Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

having a pinched nerve or something in my neck grinds my gears, especially getting it the day before I play hockey for the first time in 3 weeks. I have one of those heat patch thingies, but it hurts everywhere so it's hard to know where to put it. I'm being considerate of my co-workers and saving the Icy Hot for after work.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Don't worry, I'm already prepared for the backlash, so I'll just go ahead and say it: New York, and pretty much anybody from New York that they put on the news when covering a story.

So you had a severe storm that ripped up some trees and caused some damage, and also killed a few people? Look, I'm sorry for the loss of life, but how is this the lead story on every major news outlet? It was a thunderstorm.

That's not so bad, but I've been at work for 5 minutes and walked in our kitchen just as Good Morning America was starting. They lead with the storm, of course, and right away these things happen:

1. Robyn Roberts (I think that's her name, the one that used to be on ESPN) compares the storm to Hurricane Katrina.
2. They interview a lady from the city, and she claims she thought it "was the end of the world."
3. Another lady was already calling for the government to come in and help.

That's where I have to draw the line. Comparing a thunderstorm to Katrina? Calling it the end of the world? Its so bad that you need the government to help? Apparantly if you want a lesson in hyperbole, just have a conversation with someone from New York.

I'm sorry, but you people are not nearly as tough as you like to claim.

No ****...it happens here all summer, and the storms we get here are nothing compared to what happens in tornado alley. *******.

Well, NYC is the center of the universe. You knew that, didn't you? Alas, New Yorkers and their media aren't the only ones to play this game. In Phoenix we have an annual phenomenon we call "monsoon." And you've never seen it rain in a desert like it can rain here. And since we have very few storm drains, we can get quite a bit of street flooding. Of course, none of this is excactly news, since it happens every year.

Even so, the local TV's cover it like it's a category 5 hurricane. Complete with scary graphics, special "danger" music, repeated teases about the latest monsoon "disasters," live remotes from the same spots that flood year after year, the obligatory interviews with dimwits who drive into standing water and stall out their vehicles and the whole panoply of local TV news "exaggerocoverage."

Now if you're visiting the Valley and hunkered down in your hotel room, the coverage could be a little concerning. For the rest of us, it's just the annual jerk off festival.

I visited Phoenix shortly after a Monsoon and then again about three months later. I was amazed at the difference in the landscape once the water had dried up.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Local TV especially likes to play up extremes in weather as though it's the end of the world. Once in a while they get it right. I was on my first day at a new job in Oklahoma City in May of '99. That day we had the worst tornado ever. This thing was half a mile wide and had winds that topped out at over 325 miles an hour. So powerful was this storm that there was serious discussion about adding a sixth category in the Fujita scale to accomodate it and any like it. Eventually it ws decided not to add a sixth level.

This storm killed about 45 people. The last victim was a young lady who took refuge under a freeway bridge--they found her body half a mile away! The storm hit the collar communities of Moore and Dell City particularly hard. 5,000 homes were flattened. I mean flattened. There were neighborhoods where it was possible to look around and not see a house as far as the eye could see for 360 degrees.

I am so sick of political ads and calls (still getting them:eek:) ! If I hear one more person ranting about 'Patriots' and the 'Real' Americans I will spit. Like everyone who doesn't agree with that particular view are fake, non-patriotic Americans.

Likewise does anyone really iisten to the spin doctors from either side who the main news media put on? Is anyone really stupid enough to listen to the George Orwell 1984 version of things from any of them??!!

I can't wait until after November. Just sayin'

You'll only have about 2 weeks until the next round of ads start showing up, for the next election cycle.

 For some reason this yr they are irritating me. Being independent I get the "polling" calls, the "support me" calls and then the TV ads. Most irritating= ad saying that the governor gave state employees a raise. Ha! Mr works for the govt and he hasn't had a raise in a few yrs (and even when he gets them the legislature holds them up for a yr or 2 and then doesn't honor the agreement made)- of course they also cut his staff so he is 2 X as busy. That one burns my bum. If you are going to do negative ads at least try and not bend the facts like pretzels. This applies to all sides- anyone who actually pays attention would know they are so far from the truth it is laughable. Are people really this stupid?????? Phew, that felt good.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

The lack of communication when our off-site guy has the day off. They knew about it last Friday, but I had left (but could have called me at home for a heads-up, as they've done in the past).

So I get to work today, at about 9:20 (usually start at 10, I like to read the paper). NewBoss tells me that Offsite Guy has the day off, I need to go over there (that shift starts at 9:30). I get into my car, then CoolBoss stops me and tells me another guy is already down there (this was maybe his 2nd time working down there).

So I go back inside. At 10, I go get my work stuff, and then CoolBoss tells me to head to the offsite, because Other Guy "is out of his element down there."

So, instead of just having me there at 9:30, and everything being fine, there were two of us there until noon, before I sent Other Guy back. Way to waste manhours, guys.

You should have peed on his rug.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Project managers who make it sound like you didn't do your job right, when you did. After getting an email stating that the process is incomplete, I asked the PM for examples of the issue so you we can fix the mistake and make sure it doesn't happen when the process is repeated later that day. The PM then writes back, "oh, we didn't find any mistakes we just were making sure the process was complete and there were none." Well, we told you the process was complete, did you think we were lying? And, no it's not any easier for us to look at the docs to see if the process worked than it is for you to look at the documents to see if the process worked.

On top of it, the PM made it sound like we neglected to run the process on three other databases when he hadn't asked us to run on these databases in the first place.

Did I mention that the sole reason we are running these processes is to fix a mistake that the client made in the first place?

People at work who come up to my desk and try to shake me down for $$$ for whatever charity really torque my screws.

So far this summer it's been flood relief, some needy kids camping thing, an animal shelter, United Way, another needy kids back to school thing, muscular dystrophy.

Now I just tell them no. I'll choose where I'm going to donate money to - don't come up to my desk and give me a sales pitch and expect me to pull out my wallet and hand you some cash.

I'm not cheap: I had no problem signing up for the $40 for the Washington County youth hockey beer & cheese tasting event!

United Way came to my former workplace and spent an entire day hassling everyone in the building to donate. I told them I was not participating and they then tried to shame me into donating by loudly proclaiming how important it was, blah blah blah. The guy raised his voice and basically made it clear to everyone in the vicinity that I was not going to donate. Like that's going to make me want to fork over my hard-earned money to you? I told him to get lost.
