Maybe do-chebags will stop with the "religion of peace strikes again" garbage now. This was an attack on Muhammed's tomb in the name of religion. That's like the Tea Party suicide bombing the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the name of patriotism.

These people aren't religious fanatics, they're just fanatics who happen to communicate their insanity via religion.

Just one problem:
They call themselves the "Islamic State ... " so it's ISIS, ISIL, or the new and improved DA'ISH.

OK, another problem:
They tend (predominantly) to recruit folks of Islamic faith.

And kill (predominantly) folks of Islamic faith. As for the name, the Westboro Baptist Church can tell you all about how much that matters.

To a shut-in in Arkansas the only Muslims they ever hear about are terrorists, so Muslims are all terrorists. To anybody with half a brain a billion plus worldwide Muslims producing a handful of terrorists no more condemns all Muslims than a billion plus Christians producing a handful of Republicans condemns all Christians.

That's the best argument to be made.

Then you blow it because the rest of your post is your standard bigotry toward the South and Republicans. (And I'll go on record that ISIS, DA'ISH, whatever, is more than a handful of people.)

It is a handful, but the people who project back onto the religion itself based on those numbers are ludicrous.

It only seems like a cogent observation if you literally don't know any Muslims except the ones blowing themselves up on TV plus Kareem (and of course Obama). It's the equivalent of "knowing" blacks are criminals because you live in a leafy white suburb and only sees black people as perps on Cops.

Most Muslims no doubt see the average Christian as a sniper picking off kids at a wedding. SSS and confirmation bias.

Spent a great 4th of July at a fireworks national tribute talking to a first generation Muslim Somali family. As cool as they were, they appeared even more enthusiastic to talk to me.

Hope some day people realize that extremism exists everywhere. Movements (religion, nationalism, etc) typically offer important benefits to society. Yet extremists are frequently attracted to movements, because they can subvert them to their cause. Too much extremism kills the host movement.

This is a good way to look at it. Religion and nationalism are emotional and personal psychological experiences. Extremism enters into them when the person is deeply ashamed, resentful and/or just plain ignorant.

A religion is a car. Cars are very useful. An extremist behind the wheel misuses the car to run people down. That is not a reflection on the car.

That did occur to me. However, using a gun to kill someone is not misuse of the gun -- it's the whole point.

The next big attack we may as well just pack up lady liberty and return to sender. "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it."
