OK, you bring up cosplay: Say we as a society had 18 hours (Carrington Event flare travel time) of notice that Sol split the seam with a stale wind steamer of Carrington level. What's your plan? Coming up with a plan One Second After is not a plan.

I spend a fair amount of time pondering the electrical generation, transmission, and distribution grid in the northern part of MISO. An EMP of any origin would be a devastator. I would want to be nowhere near any city 96 hours into it.

I rarely say this but I'm going to say it.

This is so dumb.

I'm not calling you dumb, I'm calling what you're worried about dumb. Actually, it's not dumb. It's a fantasy -- a desire to see everyone not Sufficiently Serious And Prepared perish. It's the vanity of Homo Semper Paratus.

A lightning bolt could be headed your way as we speak. Why aren't you hiding under your bed in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault?

I am extremely risk-averse. Risks I plan for: losing a job, losing BOTH jobs, serious medical issue, massive damage to home, any manageable issue involving daughter's health or safety which I care not to speculate on, Mets lose again.

Risks I do not plan for: global thermonuclear war, Rise of the Scary Foodless Darkies, alien invasion, Left Behind, Yellowstone caldera supervolcano eruption, spontaneous appearance of black hole 8 miles above Lynah Rink during Fish 'N Fowl while up by a goal but on penalty kill late in the third period.

The rank order of risk mitigation planning is probability x lethality x potential mitigation. All of the latter score zero.

You are now free to fantasize about your line's genetic survival over mine. I have a heedless, hedonistic party to go to. :)

Ah MISO, where they hold literally 500 meetings a year, each of which lasts 5-7 hours, and expect people to actually stay caught up on what they're doing.

Thankfully I've only had to dabble in MISO, SPP, and FERC stuff. FERC at least made sense, even if you're always deemed a no-nothing outsider if you're not from about one of a half dozen DC law firms. The regional transmission companies need some major overhauling, IMO.

The same tiny steps that get one a toe hold in a massive event (EMP, Yellowstone caldera) are the ones that make a three-day blizzard where the power goes out a minor annoyance. So, to me it's not dumb. It's part of living on the end of a single phase power line twenty miles from the substation. YMMV.

I understand that if you're way out in the middle of BFE lots of things take on a more earnest character.

But then why even talk about EMPs? A stiff wind and one flooded access road might put you in the same situation.

I was venting because I loathe the End Times Porn that the Deplorables are pinning their hopes on to avoid demographic eclipse. It's just another take on the age old fantasy of Country Mouse that City Mouse is only here by his sufferance, and it only takes a little tweaking to see the Khmer rural revenge fantasy underneath it.

After I read Cormac McCarthy's The Road, I often thought that if I ever had a chance to ask McCarthy one question in person, I would ask whether the point of the book was for the reader to ask themselves whether it was better to be Man or Woman. I know my answer.

Dr. Mrs. and I have that covered nicely. I hope there's some reason for Phoenix to be targeted (our national strategic rattlesnake reserve?) to take care of our daughter.

I had hoped we'd get the species off this rock before the apes won, but evidently not.
