Halloween Face-Off Lake Placid

Re: Halloween Face-Off Lake Placid

For the over 22 crowd :D, the Cabin at the Mirror Lake Inn has great views, great beer selection and good upscale pub grub. Just follow Main St. all the way to the end of the retails shops and the cabin is on your right, on the lakeshore...(sadly, this is NOT a paid endorsement...:p)

Im pretty sure I got into zig zags when I was 16....just saying.

Re: Halloween Face-Off Lake Placid

I'll be in attendance; I'm not sure what I'll be wearing though as most of my "red" gear was cursed last season at Freakout...

Re: Halloween Face-Off Lake Placid

There is some talk about a possible 2 day event. The announced attendance at the SLU/Clarkson game was 5500 (they were anticipating 5000 or so, and with the poor weather I'd say these are strong numbers) - The Union/RPI game seemed to have 2500/2750 or so by my guess - which is decent. Obviously hockey at Lake Placid is a great event, and doing something next year seems almost a shoo-in - and yes, there's buzz about making it an actual tournament in the future.

As far as the League Championship, AC has it for 3 years. The biggest barrier to it moving back to LP is the larger ice surface, which according to most every coach in the ECAC I've talked to about it, is something they dislike a great deal - They play most of their season on the NHL sized rink, so it seems silly to change the game so much by having their championship decided on the Olympic sized ice. But as they say, you never know.

I sure hope the bigger ice surface doesn't deter from the tournament winding up back here. This weekend was proof enough to me that everything that is "fun" about going to a hockey game exists in Lake Placid. For the life of me I can't imagine the tournament being in Atlantic City and having any fans in any numbers attending. SLU fans I have talked to doubt they would even travel if we were to make it to the tournament. I know TimU and I have an annual tradition of going to the Tournament whether SLU makes it or not and that tradition ends now that it moved to AC.
The town while a drive and remote, is perfectly proportioned for hosting our tournament. The arena while certainly not modern by today's standards is exactly the right size. The crowd of 5,500 made it fell pretty full and noisy.....you could walk to town and have a variety of choices and during the winter you have all the off ice activities you can participate in if you desire to be active (Skiing, etc) or bar hop for those so inclined.

Let the countdown start for the end of the tournament in Atlantic City.

Just add my name to the list who thought this was a great weekend of college hockey. I certainly hope that it becomes an annual event and expands into a tournament. I like the time of year - weather is not too much of a concern and plenty of affordable lodging.

Not that I ever had doubts - this is where the ECAC Championship belongs

Next year is already in the works..whether its one day or two is TBA. A good friend in the know told me this event is almost certain to move to early December...perhaps as soon as next year. They want to add UVM, rotate the NY teams, and if possible, add a western team as part of a tourney.

In a separate but remotely related point, the T/U's Mark McGuire was on Roger Wyland's show today and he floated his own idea for an annual event he nickname "Showdown Saturday" ...where RPI & Union would square off in football in the afternoon, then hockey in the evening...with the host site alternating annually. That sounds like a pretty good idea...anyone's guess if the AD's would consider it.

Re: Halloween Face-Off Lake Placid

Hi All - Hope your summer is going well. I just wanted to update everyone that we will be having this exact same event on Dec 10 of this year. Same format. I will post updates here.

I know I'm looking forward to this, and I hope many of the others are as well. Given football season will be pretty much over, hopefully you will have a better attendance from RPI and Union fans. Last year, they were playing each other in football at the same time, so that's why not as many showed up.

Re: Halloween Face-Off Lake Placid

Agreed, but I really dislike the scheduling on this year's event. They should've stuck with Halloween.

Re: Halloween Face-Off Lake Placid

Lake Placid has become a favorite for the NCAA Men's D-III Championship weekend. For the most part, it is on the same weekend as the Division I conference titles, so unless they move the D-III to the following weekend (like they did this past year), there is a good probability of a conflict.
