to knock off BC.

I for one was shocked when Sealy pulled Laden after the third goal. What does it say to his team? And I felt it was a real slap in the face for a senior who had a great year and finished her NCAA career with being pulled. How awful. Why not put her back in after the forth goal and finish the year. Makes the player look like just a commodity or asset and not a person. I felt real bad for her and hope she is ok!

She had a great year, with great stas, and helped her team get to the tournament for their first time ever. I'm glad Clarkson doesn't have to deal with him anymore!!!!

I think a lot of people were surprised and truthfully, I felt that only one of the goals could be attributed to her failing to make the stop. Reber's goal was a backhander that slid across and under her pads. She has proven to be one of the top goalies in women's hockey and you're right, as a senior, she deserved to skate off with her teammates. It was a panic move by a coach who by that time knew his team was in deep trouble.

I don't follow their team but I have noticed before from their box scores that he pulls goalies liberally.

Some left over thoughts while still basking in the afterglow of a great afternoon of hockey at Bright-Landry

1. In the post game interview, Katey Stone mentioned that after the previous three encounters with the Bobcats, she decided to switch up some of Harvard's breakouts. The Crimson often go up the boards as opposed to the middle of the ice but that plays into the Bobcats defensive strategy so Harvard worked on moving towards the middle of the ice to draw the Quinny D away from the boards giving Harvard's wingers more room. In the first period, it worked perfectly and we scored twice as a result.

2. In his Sunday notes column in the Boston Globe, Fluto Shinzawa posited that coaches are now pulling goalies earlier in the third period following Patrick Roy's model in Colorado. Fluto wondered why teams that fall behind don't try that tactic in the second period when they get a power play. Thinking back to yesterday's game, I'm now wondering the same thing. The Bobcats don't score a lot of goals and had fallen behind 3-0 in a one and done game. They were putting pressure on the Crimson in the latter half of the second period when they got a late PP. Why not pull Rossman at that point and go for it? If Harvard scores, so be it. You're behind 3-0, your team is offensively challenged and there is no tomorrow if you lose. Seeley played it too conservatively and wound up losing big.

3. Quinnipiac makes you earn every inch of free ice. They make you work until your sticks turn to sawdust to score goals. Credit to their system which suffocates you in the neutral zone and plays high up on the points and in front of Laden. It's really tough to find space against them and that makes Harvard's final tally yesterday all the more impressive.

4. Had a chance to talk to Karly Heffernan's dad during yesterday's game. He coached Karly when she was younger along with one of the Bobcat players and it was interesting to get his take during the game. He went back and forth watching the game as a dad and a coach. His insights on how women approach the game in different situations was eye opening.

5. You could see the NCAA's effect on the women's tournament at Bright-Landry. All Harvard signage was taken down along the boards and the video board only showed NCAA student athletes from different schools. We couldn't get the video feed for the men's b-ball game which was disappointing. If the NCAA really wants to create a neutral site feeling, why not set up neutral sites and be done with it? Oh right, money and travel. Can't being doing that or the checkbook overlord will strike back!

In terms of that cliché, "peaking at the right time," you may want to note that the team has scored 11 goals in the last four periods and hasn't given up an even strength goal in almost 3 games (176 minutes 23 seconds of play).

BU did that in their second-last regular season game against BC at Conte. Didn't work for them but that doesn't mean it wasn't worth trying.
