Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

From one athiest to another, why are you so insecure in your irreligious point of view that you feel the need to attack those beliefs and customs of religious people or just the religious people themselves?
Insecure? Is replying with a sarcastic tone to someone who is angry they and their group aren't being treated as a special and unique snowflake being insecure? This is after all a thread about things that grind your gears. People who feel persecuted because they don't get special treatment and equating it to actual persecution, grind my ****ing gears.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Yes, insecure. If it his/their religious devotion didn't bother you the comment would have slid by without comment from you. He wasn't asking for special treatment, IMO. Happy Channukah, Kwanza, all that, but Merry Christmas gets nixed. He doesn't like it. Why should you care? I certainly don't.

Who said anything about his personal religious devotion? It was his evangelical sentiments to force people to notice his religion and references to actual persecution that were the issue.

Really, the point I was trying to make is far less profound than all of the sturm und drang unleashed. Everyone understands what "holiday" we're referring to, especially with all of the secular references, so who are we kidding by refusing to utter its name (at least occasionally)? I'm not particularly religious, certainly not an evangelical. But who are we trying to impress by referring to "winter holiday break" as opposed to Christmas break? Is there anyone who doesn't understand from whence it derives? Does calling the Duke hooker an "exotic dancer" make her not a hooker? Primarily I was criticizing retailers who manage to cram as many secular references as possible in a 30 second spot, without actually speaking the dreaded word "Christmas." Strikes me as phony at best. Some of us are just predisposed to play CD's from our "Life Magazine Mean Spirited Ignorance Collection," at full volume, with little or no provocation. And I understand that.

Pio, you also have to recognize that the few people who get upset over "merry Christmas" is a distinct minority, and that MOST of the "Happy Holidays" are the marketeers who are trying to make a buck on EVERYBODY's winter solstace celebrations.

IMHO, Christmas lost most of it's true meaning when we made it such an important part of our annual economy. It's not supposed to be about buying stuff for other people- it's supposed to be the bookend to Easter, where you contenplate the gifts that God gave us, and the sacrifices that the Gift made for us.

Complaining that a group of the minority don't want to recognize the majortity's religious holiday in a secular country is ok to do, but it also takes away focus of the real meaning of Christmas. And is generally pointless.

Also- noting that we are supposed to be a secular country, I have no problem with any private or publicly owned company putting up any religious symbols that they wish to celebrate, but I do have a problem with any government agency who does- since they are supposed to represent all of us down to the single person and not take sides in a religous discussion.

But, if you want to get upset that other people think that thier personal religous celebration is more impiortant to THEM than yours is, well, that's your windmill to go after....

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Yes yes, we know it's YOUR holiday, what with being made up of traditions and celebrations that were stolen from everybody else and being on a day that has nothing to do with your supposed saviour.

Oh and could you be a bigger ******? Comparing people not wanting to hear about your religious nonsense to nazi's and racists. For ****s sake, get over your bloody persecution complex. You are not being wronged in anyway by not owning two months of the year for your religion.

Oh, just shut the **** up!
Shouldn't you be spending your time researching the most tranny-friendly doosh or something? Or maybe going through the pros and cons of chopping off another body part?
I'm not big on religion and even still, your views are the most annoying, most sickening that I've read on here. Either get a ****ing life or just jump in front of a truck.

One-coat paints. It never takes just one coat. It's almost one coat, but a light second coat is required even after a questionably too thick first coat.
Agreed! I have given up on them entirely and just plan on doing two coats with regular paint.

On, a side note, has anyone tried the paints with the primer built in?

What "minority" are you referring to? Unscientifically, it seems to me that most of us now say "happy holiday" instead of the hated and feared "merry Christmas" even as we put "holiday" lights on our homes and "holiday" trees in our homes and send out "holiday" cards and give each other "holiday" gifts. It's a fairly simple point. But one which evidently sends people with agendas rushing to the barricades. I'm not upset, I'm merely pointing out a fairly widespread hypocricy. And the price I pay for the observation is to be lectured about secularism. . .by you. Meh.

And for the third and last time, I'm not the slightest bit concerned whether "other people think that their personal religious celebration is more important to THEM than yours." Try to open your mind and close your mouth long enough to understand that I'm complaining about Christians who are fearful or concerned about offending others, who won't say the C-word.

Please, the next time you feel the urge to give us an exegesis on the meaning and nature of religious freedom, take a crap and then a nap. Okay?

