Greatest College Hockey Memories

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

February 10 & 11, 1978 in Madison, Wisconsin. DU went on the road to face Badger Bob and the defending national champion Badgers at Dane County Coliseum. As these were the only 2 games that the teams were scheduled for that season, they both counted for 4 points each in the league standings. Eight big WCHA points were on the line and first place in the league.

DU was on a 7 game win streak that began in January at Notre Dame where they won 5-3 in the 2nd game of a road series in South Bend. The next two weekends they swept UMD and Michigan at home by scores of 4-0, 8-2, 14-4 and 9-2. The weekend before going to Madison they traveled to MTU for Winter Carnival. They beat MTU by scores of 2-1 and 3-0 in one of the tougher places to play on the road, especially during Winter Carnival. All American goalie Ernie Glanville pulled a hamstring in the 2nd game of the MTU series and did not make the trip to Madison. The goaltending duties all fell on the shoulders of Jim Bales. Third string walk-on goalie Walt Aufderhide was the back-up.

The Dane was packed to the rafters and the place was going wild as the first game started. DU came out guns ablazing and crushed the Badgers 5-1 in a hard fought physical game. Jim Bales was spectacular in net as he fought off Mark Johnson, Mike Eaves & Company. All American Julian Barretta was in goal for the Badgers and had one of his toughest nights of the season. All American Doug Berry and Company beat him for 5 that night, not an easy task. Berry faced Johnson all weekend long. The Berry and Johnson lines were the two most potent lines in college hockey that season.

On Saturday night, DU knew that the Badgers would come out flying. Again the Dane was packed and the crowd was wild. The Saturday night game was a much tighter game with DU prevailing 3-2. Again it as a hard fought physical game with great goaltending by both Bales and Barretta. DU went home with the 8 points and 1st place which they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the season.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

I attended the two longest men's collegiate hockey games in history, Yale v. Union, March 4, 2006, 141 minutes, 35 seconds and last season's record breaker, Union v. Quinnipiac, 150:22. Both resulted in Union losses, but last year at least Union showed the resiliency it needed to come back and win that ECAC second round series, 2 games to 1. Both record breaking games ended after 1:00 a.m. Watching them reminded me of the movie, Groundhogs Day, where every a.m. Bill Murray woke up to the radio alarm clock blasting Sonny and Cher. In the case of these two epics, every time I looked up the Zamboni was chugging around the rink.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

I have 2 biggies.

Last year's Albany regional. RIT coming in with their first ever tournament appearance. I went just hoping not to get blown out. All of the sudden the Tigers not only win against Denver, but shock New Hampshire. The scene when RIT scored the 3 goals in a matter of a couple minutes that broke open a close game was amazing. Also, after the game where everyone was in a crazy stupor in the concourse celebrating the win. I don't think I will ever forget that feeling.

The second was RIT's 5th DI NCAA game. St. Lawrence was gracious enough to give RIT games at the Ritter. They were coming in as #18 on USCHO's poll. RIT's Jocelyn Guimond made 66 saves in an improbable 3-2 win. I think everyone was in shock and it took a long time to calm down from the excitement.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

1st Round 2003 ECAC Playoffs: RPI's Ben Barr scored two 3rd period shorties (50 secs. apart) vs. Union, in their barn. RPI wins 3-2.
I've never felt the air get sucked out of building so fast...nor have I laughed that long or hard since then.
Oddly enough, Barr is now an AC at Union...for some reason, his bio on U's team site doesn't mention that particular performance.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

I know you said to avoid national championships...but
When Umaine won the 1999 National Championship my father had taken me out to see some show that night (I was seven years old and I wasn't really a hockey fan yet), and he couldn't watch the game. To his credit, he handled it pretty well, and the score was actually announced at intermission to appease all the dads in the audience. After the show ended and he found out the game was going into OT, he practically carried me out to the car so he could listen to the game on the radio. The person in the car in front of us was slow leaving the garage, and we couldn't get a signal on the radio. I thought my father was going to lose his mind. After we got home and my mom put me to bed, I remember hearing a triumphant scream of "YES!" as Umaine scored the game winner. My next-door neighbors and the people across the street were yelling so loud that I could hear them in my room. My neighbor put a Maine jersey on his mailbox. Kids the next day at school were wearing Maine jerseys. Even today, seeing a video of that goal gives me chills and makes me smile...even though I go to Providence now. (My father has promised me he will never, ever cheer for the Friars. Oh well.)

