Harvard Crimson 2014-15

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

And it doesn't get easier because we face Cornell in Ithaca on Friday.
Having watched both Cornell and BC play, I'm going to disagree and say that it does in fact get easier. Your kids may be more tired and less fired up for the game, but there is no way Cornell is anywhere close to as deep as the Eagles are.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

Most of the Harvard fans would have been handcuffed together on the expressway protesting some wrong with the world.

Actually, you nailed me myself on that one.....technically at least....but let me explain!

Fifty years ago, before political student protests entered into our world and protesters imperiled the access of emergency vehicles, undergraduate "riots" occasionally took place late on a warm spring evening. It was a far more innocent phenomenon. Hundreds of students wearing Bermuda shorts stood around smiling. Beer had no doubt entered some bellies and made some people lightheaded. One preferred place for "riots" was down by the Larz Anderson Bridge (as far as I know, the only bridge in the world named for a Red Sox phenom who didn't pan out, but I digress). This was because yard cops, proctors and baby deans had authority only on University property, the MDC police only on Mem Drive and the embankment, and Cambridge police only on the sidewalks and other city land. If pursued by someone in authority and told to go back to your House, you could skip their jurisdiction by taking a few steps onto safe ground.

I was too young to participate in the tongue-in-cheek 1961 "toga riot" which purported to protest the substitution of English for Latin on undergraduate diplomas. You can imagine what people wore to that one. But I was present at the 1964 "observe the jaywalking laws riot" that followed the erection of pedestrian lights at the corner of Mass Ave and Holyoke Street. This innovation, though not as astonishing as the hula hoop, was still a wonder of technology that nobody had ever seen, or imagined, in 1964. It came straight from Tomorrowland. So, in observance of the lights' instructions, the students assembled on the adjacent sidewalks first began to chant "Walk Walk Walk" and entered the crosswalk, then chanted "Don't Walk Don't Walk" and stood stockstill in the crosswalk, smiling at their cleverness. Traffic was disrupted for three minutes before the joke grew stale and the students moved on.

So, I have actually taken part in a student demonstration that blocked traffic....how innocent we would-be New Frontiersmen seem today....little did we know that only five years later demonstrators would be marching through the Square smashing windows....and the events of last month out on I-93 remind me that we will never go back to the days when the phrase "student riot" would evoke chuckles at lighthearted shenanigans.

You can't heat an arena when you need to leave the Zamboni room door open to freeze the flood of water left AFTER a resurfacing...because no one read the ice resurfacing manual and the staff seems not to have heard of squeegies.

Once upon a time (I would say the good old days but that would make me sound old) Harvard had a full time rink manager, Jack Kirrane who ran the Zamboni himself. It always seemed a bit like Harvard overkill that Jack the Zamboni driver was an Olympic gold medalist. (1960, Squaw Valley games). Harvard has now outsourced to contractors much that was previously done by Harvard employees. At one time the rink maintenance was being done by Cambridge Landscape Co, not entirely sure if that is still the case. It might be. Having staff raking leaves and cutting grass one day and surfacing ice the next might be a factor.

Harvards win makes it on ESPN Wed Sports Center. Again congrats to the Crimson.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

If BC was going to score first then I think they did Harvard a real favor by doing it at 01:35 of the first period. What could have stunned Harvard seemed to jolt them instead. No visions of November 28th in their head, just the need to answer sooner rather than later. Simply put, it was their turn to score. ("We can do this.") You could really sense this attitude in their play after they answered BC's second period goal within 2 minutes. In this context, as the game progressed I think the TV commercial breaks could have played an important role. Nobody's momentum was affected, since both were at full bore for 60 minutes, and both teams could exhale regularly, but Harvard could exhale, then pinch themselves. ("We ARE doing this!") The confidence factor was huge.

As for the goals at both ends, time and gifs will tell soft from medium to hard, but Maschmeyer put her Conte starts well behind her in that third period. MVP for sure.

An amazing game! Fluid, poised, powerful vs. fast, scrappy, resourceful. No one who was there could think the Beanpot would benefit from a move next year to a commercial cavern in the North End in order to reap some bogus "exposure" payoff for women's hockey. You might get some social buzz, but you couldn't begin to approach the electricity of last night.

Omg it took the winch guy 3 hours to get here. I was lucky I was home!

And yeah reliving this made me sad, driven, but it reminded me of what a thriller it was!

Here is my game recap & GIFs, for those of you who don't frequent BC's thread:

http://www.bcinterruption.com/bosto...lls-in-beanpot-for-first-loss-harvard-crimson

Thanks, those are interesting. It is difficult because the gifs are naturally jumpy but it appears there was an check thrown on that call but it might not even been called had the Harvard player not hit the boards. not seeing it in real time it's tough but it looks like 2 to me. Was there a loud thump when se hit the boards? Refs occationally call based on sound as much as event.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

Yeah there was a pretty good thud. I was saying the same thing yesterday that I think if it was at center ice and she just went flying that it might not have been whistled at all.

EDIT: Having said that I was always firmly of the opinion that it was a clear 2 for checking, partially because, well, she WASN'T in open ice.

If you ask "why were 2 of Harvard's 3 goals in the Beanpot final, and 5 of its 6 assists, produced by the third line, on a Katey Stone-coached team," the answer has to do with last year's question "why are you skating only 8 forwards in an NCAA quarterfinal game?"

No question the presence on the first line of Fry and Armstrong from the Class of '14 who missed last year has meant that 2 other forwards who would otherwise have had to be Top Sixers this year are now on the third line, and it has been of immense value. Over the season, they are tied with the second liners in most goals scored by a Harvard line. And have I previously mentioned that our fourth liners outscored the entire Boston University team, 3-2? Maybe I have...more than once...but it's fun doing so. (And this degree of depth will probably never happen again, so enjoy it while we can!)

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

The Harvard news feed reports that Josephine Pucci blocked 9 shots in the third period of the BC game...can that possibly be true?

I would believe it. I watched the game and in that period I heard the announcers call her name numerous times for blocking shots. Pucci and Machemayers play in period 3 were a HUUUUUUUUUGE reason why Harvard won that game.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

If you want to individually block 9 shots in one period, guess you'd better be playing an outlier offense like BC's. Don't get that chance very often in a career.

I really believe that Harvard's lines are totally interchangeable this year. It allows Katey to parcel out minutes to everyone including the fourth line. I would also add that Pucci's re-emergence this season is huge both offensively and defensively. Enables us to play Edney and Picard on second or third pairings that make it tougher on the opposition's forwards. The depth has started to show itself at the perfect time.

As Miye D'Oench said on the post game interview: "we are in the best shape of our lives".

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

To which legendary Harvard football coach Percy Haughten would respond, "you'd better be, because nothing you have done or will do in your lives is as important as today's game." And then he would strangle a bulldog with his bare hands.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

Great win by the girls tonight. Always tough to win in Ithaca. Looks like we had the better of the play from the shot totals. Love the fact that different players are scoring every night.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

Watched the game via the Colgate feed (They need some help with their video crew. One quarter of the rink was unwatchable due to very poor camera angles). Harvard really took it to the Raiders and looked to be firing on all cylinders. One note of caution; Kalley Armstrong didn't dress after playing Friday night against Cornell. I didn't see Friday's game so I'm not sure if she was hurt during the game. My immediate thought went to her concussion history and I really hope I'm wrong there. Crossing my fingers.
