Harvard Crimson 2014-15

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

PS to ONMAA:
it always seems people out east are snobs in that they overlook what lies between the coasts, you for example, didn't mention U of Alberta, a very fine school for engineering

Has nothing to do with snubbing, more to do with familiarity and hiring practices with firms here in the east that I'm familiar with. Firms around here hire mainly out of the schools I mentioned before. UBC (School in Vancouver one of my daughters is attending) has a very esteemed engineering program as well, but companies around here typically don't actively recruit out west so those schools do not tend to be on the radar screen around here.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

isn't it kind of a slap in the face to the Harvard players to say this? It sounds like you are saying this is the best we could get, if our academic standards were lower, we'd get better players.

looking at many of the top players in the WCHA (I'm not familiar enough with eastern teams) they are also top students

are you saying they aren't smart enough?

I think the real problem is that you are the one lacking in smarts

Look, you want to twist my words to make differing points, knock yourself out. Let me know where Marie Philip Poulin really wanted to go and if she got in there. Actually don't bother because I can't see stuff on my ignore list.

LOL

no need to twist your words, you said it right there

I don't think he is saying they aren't smart enough. But it is simply naive to think that Harvard and a few of the Ivies aren't at a disadvantage when it comes to recruiting top players. The AI forces Harvard coaches to recruit from a pool that excludes a number of players that are on the radar of coaches at Minnesota, Wisconsin, BU and BC. That's just a fact and that comes from the mouths of Harvard coaches that I have spoken to face to face.

I'm not saying that the players that go to Minnesota or Wisconsin aren't smart. What I am saying is that Harvard has to adhere to the AI, like it or not. It isn't going away anytime soon. And yes, if we had less rigorous standards, we could compete for more players. But admissions isn't going down that road. And it isn't a slap in the face to current Harvard players. They worked hard to get in and understand the playing field. They value what a Harvard education can bring them in the future. Especially where there are no pro leagues to make the kind of living that NHL players currently enjoy.

So now you are saying Poulin was too stupid to play for Harvard?

Poulin was -1 in both of the games she played against the Gophers over the past 3 years, so I'm not sure it would be a good idea to say that if you had her her on the team, you'd have won. Earlier this year her line was held scoreless by the Gopher defense which contains 3 All-Americans.

would you like some brie with that whine?