My second favorite memory was when I was in 7th or 8th grade and my father and I went to the UMaine/UNH game. The atmosphere was really intense and Alfond was rocking. Umaine had a one-goal lead when partway through the second period Jimmy Howard got hurt and they replaced him with Matt Lundin, a freshman. He had an older brother, Mike, who played defense for Umaine. After one particularly rough stretch, I saw Mike skate up to him and like, tap him on the leg to say good job. It was a really touching moment between brothers, and Matt Lundin played a phenomenal game and preserved the shutout. Plus it's always a good feeling to beat UNH.

Unfortunately, I haven't had a favorite Friar memory, but beating BU and Umaine last year was nice.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

Watching the winning goal from behind the net during the longest men's D1 hockey game played (to date). Quinnipiac at Union, Friday March 12, 2010, 5OT!

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

This was too long ago and i was too young to remember what year it was, probably some time in the mid to early 90's but MSU was playing at home against Notre Dame. Notre Dame had a goal lead most of the game and about halfway through the third period the crowd really started to get behind the team. All of Munn would stand and chant "let's go state! let's go state!" and it would get faster and louder as we began to put on the pressure. We would get a chance and everybody would break chant to freak out but it always started right back up. This went on for minutes until we tied it late in the period and everything just blew up. I remember we won, but i don't remember how. I was probably about 5 or 6 years old. I just can't remember a time i have ever seen the entire crowd get behind a team like that.

And then a few years back we played Michigan at home. I think Abdelkader scored to put us up 3-1 and then probably about 15 seconds later kennedy slammed in a rebound on a 2-1 and it was the craziest i remember Munn being since the 90's. I was freaking out and jumping around in the aisle because I required as much room as possible for how much i was celebrating.

Oh also, i am editing this because i forgot the mention what a great thread this is. College hockey truly makes some amazing memories.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

I just want to see what people call their best memories in college hockey.

Try to avoid National Championships....that's too easy. Really dig deep. Think about the friendships and the people you met over the years that have made College Hockey a great part of your life.

For me, I think it is all of those nights at the Golden Bee after games @ CC. Win or lose it is always a good time.

The best was the infamous sombrero night. There might some fellow poster who remember that one.

I also have to list the night that BC won the title in 2008. Being in the BC section by a complete fluke, achsdu and I blended in well and had a blast. He doesn't post here much, but DU fans know him. All I know is I was in the JumboTron a lot that night....yet people didn't run for the exits in terror!!! I made progress that night!

Avoiding championships...

My favorite off-ice memory was before the Friday night Maine-BC game at Alfond Arena my freshman year. It was Len Ceglarski's last trip to Alfond before he retired. I stopped by the locker room and gave him my customary "Good luck" before the game. He nodded and thanked me and I turned to leave, but for some reason I said, "The game is really going to miss you, Coach." I don't know if it was what I said, or just that he wanted something else to think about right before the game, but we had a lengthy conversation after that. An assistant coach had to remind him twice that he still had to address the team and the clock was ticking. He shook my hand and we went back to our respective locker rooms. I remember being stunned that he would take a few precious minutes before a huge game to talk to a kid from the other team. A real class act.

My favorite on-ice memory was the 1989 NCAA quarters, Game 3 against PC. Maine was down 3-1 and it looked like the season was over. Then Bruce Major scored the most improbable goal you'll ever see and Scott Pellerin fires an unreal slapshot and the game is tied. The end of regulation was frantic, but OT was even worse (or better, if you had a strong heart). Finally Martin Robitaille lifted a backhander past a downed PC goalie and a desperation swipe by Lyle Mongoose and Maine was on the way to the Frozen Four. I had sustained an injury two years earlier and given up ice hockey. I couldn't even stand to watch a game. That night is what brought me back. Two years later I was in the Dexter Lounge, reliving those memories with Pelly and Roby. I can't imagine where life would have taken me if that game hadn't happened.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

