Harvard Crimson 2014-15

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

I think (but am not 100% sure) that this is only true for the semifinals and consolation game.

Would they determine the semi-final winner via a shootout (ugh!)? How about melding the two teams into an all-star squad to advance to the finals?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

Then I invoke Title IX! We can't let the men go into double OT with BU (making BC and NU freeze their bippies off while waiting) but not the women! (LOL)

My memories of the legendary triple OT against BC are doubly unforgettable: first because of the painful result and second because the gate at the Conte Forum parking lot was temporarily stuck shut at one in the morning!
I was stuck behind said gate as well.

I was the guy with the trumpet in the balcony. That was my freshman year -- I'm getting old.

My memories of that game center on my not having any voice whatsoever for a week after that game, the massive headache I had from constantly yelling, and the BC pile in the corner after the goal

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

I think the Beanpot games these days are capped at 5 minutes of OT like every other regular-season game.

I remember attending the last Beanpot at Bright-Landry ('09-'10 season) and sitting with Joe Bertagna, commish of HE. The first game went to OT (between BU and Northeastern) and then if I'm not mistaken, a shootout. I asked Joe if HE had adopted shootouts to decide games after a scoreless OT. I think he said 'No' and that they were using the shootout to prevent multiple OT games in the first round.

I'm not a fan of shootouts even if they are dramatic like the US men vs the Soviets in 2014 in Sochi. Just feel like it should be decided on the ice.

Ha - I remember a massive headache after that game too, but it was directly related to your not having any voice for a week:p

I was calling the Harvard-BC game after and I can confirm that the semis between BU/Northeastern that year did go to a shootout that Northeastern won. I think it was the 1st year the rule had been changed so of course the game went to a shootout.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

As Harvard - Yale games go, this was a definite departure from the norm. The Crimson pressed the Eli all night with a relentless forecheck and transition game that had Yale gassed by the third period. Even though Yale was able to stay with Harvard for at least the first half of the game.

Miye D'Oench got Harvard on the board early with a PP goal, the beneficiary of some nice passing by Mary Parker and Sam Reber from behind the net. The score remained 1-0 until Lyndsey Fry got a bit of a gift when her wrist shot from inside the left face-off circle went off two Yale skaters and behind Leonoff.

The teams traded scoring opportunities in the second with Harvard striking first on a beautiful rush by Sarah Edney and a backhander that Leonoff should have stopped. Yale got that one back on a PP with Ferrara tipping a shot by Brianna Liang. Harvard responded with two more by Lyndsey Fry to complete the hat trick, both goals coming from hard work out front off a persistent forecheck by Fry's linemates. This is when Yale waved the white flag putting in their backup goalie to start the third. Miye D'Oench got her second of the night, again out in front depositing another gift when Yale's goalie let a puck that she should have tied up slip from her glove right to D'Oench who had a wide open net.

Not a great night by Leonoff but she didn't really have a lot of help out front in the second period. Harvard gave the Eli way too much space and time to maneuver in the first period but did a better job as the game went along of transitioning the puck from back to front. Yale has more speed than last year but not a lot of front end talent other than Stanz who was a buzz saw all night. The Crimson did a good job to contain her.

With apologies to Coach Belichick, we're on to Brown.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

For those of you keeping score at home....who'da thunkit that the scoring by the three lines would be this even: in the 23 games, 23 goals by first liners, 25 by second liners and 21 by third liners. That has to be a record for a Katey Stone third line. True, the fourth liners have only 6 goals, but then again 3 of them were in one game against Boston University.

(Can I encrypt this post so that nobody can repost (reposte?) with BC's scoring totals? (Ouch!) I merely want to make a point about the parity in scoring among lines. And maybe get in a little nudge after the whistle vis-a-vis BU?)

Very true Watson. This is probably the first time in her tenure that Katey Stone has had such scoring balance. There really is no true first line. Witness last night. We started Sam Reber's line against Yale's first line. We could have gone with the other two lines just as easily. Heck, we could have put out our fourth line to start the game and it wouldn't have mattered. As it was, they almost scored (Dani K missed a wide open net with the goalie way out of position) in the third period.

Fun facts from last night:

1. Miye D'Oench scored for the first time in over a month. Think about it. She goes without a goal for a month and Harvard is in first place. That's depth.

2. Brianna Mastel and Phoebe Stanz went to the same high school and are good friends. Stanz apparently got zero offers coming over from Switzerland so she went to Choate and Yale eventually accepted her. Too bad she couldn't have come to Cambridge with Brianna as a package deal. She is a dynamo.

3. Speaking of Stanz, she set a great example of what it means to be a world class hockey player. With 7 seconds to go in the game and the outcome never in doubt, she raced down the ice to try and prevent an icing call off a face-off in her D zone. That kind of hustle and play to the final whistle is what separates a good from a great player. Tremendous.

4. Maschmeyer didn't dress last night. I'm wondering if she has some sort of illness where Katey wanted to separate her from the team with an eye towards the Beanpot final on Tuesday. We don't need her today so it would make sense for her to get her rest. Two big games back to back next week - BC and then Cornell in Ithaca. No rest for the weary.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

Pretty straightforward game today. Even with the score 2-1 after one, there was no doubt as to who was going to win. The Crimson dominated from start to finish. Probably the only moment of concern came in the second period when the refs decided to intercede and hit Harvard with two penalties including a ludicrous 5 minute major to Haley Mullins. The Crimson killed off both with little offense from Brown and then decided to take out their wrath on the Lady Bears with three goals in a matter of a few minutes. Miye D'Oench got things going on the power play with a nice redirect from the slot of a wrist shot from Sarah Edney. Then the third line got going again with Mary Parker taking a nice feed from Karly Heffernan and snapping a wrister over the shoulder of Landry. Parker finished off her hat trick by coming out from the boards and firing a wrist shot stick side for a 6-1 lead. That was all she wrote.

The third period was nothing more than an extended power play with Karly Heffernan getting her second goal on a tip in of a Jo Pucci drive from the point. Harvard could have easily had nine or ten goals in this game. It was that one sided.

Brown simply doesn't have the talent or speed to stay with elite teams. They try but you can see the frustration and hopelessness on their faces trying to just get the puck out of their zone. Their only goal came off miscommunication from Harvard and a poor angle by Liang in trying to stop the shot. It was her only gaffe of the game.

On to BC. Hopefully, we'll have a great crowd for the game. And no snow!

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

Five goals from the third line today, so the line-by-line scoring totals now read first line 23, second line 27, third line 26.

Perhaps there's a Soderberg-Ericksson-Kelley Effect for the third line?

The fourth line still has only 6 goals. But 3 of them are still against #6/7 Boston University.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-15

Any word on whether or not tomorrow's Beanpot final is on? There was a lot of snow around Bright-Landry this weekend - clearing space for parking will be a challenge. I know the men are rescheduled for the 23rd.

I really really doubt anything changes. I would imagine it's game on.