That's what I used this time, the Behr ____ (whatever it's called). The one thing that this paint/primer combo has over other paints that I've used in the past is it does bring out a truer color to what was on the paint swatch than the paint that does not have the primer mixed into it. I've never bothered simply applying a coat of primer in the past.

Then you hang out with the wrong people. (and you need to clean the sand out of your vag...)

hypocracy is what faces you when you brush your teeth.

My, my, did your little feelings get hurt? Grow up, sonny. My Christmas season won't be ruined--unless I run into you and your childish sophistry. Take it to the lunchroom in the student union, where you can dazzle the foreign students.

FYP

Sure it is - you are alreay bothered by people who have tolerance. Intolerance for tolerance is your motto, clearly. You let such petty things bother you.

Have a great HOLIDAY SEASON.

assuming that really bothers you like all that sand does. Funny how you think I'm the one being childish- ironic as heck.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Contractors who say they are done, almost done, real close to done, etc. and ain't close.

I went out to a jobsite after lunch today to do a Substantial Completion Inspection for a project. They had wanted me there last week, it got put off to early this week, then postponed again. I say they are still 3-5 days away from being ready for me. Same-old-same-old with these guys. At least it was just out in No Hope, not up in Warroad, 15 minute drive from the office, not 4 hours.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Update: saw a Best Buy spot several times today during NFL broadcasts, where they dropped a couple of "C-bombs." No word on whether the Security Council is going into emergency session.

In my experience, people who preen about how tolerant they are frequently (usually?) aren't.

If it has the primer built in, then even if I have to a second coat, it would still save me time as I almost always prime before I paint. :)

Oh No! An advertiser said Christmas!

As someone who doesn't particularly care what greeting I get at the store at Christmas time, (though I have to admit, if someone wished me a Happy Hanukkah, I might think it a bit odd, but not offensive) I need to make a comment on this. I do find the lengths some groups, people, etc. go to avoid using the word Christmas very silly and totally pointless. For example, calling it a winter break instead of a Christmas break. (though calling it a holiday break is rather logical, after all there are TWO holidays celebrated during the time off from school.) For that matter Happy Holidays makes sense for the same reason. It isn't the only holiday celebrated in the 7 day span from December 25 to Jan 1.

Second, I don't totally get why people who don't celebrate Christmas are offended by being wished a Merry Christmas. Is it such a bad thing that someone wanted you to have a good day on December 25th?

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

It grinds my gears that I didnt start the Anti-Christmas whinefest this year! It does not have the same flavor as the last few years  ;)

People can say Merry Christmas all they want to (and I guess I must have missed the part where Christmas was taken our of commercials and TV shows and replaced by "Happy Holidays") means nothing to me. But the fact is, whether you like to admit it or not it is "The Holiday Season" because there are many holidays within this time frame. (you know, the 2 months of the year one day takes up) Despite the fact that the pius believe Christmas is the only day that matters, there is more going on in November and December than their little birthday celebration and that should be recognized as well.

I mean is it not enough you can't walk into a store and not see Christmas crap everywhere as soon as Halloween is over? Or that all our favorite shows will be airing special "Christmas Episodes"? Or that we will get the idiotic "24 hour Christmas Story Marathon" on TBS along with every other Christmas cliche special they can find? Or the Christmas Tree at the White House which will be on every station plus cable like there was a war on the front law of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave? Or how about the 15th version of Charles Dicken's Immortal Classic in the theaters, or the manger scenes around town...etc. Christmas is everywhere if commercials cut down on them believe me I will shop at their store.

Maybe you dont see it and that is cool, but as someone who is not Christian, you learn to dread this time of year with the fire of a thousand suns.

Man, you're going to be a curmudgeony old fart just like Old Pio is.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

This is nothing new, but:

One snowstorm here in the Twin Cities and the mondo-idiots completely forget how, or flat out reufuse to, adjust their driving habits. Something like 400 accidents over the weekend? That's pathetic. Stay the hell off the road until you can figure out how to handle slippery roads. You live in Minnesota, for Parise's sake! I realize the influx of Somalis, etc. cause several of these accidents, and they likely have never seen snow before, but perhaps we should not hand out licenses like they are candy, either. I'd love to see some data on the Somali % of the population here vs. the % of accidents they are involved in. I swear when I see an accident or a car in the ditch/on the curb or sidewalk/smashed into a lightpole, there's about a 25% chance they are Somalian or African (and no, its not that hard to tell) immigrants. Seems a bit out of line with the population statistics, IMO.