#6 BC upsets #3 Dartmouth in 2006 in double OT to send them to the Women's Frozen Four. Remains my favorite sports moment ever I think.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

Non-game memory - meeting Keith Magnuson and Bobby Orr before practice one day at the old DU Arena. The Black Hawks were in town to play the Rockies and Keith came by the old barn to see Murray Armstrong. He brought Bobby along for the ride. When Murray arrived he and Keith got into a lengthy conversation. As a result I had a nice 45 minute conversation with Bobby.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

1976-1977 season, we made a road trip to see Merrimack play 2 @ Ohio State. 16 in a Winnebago (think Spicoli's van only bigger:D). Stopped in Canton at the Football Hall of Fame. Stayed in an incredible frat house. Waitress at Columbus bar couldn't understand what a "picha a beah" was. 'Mack lost both games (they were D2 then) but played them tough. OSU's rink was really bad back then. Warriors went on to beat Ned Harkness coached Union to win the ECAC D2 title that season, and I got to drink from the championship trophy.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

The triple overtime game in the 2006 mid west regional final, between Wisconsin and Cornell, is my favorite college hockey memory.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

One of my greatest college hockey moments came at the World Arena several seasons ago. It was the night of the bench clearing brawl between CC and UA-Anchorage. After the Tigers scored a game winning goal in overtime, a UA-A player bunch Matt Zaba in the head on his way to the celebration that was on the other end of the ice. Patrasso on the CC club, went after the player who punched Zaba and a full out brawl followed. Fights all over the ice. A total of 10 suspensions. Blood all over the ice. It was a great night at the World Arena; for weeks after the fight, people were showing all their friends how Brandon Straub hit Beagle with an upper cut thus ending the brawl.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

- Gionta scoring 5 goals in 1st period vs. Maine in 2000-2001 season.

i was at this one as well, and it was truly remarkable... i think my favorite memory from the game however was when maine scored their second goal to cut the lead to 7-2 in the third... i celebrated with a mocking exuberance that drew a roar of laughter from the surronding bc fans...

avoiding the obvious maine championships in 93 and 99, my favorite was the 2001 regional game between maine and minnesota. i was about ten rows back beind the minnesota net when maine scored with 2.7 seconds left and then won it in overtime... http://www.uscho.com/recaps/2001/03/23/liscak-sends-black-bears-into-quarters/

it turned out to be shawn walsh's last victory before he passed, as maine lost the next evening to bc...

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

Wow! Reading through these has been a great trip down memory lane!
A couple of mine would have to be the 1995 FF semi-final when Maine beat Michigan in 3OT, Dan Shermerhorn potting the game-winner. Our goalie Alfie Michaud stood on his head that whole tournament, including stopping a clean breakaway in....the 1st ot, I think. Michigan's goalie in that game was a freshman by the name of Marty Turco.

The other, as gscott13 mentioned in the previous post was that Maine Minnesota game in the 2001 Regional. My stepson and I were in the balcony right behind the goal when Maine tied it with 2.7 seconds left and then won it in ot.

Re: Greatest College Hockey Memories

- Gionta scoring 5 goals in 1st period vs. Maine in 2000-2001 season.

- Farkas going through the entire SLU team and scoring with a few mins left in regulation in the FF semis in Providence 2000.

- BC coming back from I think 4 goals down vs. Notre Dame in Conte somewhere between 1998 and 2001. Probably the loudest it's ever been since 1997-1998 for hockey games at least.

- Marty Hughes capping off a last minute comeback for BC (scored 3 straight goals) over UNH in Conte in 2000-2001 just before his mom passed away from cancer.

- Ben Eaves batting the puck out of midair in overtime in Manchester 2004 regional to beat Michigan.

- BC scoring 3 goals in under 3 minutes vs. Miami in Worcester in 2008 and then Whitney winning it in overtime.

- Talking about going back to back to SteveF the day of the 2007 title game vs. MSU. WHOOPS. To be fair they did win in 2008 like I predicted that day! 1 out of 2 isn't bad.
Good stuff! Saw them all, except for you and SteveF jinxing the Eagles. ;)
I was sitting beside the goal judge in Manchester when Eaves scored, yapping at him for two periods to 'light the lamp". He high fived me on his way out after the goal. :)
