If the Middle East goes into chaos (I mean, even worse) ...

If the Middle East were to go into next level chaos it would affect the world because the trade winds would blow the fallout* everywhere. (Yeah, I just said it.)

* Not the political kind, the strontium and cesium kind.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 7 - The Nightmare that Threatens the World!!!

Oil is sorta a global commodity, but not totally given the issues of shipping it. The US by law IIRC is not allowed to export domestic oil. While I wouldn't nationalize the industry, I would have the Justice Dept or CFPB sniff around if gasoline generated from domestic oil skyrocketed, as again the production and refinement of that supply would not have any actual effect from troubles in the Middle East. So I do go along with a more national strategy for managing oil, because America First and screw the global supply. Let someone else commit their military to keeping oil pumping over there.

I assume you support a plan to move the domestic oil domestically (to and from the Gulf Coast refineries from the Bakken and the Eagle Ford shale plays or the Canadian tar sands). Or you're on board with building more local refineries so there's fewer rail/pipeline shipments, but more by truck.

Heck, you're in a good mood. Forget oil. Let's go green: Canada has some of the world's largest uranium deposits. No greenhouse gases.

Yeah, I'm being a $mart*****; but, getting out of the Middle East and doing things here that some may not like is a package deal. Which devil you looking to dance with? (Personally, I'd build here.)

That's a deal I'm happy to make. I don't give a fig if Keystone is built or not. In fact I wouldn't mind as it gets more oil under US control once it gets here although in this case we'd have to pay more for this particular oil since it costs more to extract. Regarding refineries, there a plenty of sh !tty places in this country where you can place one. For example, Detroit! Really, what are you ruining if you place a few refineries, nuclear power plants, etc in that place? Half the population has left and its an environmental wasteland that will take centuries to clean up. Put these things over there and the remaining citizens will most likely welcome it.

Now mind you, its not all about drilling/fracking. US needs to ramp up clean energy sources in order to achieve 100% energy independence (including Canada as here in the Northeast we get a lot of electricity from Quebec hydro). However once achieved I'll say again we have no interests in the Middle East beyond taking out the occasional terrorist.

We agree on something? Better mark this day on the calendar. ;) :)

The problem? What we're talking about is a long-term strategy and plan for US energy independence. That doesn't play well in the "immediate gratification takes too long" society we've created.

Tell MS13 or the Bloods that ISIS has plans to take over the SoCal drug trade and each of them would have more than that line up to take ISIS out ... in about 20 minutes.

Jeebus. That would be a bloody as all **** battle.

This reminds me of stories Wehrmacht soldiers told of fighting street battles against criminal gangs in eastern Europe. They basically said, "I'd rather fight 500 French, British or American soldiers with howitzers and tanks than 50 Slavic criminals with shivs and sink pipes." After order broke down on the eastern front German soldiers dreamed of being transferred to the west.

Tunisia is building a wall on it's border. Interesting.

Would a DNS type attack cause an "Error 504" like that site mentions?

Error 504 is a gateway timeout, so it's possible, especially if the site is a redirect to another server. However, unless the site messed with nginx or apache (or whatever they're using for a webserver), it normally wouldn't look as such.

Just a thought... what if today's market shutdown was intentional to test the waters of what would happen when martial law comes to fruition and the government completely shuts down the stock market?

http://www.slate.com/articles/healt...le_who_claim_to_know_the_truth_about_jfk.html

The answer is that people who suspect conspiracies aren’t really skeptics. Like the rest of us, they’re selective doubters. They favor a worldview, which they uncritically defend. But their worldview isn’t about God, values, freedom, or equality. It’s about the omnipotence of elites.

Conspiracy chatter was once dismissed as mental illness. But the prevalence of such belief, documented in surveys, has forced scholars to take it more seriously. Conspiracy theory psychology is becoming an empirical field with a broader mission: to understand why so many people embrace this way of interpreting history. As you’d expect, distrust turns out to be an important factor. But it’s not the kind of distrust that cultivates critical thinking.

In 1999 a research team headed by Marina Abalakina-Paap, a psychologist at New Mexico State University, published a study of U.S. college students. The students were asked whether they agreed with statements such as “Underground movements threaten the stability of American society” and “People who see conspiracies behind everything are simply imagining things.” The strongest predictor of general belief in conspiracies, the authors found, was “lack of trust.”

But the survey instrument that was used in the experiment to measure “trust” was more social than intellectual. It asked the students, in various ways, whether they believed that most human beings treat others generously, fairly, and sincerely. It measured faith in people, not in propositions. “People low in trust of others are likely to believe that others are colluding against them,” the authors proposed. This sort of distrust, in other words, favors a certain kind of belief. It makes you more susceptible, not less, to claims of conspiracy.
