Sounds like you are assuming either that deadly conflicts have never been avoided or that it simply doesn't matter whether they are or not.

We avoid them ... until they happen despite best efforts.

A conflict will fester and continue until it is set to a hard, unforgiving resolution.
As long as each contestant is "sent to their corner" at the end of a round, well, the bell will ring soon enough and the next round starts.

In a post-nuclear world, I tend to think diplomacy has a value.

My error on 2.

I doubt whether many think diplomacy is a panacea. It will become more valuable to U.S. citizens under the current administration, though, given how skillful a negotiator POTUS is.
