Get out; a migrant's going to live here instead. Oh, you don't want them there? You're under arrest. http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=55891

If anything in that story were even remotely true, Mr. Troll, the Italian parliament would have a vote of no-confidence in its PM within days. Italy has a history of turning over that position about every two years for the past decade.

So Rachel Maddow is talking about how ISIS is trying to get terrorists to hit people with cars. They had some ISIS propaganda on there that included a picture of a huge Ford truck captioned "The Ultimate Mowing Machine"

I tried to stifle my laugh unsuccessfully.

Read the recent NPR piece about the guy who created fictional news stories, flaggy. He describes some people as being suckers, eager to fall for false stories and conspiracies like red meat. I'm sure most of us who read it thought immediately of you.

Right, I should trust the epitome of fake news during the entire election cycle that then wants to point the finger when it's losing ratings...

Re: Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

Though I doubt anything meaningful will come of it, funding the War on Terror may have just become more affordable.

The Pentagon hid a report that showed $125B in wasted military spending out of fears that Congress may cut their budget.

The Defense Business Board was ordered to conduct the study by Deputy Defense Secretary Robert O. Work, the Pentagon’s second-highest-ranking official. At first, Work publicly touted the efficiency drive as a top priority and boasted about his idea to recruit corporate experts to lead the way.

After the board finished its analysis, however, Work changed his position. In an interview with The Post, he did not dispute the board’s findings about the size or scope of the bureaucracy. But he dismissed the $125 billion savings proposal as “unrealistic” and said the business executives had failed to grasp basic obstacles to restructuring the public sector.

“There is this meme that we’re some bloated, giant organization,” he said. “Although there is a little bit of truth in that . . . I think it vastly overstates what’s really going on.”

Work said the board fundamentally misunderstood how difficult it is to eliminate federal civil service jobs — members of Congress, he added, love having them in their districts — or to renegotiate defense contracts.

He said the Pentagon is adopting some of the study’s recommendations on a smaller scale and estimated it will save $30 billion by 2020. Many of the programs he cited, however, have been on the drawing board for years or were unrelated to the Defense Business Board’s research.

Work acknowledged that the push to improve business operations lost steam after then-Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel was replaced by Ashton B. Carter in February 2015. Carter has emphasized other goals, such as strengthening the Pentagon’s partnerships with high-tech firms.

“We will never be as efficient as a commercial organization,” Work said. “We’re the largest bureaucracy in the world. There’s going to be some inherent inefficiencies in that.”

As if Congress will ever cut the military's budget. The minute anyone votes for it, they're branded a commie traitor to the republic.

Re: Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

Pretty sure it isn't limited to them. I've seen pork spending to rig the budgets everywhere, from government to commercial.

Absolutely it's not limited to the military. However, when you're on the scale of $125B of wasted spending, which has a real impact on the federal deficit and debt, it's worth noting and doing so repeatedly.

ah, the holidays at Rockefeller Center, crowded with tourists busy taking pictures; the 8-story tall, brightly-lit holiday tree topped with the giant Swarovski crystal star; the iconic ice skating rink; the anti-terror police squad in helmets, full body armor, carrying semi-automatic rifles....

My son tells me that this is quite common in Paris.

That's been true since I last went to Europe in 2003. I remember Prague had something that looked like a tank parked outside of their opera house (could have been their orchestra hall).

Automatic rifles were the norm in most European airports we visited and throughout London.

Rome had police officers wearing full battle gear that had the word (I'm going to get close, but likely wrong here) "Campione" on their body armor and holding sub-machine guns, just standing on the corners. This was the summer of 2000.

I was in London a few weeks after their subway bombings
I saw lots of police officers with sub-machine guns walking around tub stations and around parliament. Otherwise they were dressed like ordinary police officers.

Carabinieri, possibly? Those are Italian civil law enforcement.

Samsonite, that was the it! I was way off!

I got the C, A and then ending I right. Partial credit? Also, it was 16.5 years ago now.

I think it was d-mn impressive to remember anything at all. I was in Rome 15 years ago. What I remember is the train station is insane, the Roma children are organized into pick pocketing gangs with the efficiency of the mid-70s Dolphin defense, cats have completely taken over the Coliseum and the Forum, and I remember a Roman soldier re-enactor sitting on the steps on a break staring bored out into space and I thought "I'll bet an actual soldier sat there just like that 2000 years ago!" I sure don't recall any proper nouns.

The Forum and Coliseum were actually pretty clean when I was there because it happened to be in 2000, the year of the Great Jubilee. It turns out that Rome gets a thorough cleaning for these Jubilees. I knew nothing of it until someone mentioned that while my buddy and I were there.

The Roma children are really good, and a trio got my wallet - a large, difficult wallet to steal from my front pocket. Thankfully, I had most of my essential docs and traveler's checks in a pouch around my neck, but I still lost about $300 cash and my credit cards. So I had to make it around Europe for the next 11 or 12 days on roughly $1000. I was in luck then as the USD was extremely strong against almost every single European currency due to a hard recession that was sweeping the continent at the time. I made it home with $400 in traveler's checks remaining.

Gatwick had guards in full gear as far back as 1996. The more I flew internationally that year the more it felt the norm not the exception. Only having flown within NA until then it was an eye-opener.
