I heard CA Representative Jackie Speier on the radio earlier today.

In the 1970s she was on Leo Ryan's congressional staff when he was killed trying to help the people in Guyana duped by Jim Jones. She was shot and seriously wounded in that attack and shortly after that nearly 1000 Jones cult members drank the kool aid.

She spoke of the book she wrote about the Jonestown tragedy a couple of years ago and how people used to ask her if she saw parallels between Jim Jones and donald trump. She was reluctant to see the similarities then but now admits there a lot of parallels between them. She likely knows a lot more about Jim Jones than I do but I'm surprised she didn't see the similarities when she wrote the book. In my view trump is an almost perfect amalgam of Jones and Mussolini.

They did not come close to shooting their wad last Wednesday. None of the important people were casualties on January 6th. There is a whole lot more to come. A whole lot more.

Berlusconi is nearer the mark than Mussolini. There's a podcast about the former called Bunga Bunga which overreaches a bit too much for drama, but is eye-opening about a stupid Trumpian demagogue obsessed with fame and power through media manipulation. I read something else in a great piece in NYT yesterday, it's about where we are as a "post-truth" and "pre-fascist" society by the guy who wrote the book on fascism, which said Trump could never be a true fascist, because he loves foreign dictators too much while hating his own heritage. And, "His vision never extended beyond his mirror."
Also required reading, "After the Sacred Landslide" in Defector which puts Trumpism in its proper place in one's imagination.

I think Dump is something new: Berlusconi + Mussolini.

He has Berlusconi's media-gossip presence and his celeb lifestyle and his "bunga bunga" crass idiocy. He has Mussolini's fascism, his bovine anti-intellectualism, and his fetish for violence.

Republican pollster Frank Lutz claims 10 republican senators may vote to convict trump if the House impeaches him. I would be willing to bet he's off by at least 5.
 
We’re a country of morons. Susan Collins said her first thought was ‘it must be the Iranians’ and now people are attacking her all over social media. There was literally a big story in the couple of days leading up to the certification that they threatened to fly a plane into the Capitol because of the assassination a year ago.
