Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014
Since Dutchman picked up on my post from the RPI-Harvard game thread, I guess I'll lead with that in my take on tonight's game.
Similar to the November game in Troy, RPI came out strong and and took it to the Crimson especially over the last ten minutes of the first period. Harvard got on the board first when Luke Esposito intercepted a weak clearing attempt by the RPI D at their blue line, skated in and roofed a backhand shot over Kasdorf. Beautiful goal. Unfortunately, that was the extent of Harvard's offense for the period. RPI would later score off a face-off with Melanson getting the goal. Their second goal came off a giveaway by Patrick McNally near the top of the face-off circle. Harvard had several egregious giveaways tonight and wasn't all that sharp in their zone.
Things heated up early in the second period when, off a face-off in the RPI zone, Jimmy Vesey took a cheap shot to the head, was slow to get up but when he did, found the puck on his stick and whistled a wrist shot past Kasdorf. Then the fun started before the face-off at center ice as several Harvard players including Patrick McNally and Kevin Guiltanan got into it with the RPI players. After the face-off, the puck was sent deep into the Harvard zone whereupon Guiltanan crushed an RPI player along the boards and got a boarding call. More importantly, RPI woke the slumbering beast because after that, the Crimson started to move their feet and took over the game. In a matter of minutes, Phil Zielonka and Tyler Moy scored off beautiful rushes that ended with Zielonka jamming the puck home from the crease and Moy wristing one with Kasdorf helplessly out of position off the left post. It was all Harvard after that with the exception of some alert puck possession by RPI in the Harvard zone towards the end of the game.
Perhaps the goal of the game was the last one by Seb Lloyd - it started with a pass from Max Everson at the Harvard blue line to Jake Horton, who tipped it to Sean Malone who skated in with Lloyd on a two on one, deftly held the puck until the last minute when he slipped it over to Lloyd who roofed a forehand by Kasdorf. Bright Landry went crazy. We have waited so long for this type of skill and man, it is SO MUCH FUN to watch!!
I have to say that Sean Malone is so impressive as a player. He stickhandles much the same as Stevie Martins, passes the puck like Peter Ciavaglia and shoots like, well, take your pick (CJ Young, Lane MacDonald, Teddy, Mike Vukonich, Tyler Kolarik or Tim Petit). He should have had one or two goals tonight.
And how about the crowd tonight? Two thirds full at least - maybe more. For a week night game between Christmas and New Years? Yeah, it's safe to say that word is out that we are a terrific team to watch.
Got a chance to catch up with Chuckie Hughes and Coach Tim Murphy. Coach is so humble in the way he talked about the season and the team. Chuckie was very helpful to a friend of mine whose son is a hockey player and it is always great to talk hockey with him. His daughters play and I asked them if they want to play for Harvard. Resounding 'YES'! Oh those bloodlines.
Kerfoot and Blackwell didn't dress and I'm thinking the additional time off might be good for them. For the team, not so much. They need to clean some things up, especially defensively. Michalek saw too much rubber tonight. And from in close.
