Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Heard that the East Coast Jumbos (autistic team) had a blast playing Harvard men and women on Sunday. Great job by the Crimson, just sorry I had a conflict.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

We're playing better of late so let's dream big...we end the Ingalls (and league) losing streak with a 4 point weekend over our fellow Ivies. Let's keep our NBCSN streak going!

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Ingalls has always been a house of horrors for the Crimson...even during the 80s run.

That said, Harvard is playing very well right now regardless of the tough loss to Dartmouth. This is a winnable game and a 4 point weekend is attainable.

Let's go Harvard!

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

That was an embarassing performance. I hope this was a one game thing, but if anyone watched HArvard for the first time tonight, they would have said the following:
1) What has happened to Danny Biega? Give aways, bad decision making, can't make a first pass out of the zone....
2) Harvard's defense is a bunch of tweeners. Meaning they can't make the first pass and move the puck effectively out of the zone and they don't intimidate. What does that mean? Anyone with a good forecheck is going to give Harvard fits. That BC game in February is going to be scary.
3) Harvard had zero chemistry in the offensive zone. It felt like it was 1 vs 3 all night. No puck movement, no cycle, ineffective powerplay...
4) Girard had zero help tonight, but he needs to hold his ground a bit more. He was flopping and diving much too often tonight. Donato should have pulled him much earlier in this game.

Overall, let's hope this was an anomaly because that was an awful performance on national television.

I recorded the game on my DVR as I was at Bright for the women's game. Guess I should probably erase it and free up space for something more rewarding?

I think Danny is trying too hard to make up for the loss of three defensemen, Max Everson, McNally and Bergin who was hurt in the Dartmouth game. He is pressing to make something happen to compensate for the loss of the three D. That never works and we're seeing the results. Plus teams know that if they pound on him, he'll wear down.

Harvard's D is a mess right now and it won't get any better going forward. We're in for a rough ride from here on in. I'm thinking we'll be lucky to finish in 10th place.

We really miss Alex Killorn. We have zero studs up front save for Vesey and he can't be expected to carry the load. Really disappointed in Fallstrom and Everson. They are huge busts. Overrated.

The team needs a talent infusion and better coaching. Something isn't getting through to these kids or perhaps they've tuned out Teddy and the staff. Whatever it is, something has to change because we've been mediocre for far too long.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

I was at the game and Harvard looked slow and tired, kept waiting for them to turn it on, and it never happened. I was wondering about Biega myself, the last three times I saw him against Yale he was a beast. You can't blame Girard, defense kept folding around him and the forecheck by Yale made them pay. Yale also hit three posts in the game before he was pulled.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

I agree that Biega is pressing due to the thin blueline and probably the expectations. Not to downgrade the other d on the team, but teams do know that Biega and Ford play most of the game and all the big minutes for Harvard, so they key on them, and despite Biega being a specimen, he wears down after a while. Also, losing Killorn has not helped the powerplay, so there goes many of Biega's points.

Fallstrom and Everson were hugely bolstered up last year by playing with Killorn. Very inflated numbers. I think tempering expectations for them is important, though even with that, they have been disappointing. Vesey is talented, but he is nowhere near where Killorn was last year, not by a mile. Maybe junior year he could be similar, and senior year surpass Killorn.

I didn't think we would miss any of the other seniors (not saying they weren't big parts of the team and dressing room last year, but I expected players to be able to step up), but it seems we are more than I thought. Grimshaw's stability on defense, and Kroshus on the second line helping create a consistent second line scoring threat, both seem to be missing this year. I would have like to see Greiner, Morison, Blackwell, etc etc step up and make the team even stronger, but for whatever reason, that isn't happening.

On a positive note, Tommy O'Regan seems to have made a very nice step up this year, it is a treat to watch him play.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

I feel badly for this team. I do. They have nothing on D.

But if yesterday's peformance at Yale was embarassing....this was of hereservation.

Does someon need to stick a fork in this team. Golf season already?

When I said they were headed for 10th place, I should have checked the standings before posting. More like dead last. I mean this is pathetic. Yeah, the D has been hit hard but what about the forwards? Doesn't anyone want to play hard anymore? Seems like they've quit on the season. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see anything that suggests otherwise. Even the win over BU is tempered by the fact that Northeastern did the same thing to the Terriers last night only in regulation. UGH!

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Harvard's lines for tonight's game with Union -

On offense: Vesey-Blackwell-Hart ... Mitchell Everson-Greiner-Fallstrom ... O'Reagan-McGregor-Morrison .... Gozzo-Seward-Placek

On defense: Ford-Biega... Caldwell-Rempel.... Gillmeister-Fick

In goal: Girard (backed up by Traber).

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

Do you really think that, at the beginning of the season, Donato envisioned his lineup looking this way? Injury, illness and plagarism have decimated this team. At the beginning of the season there was some question about whether or not a couple of the D would even make the roster and, tonight, they are in the starting lineup! Vesey is trying to carry the load by himself and is pressing. This was supposed to be "the year."

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

More on the game, including reaction from the Union side: http://unionhockeynews.blogspot.com/

It was my first time seeing Harvard and for the first 40 minutes of the game they were right there. Union pulled away in the third, but Harvard certainly put forth a good effort.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

I think that we all need to re-calibrate which is obviously difficult for fans of a program with such a storied history and such bright 2012-2013 prospects. Maybe there is a run in this team, may not....but we have to be realistic.

Harvard is playing folks on defense from the club team. I had to look up who J.P. Gillmeister was since he is not on the Harvard roster. Harvard has limited depth, particularly on defense, so if there are any injuries, this team has major problems.

I applaud the team for its ability to stay positive and continue to show up even though the current gaps are large and can be easily exploited by the competition. Losing is not fun and I hope despite this downtuen, the team continues to stick together.

This all said, it's absolutely amazing that Harvard was able to beat BU a few weeks back.

As an outsider I think it's a testament to the program that they didn't fold their tent when advesity struck. Even if they don't win another game, they're going to go out and give it their best shot. For all the anti-Donato talk over the past few seasons, I think he's doing the best he can with the hand he was dealt, as are the guys on the ice.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2012-2013

As if things aren't bad enough with the hockey team, I found out tonight from a reliable source close to the athletic department that two more hockey players may be asked to leave school as a result of the scandal. I don't know who they are but this may be more than the program can bear going forward. It would not surprise me if the team won only one or two games the rest of the way.
