Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

Gatwick had guards in full gear as far back as 1996. The more I flew internationally that year the more it felt the norm not the exception. Only having flown within NA until then it was an eye-opener.

I flew out of Amsterdam shortly after the shoe bomber had boarded a flight from there. They didn't **** around. I've only been in a few European airports (Heathrow, Manchester, Schipol). Not sure how common this is but Schipol had security at the gate. You'd start in an unsecured waiting area, then shortly before your flight boarded they'd process you through security (passport exit stamp, body scanners, pat downs) and you'd end up in a secured waiting area until your boarding group is called. Their searches were very thorough. A few women were shocked when they went straight for the bra underwire check with no warning after it shows up on the body scanner.

Schipol has had that for quite some time. I started flying there monthly in 2003. Long interview then the close body search. Once saw an old man seated with a great view of those being checked with a huge grin on his face

Wait, what was he convicted of here? Threats or an attempt? I feel like his sentence is a bit harsh for a hairbrained plan to find a deathray. Seems like a huge stretch to convict him under that law.

He was convicted of "conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction and distributing information about weapons of mass destruction."

Maybe his death ray works.

These laws are intended to be invoked against the person who eventually, inevitably, builds a dirty bomb.

With general searches I can't find anything concerning whether the design was viable, and I am not going to make specific searches and get visited by DHS. I live with DHS and that's close enough thank you.

Does he also own a space delivery service that employs a Cyclops, a lobster man, and a foul-mouthed robot that enjoys bending things?

Somebody should also check him for numerous doomsday devices, too.

Good news, everyone...

Which is what I am kind of uncomfortable with about this law. Conspiring and having the capacity are two different things. It seems like this guy was just a nutjob sh_tforbrains who had zero chance of acquiring the means to carry this out. If that's the case, the punishment doesn't seem to fit the crime.

OK, but then he has to go to the bin. His plan was to kill Obama and as many (other) Muslims as he could. Dude is aspiring to mass murder. At some point after his doomsday device beta test fails, he might get tired of waiting and buy himself a gun or a truck and do it the old fashion way.

I agree he has to be severely punished, but it should have been under conspiracy to commit murder, not some stupid Bush-era WMD law.
