Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

They weren't. MSNBC is now. They mentioned it for about a minute, then went back to talking about the debt ceiling. Only after an hour plus did they actually start talking about it.

CNN is talking about the heat.

The "evil" Al Jazeera is all over it. As usual.

Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

It's easier to have reporters there when you know in advacne it's going to happen. ;)

Ha, I know you're joking but for anyone who missed it during the ruckus in Egypt, Al Jazeera English is largely made up of Brits (it seems) and its coverage of actual news makes our stations over here look like they are managed by and staffed with a bunch of thumbsuckers.

To be fair, it's a different audience. Al Jazeera English is pitched to international businessmen, foreign policy specialists, bankers, NGO officials. The average viewer probably has a doctorate and a $200k salary. They are basically The Economist for TV.

And it shows. They do make every US network look like the slow track shop class.

No doubt, and am sure you recall there was a good discussion on here about the reasons for the differences during the Egypt deal, but regardless of why it might be the case, Al Jazeera is certainly far more informative than the slop we happily trowel on ourselves over here.

Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

Geeze. Norway just confirmed that at least 80 are dead on Utøya.

This WSJ editorial
seems pretty face-palmy right now based on what people are claiming to know about the suspect.

Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

So this wasn't so much a terrorist act as it was a right-wing ideologue assassinating (or trying to) the current and future leaders of the Labour party. See, the "camp" wasn't set up for random girls and boys, it was an annual retreat for the "Workers Youth League" (AUF) where several of the ruling party members - including Norway's Prime Minister - spent summers during their childhood. This would be the American equivalent of some nut walking into a meeting of the College Democrats and shooting up the place, after setting off a bomb outside the White House.

Meanwhile, on the Fox "News" website, we find comments such as these:

scottnmead in reply to semperfisemper
Ummm what good does simply voting them out? They will be voted back in 4 or 8 years. They will never leave. This guy has it right. This is what we need here to forever rid ourselves of the left. This guy had the guts to do what we do not.

jonathan.warren
Now Breivik would know how to deal with leftists

redjack in reply to jonathan.warren
There are more like him out there and the leftists should be..................................

scottnmead
This guy is not a nut job. I hear all of my fellow conservatives and shake my head. What good does it do us to vote the Liberals out? They will only be voted back in someday. It happens over and over. This guy did what we need to do here. This guy loves his country and people more than we true Americans love ours. Stop trying to cover it up and be nice. This guy did what we all need to do. If we dont then we just pass the problem on to our children. So I ask how for real are you to rid ourselves of the left? Or are you as weak kneed as the Liberals you say to hate?

And from freerepublic:

These were 16 to 22 year old sons & daughters of COMMUNISTS & SOCIALISTS at a Communist Socialist training camp on the island.
That is College age indoctrination camps. Not the American Summer Camps.

Government Funded to continue the destruction of Christian ,Capitalist and a free society.

Any wonder how Hitler did what he did. He would have been a hero had he not involved Germany in attacking Europe. Little did he know he could have taken over Europe without firing a shot.
This man recognized how evil they are, as do most of us, only he felt worse about it than we do.

He went on a rampage over his righteous indignation.

Face it , he did to them what the left has been saying for years what they want to do to those who are against gay rights, Gay marriage, socialized medicine, against Obama, whatever.

He was BILL AYERS and the WEATHER UNDERGROUND with a better opportunity and better skills.

They deserved to die because they were evil...

Islam and communism and socialism are indeed evil made manifest and will never give up or stop until the End. That is what people need to really fully realize- this is not just a few “bad people” or people with mistaken ideas, good intentions gone wrong, etc, it is indeed Satan at work and the devil will never stop.

So the media can stop acting like this was a nut who went berserk at a summer camp and tell it like it really is.

Uh, yes it was. Nobody has a monopoly on terrorism, and this was fully intended to instill lots and lots of fear.

Textbook terrorism.

Now that it's coming from the far right and not the "normal" suspects, it will be interesting to see the discourse.

Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

It's never a bad idea to walk the rhetoric back a bit. If nothing else, it makes compromise possible, and as history constantly reminds us, refusal to compromise is where we really get into trouble as individuals, a country, or a species.

I didn't say it wasn't terrorism, but its more a political assassination. Were Lee Harvey Oswald or John Hinckley terrorists or assassins or both? This guy in Norway is no different, except he killed dozens of future leaders of the Labour party. More than likely he killed a couple dozen future members of Parliament and at least one Prime Minister.

Of course, the GOP reaction is to hold hearings into Muslim extremists. So I guess if you have a bone to pick with this not being called terrorism, take it up with Congressman Peter King.

Like saying it's like a Hitler youth camp?

Virulent hate-mongering will always diddle the pleasure center of the right wing lunatic fringe, sure, but that's it. There are a helluva lot fewer people who will just toss off bon mots about "second amendment remedies" lightly after this. The vast majority of righties are good, just like the vast majority of Muslims are good. There are a few psychos, and then there are the Becks and Kings of the world who capitalize for personal gain, but the bulk of humanity turns away from them in disgust.

Because they commit the vast majority of terror attacks?

Because they commit the vast majority of terror attacks?

Funny you should bring that up...

Here in America: PDF

An FBI report in January of this year shows there were 48 Muslim terror plots in this country post 9/11. There were 103 terror plots by other groups, including 93 that were planned or executed by "right wing," "Neo-Nazi," "White Supremacists," "KKK" or "anti-government" groups. Edit: Also "anti-abortion"

Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

Well, first of all, the European stats (especially ones with a ThinkProgress stamp on them) are irrelevant when the subject is the United States Congress holding hearings on radicalization in the United States.

As for the United States, here's the Wall Street Journal:

Since 9/11, there have been more than 50 known cases, involving about 130 individuals, in which terrorist plots were hatched on American soil. These include plots to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, an office tower in Dallas, a federal court house in Illinois, the Washington, D.C. metro, and the trans-Alaska pipeline. Most of these schemes were foiled at an early stage, though the Times Square bomber failed only at the moment of ignition. The worst attack was Major Nidal Hasan's November 2009 murder of 13 soldiers at Fort Hood.

In a useful report published by the Rand Corporation last year, terrorism expert Brian Michael Jenkins notes that the plotters were a "diverse group" that included Caucasians, African-Americans and Hispanics as well as immigrants (or their children) from about 20 countries. Yet all but two of the plotters were Muslim, and those two sought to offer their services to al Qaeda.

I just don't understand how a right wing attack in Europe proves that Congress should not be holding hearings into Islamic radicalism. That's a ridiculous argument. If you want to say they should also be holding hearings looking into right-wing radicalism, fine. But that's a totally different argument to the one you made.

Oh, well, if it was in one of Murdoch's rags it has to be true. I just quoted the FBI, not some report cited in the <del>News of the World</del> Wall Street Journal. But I guess the FBI is too liberal for you.

What I said about the hearings was

which somehow you interpret to mean they shouldn't be holding hearings at all. Yes, I think Peter King's group should be exploring ALL domestic terrorism threats (not just the punching bags for his political points). Let's start by investigating those nasty terrorists from the IRA.

Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

It seemed to me that you seemed pretty disdainful of the idea of holding hearings on Islamic extremism. Perhaps not. My apologies.

Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

Too bad we can't just cancel them, like particle-antiparticle annihilation. Send the intolerant Christianist extremists over to fight the intolerant Islamist extremists and... um...

Never mind. Carry on.

Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

If you add in hearings about Christian extermeism, KKK, Nazi's, anti-abortion extremeism, etc to just talk about people who are terrorising American citizens in general, that would be far more useful. Limiting it to Islamic only just covers a small part of the whole picture.

Re: Global War on Terror III: Dick Cheney's Hague ICC Vacation

Like all the abortion clinic bombings, Oklahoma City, and the Giffords shooting? Muslins all a dem!
