Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Since beating Cornell in November, the Crimson have three goals in four games. Not the way to head into January. The ugly truth:

Colgate 2 Harvard 0
Merrimack 2 Harvard 2
UML 5 Harvard 0
Northeastern 5 Harvard 1

The team needs something major to happen and fast. The cheating scandal obviously hurts but that doesn't explain the goal shortage.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Why did Harvard dress only 10 forwards?

It was actually 11 in the box score but Fallstrom did not play. He dressed but had tweaked something during practice so they decided to hold him out. Criscuolo and Placek appear to have been the other players out but don't know why. Vesey is obviously in Ufa. And that's the 14 forwards on this team.

Edit: Per Jacko, Kyle is out 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. http://bostonherald.com/sports/college/2012/12/ferriero_powers_nu_past_harvard

From what I've heard, the disciplinary process has been done for a couple weeks now, so no more players should be leaving that we don't know of already.

It seems that this team has had the wind taken out of their sails. No other way to explain it. Not only do you lose impact players in the gov scandal, you also lose bodies, players who might not be regulars in the lineup but are still important to have. On top of that, you lose teammates. 4 of 5 guys gone is a big chunk in the locker room, and their personalities are missed too, regardless of how crucial they are on the ice.

As for offense, I can't think of an excuse really. This team has talent. Fallstrom, Greiner, Everson, Morrisson in the senior class alone should be leading the way offensively. Add in some of the sophomores like O'Regan or Blackwell (injured for a while, but back now), and then Vesey (gone but will be back soon) and a couple other freshmen who can chip in if needed, this team cannot use personnel as an excuse for lack of offense.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

I saw that Vesey scored a goal in the World Junior's against Canada in USA's 5-1 victory. Now on to the gold medal round.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

It was a disaster. H played like it was a man down for 50 minutes. No speed, no hitting, nothing. Admit that I was watching on a TV feed but... If we finish over 500 over the rest of the season I will be surprised

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

A disaster. H looked looked like they were a man down for 50 minutes. Slow, no ideas, now hitting. If we go close to 50% going forward I will be surprised.

BTW Calof, 3 goals, had a LOI to Harvard, was turned down and signed with Princeton THAT SAME day...

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

I was at Hobey Baker and H60 is right for the 1st period...bit of a disaster and we could not clear the puck. 2nd period was even, 3rd period was close to even but favoring Princeton. Should note by even I mean less play in our own zone but that meant more neutral zone play. We had trouble establishing in their zone and our goals were off the rush and then a rugby scrum on the PP.

Should be noted Harvard had two big hits today, 1 in the 1st (Rempel) and 1 in the 3rd (not sure).

Also should be noted that technically, Harvard was down a man the whole game...they only skated 5 defensemen with Caldwell acting as the 12th forward.

Really tough game again tomorrow against Quinnipiac. That said, have to appreciate the fight back from 0-2 down tonight and admit that Princeton's winner was an unfortunate bounce off Biega's skate in OT. If we have that kind of spirit we'll do better than .500 the rest of the way. (Will help to get back Vesey soon too.)

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

It would be nice if this slate got any easier any time soon but alas the road slog continues.

Hopefully Vesey's return gets this team going.

Vesey's return isn't going to make much of a difference unfortunately. This team has morphed into a bottom feeder. For some reason, from back to front, the team isn't playing cohesively and is consistently beaten on and off the puck. The Bobcats skated us out of their building. We offered zero resistance.

I'm not sure what the cure is at this point. Better talent? Better coaching? More urgency and grit? Better forecheck? Take your pick.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

I think the cheating scandal has really disrupted the team on many levels. Chemistry, guys playing that weren't expected to, etc.

I think the depth (lack of) of Harvard has been exposed and while I hope for a turn-around, I don't see this season turning out like I expected it to before the drop of the first puck.

On another note, how does Donato manage the next few recruiting classes now that folks are all going to stay a year lonmger than anticiated (or does this year not count against their eligibility?)

That's the million dollar question. Without actually knowing, my guess is only Luzar and Michalek (and missing since the beginning of the season for whatever reason, Valek) will maintain this year's eligibility because they did not play this season. Unless there's some sort of waiver process or something for Max and Pat.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Well then...didn't watch most of the game. Got home for work down 1-0 and needed to do work after down 2-0. Followed a little on twitter and then caught the OT. What a comeback. Reminds me of last year's UNH game. Hopefully with the same results. Actually, scratch that, more wins and less ties :D.

It's nice having 2 full scoring lines and a full complement of players.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Fun game to watch. Lots of up and down hockey and what I loved about this game (besides the outcome) was that Harvard really took it to BU from a skating perspective which is how Harvard needs to play to win.

Quick thoughts:
1) Harvard has some young forwards that can play. Vesey is going to be a star, though I see him staying 3yrs tops. Blackwell doesn't have Vesey's ceiling, but he brings a ton of energy, competes his butt off, and is fearless. I'd want him on my team every time. Hart shows flashes of brilliance and clearly, he has NHL finish (what a shot!), but I think he could have used an extra year in JRs.
2) Harvard's defense is a mess. They really miss Everson & McNally. Several of BU goals resulted from Harvard not taking the body and allowing BU drive to the net unabated...or allowing the BU forwards to hack away at the puck around Girard. Just unacceptable to allow the opposing forward to consistently park themselves in the danger zone like that.
3) Harvard really skated. They consistently outworked BU and seemed the fresher & more in shape of the 2 teams. It just seemed like Harvard wanted it more which is great to see.

I really hope that this solid win can turn this season around...it's certainly something to build off of.

Go Harvard!

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Kudos to a really impressive Harvard team. As a Brown fan I normally root against the Crimson, but in this case it was ECAC vs. HockeyEast and I was backing our league. Amazing third period and OT!

See you on the 19th.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Hello, folks:

A few happy Harvard thoughts (was at the NU game, missed the Princeton and Quinnipiac game, watched BU on DVR):

- The vibe watching the NU game was much different than it was for those involved. The guys on the Harvard staff realized the spot the team was in but seemed much less discouraged than one might expect. The loss of key forwards (Fallstrom, Criscuolo) to injury coincided with the loss of key defensemen who are gone for the year and Vesey's absence to make a difficult personnel circumstance in addition to the off-ice distraction. The coaches were pretty happy with the effort and felt like the team just ran out of gas.
- I was really impressed with Harvard's fight in the BU game, not just when down 5-2, but also when it was 1-0 and 3-0. That was a trademark of last season's team, and this year's team will need that comeback spirit on a macro level with what it has faced.
- Don't look now, but here come the seniors. I didn't see in what context Luke Greiner, Alex Fallstrom and Marshall Everson combined for a goal against Quinnipiac, but Teddy must have seen something because they were back together at BU and looked really good, especially Greiner. They teamed up for another goal, off an offensive draw, and Greiner had a hand in two power-play goals. That line needs to be the offensive engine for Harvard, and that OT goal might have been just what the doctor ordered for Conor Morrison.
- Other standouts at BU: the power play with two goals (though neither on a classic PP setup) for five PP goals in the last four games and Tommy O'Regan making plays like late last year (better actually).
- Three points out of the top four (five out of second, with two games in hand) with 14 league games left. The league is wide open, and a few points out of the upcoming games would go a long way.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Very sad that Dominick Moore's wife, Katie, passed away last week after battling cancer for several months. Memorial service today at St. Paul's on the Harvard campus.
