GLI 2010 - Or - Battle of the Endangered Coaches

Re: GLI 2010 - Or - Battle of the Endangered Coaches

If I had to guess, the seating at the MacInnes is probably half empty. By the end of the year, they'll be lucky to fill a 1/3 of the seats. As evidenced by a recent letter to the editor of the local paper, most of the season ticket holders who are still around have finally had enough and are preparing to cut their losses unless Russell goes.

It's not just the quantity, it's the quality that bothers me - especially when attendance drops off. Munn has richly earned its reputation as "The Library". Compare/contrast to 10 years ago.
Oh, except when the Ferrets bring their crowd.

I'll go nuts and say MSU beats CC 6-2, then gets mauled by the Ferrets 6-1.

Let's see...

Period 1

As determined by the outcome of a Rock-Paper-Scissors contest (since it really doesn't matter), Genoe will start. Just like his idol Patrick Roy, the Curse of Game 7 will cause him to knock the puck into his own net to open the scoring for the Wolverines. Less than two minutes later, he'll give up a laugher from center ice to make it 2-0. He'll get the hook and Robinson will come in, only to find out that the team has already quit and promptly hangs him out to dry on the next U of M powerplay to make it 3-0 before he even has a chance to make one save. He also quits. Michigan pretends to let us back into the game when they give us a late powerplay and Seigo snipes one from the blueline. The horn sounds on the first period, and I rush off to purchase my second Molson of the night.

Period 2

*indecipherable beer-induced expletives*

The horn sounds, and it's 7-1 Wolverines. Time for a third Molson.

Period 3

Red calls off the troops. Nevertheless, Robinson demonstrates his own scoring touch when he fires a slapshot down the ice, watches it careen around the boards, back down to his end, and he gets back in net just in time to let it go five-hole. I don the paper bag, and MeanEgirl kicks me in the shins.

8-1 Final

I am later sighted in an alley behind the Lafayette Coney Island, smoking the finest Detroit crack I could lay my hands on, and howling at the moon.

This has been another episode of Completely Baseless Scoring Predictions, © Twitch Boy, used with implied permission.

Wednesday is Paper Bag Fan day right?? I just want to make sure I have one just in case. ;) I don't want to be the only one showing my mug when I'm sitting by a bunch of MTU fans.

Re: GLI 2010 - Or - Battle of the Endangered Coaches

getting my GLI on. wouldn't it be great? beating Michigan? oh yeah.

Re: GLI 2010 - Or - Battle of the Endangered Coaches

I'll make a bold prediction and say we somehow lose to Tech on day two.

Frankly, at this stage, I can't see how we can beat anybody. Tough stuff to do when you can't score goals. Or play any semblance of defense in front of the net. Or get a shot (note the singular) on the power play.

Hopefully CC can win this tournament. I'd like to see them beat State, and then shadow their Colorado brethren and give Michigan fits (Denver has a winning record against the Wolverines, and I believe Air Force is .500).

Re: GLI 2010 - Or - Battle of the Endangered Coaches

well Going out on a limb, I think cc will win the first night but lose the second. I also think there will be some sort of surprise out of the whole thing. I'm not at all sure what michigan will bring with two players gone, but I don't think it will hurt them much.

Re: GLI 2010 - Or - Battle of the Endangered Coaches

Well, CC is the most recent 4th team to win the GLI, it's certainly possible.

Chris Brown is a physical presence on the ice and is the #1 garbage goal scorer on the team, usually on the PP. Losing Merrill hurts more from his offensive perspective. He is still learning how to become a better defensive player, but that will come. So- Michigan will not be the same without these players. But, they should have enough to get past Tech as long as they don't sleep walk out there like they have earlier in the season against similar competition. MSU seems to play better against tougher competition but really crapped the bed against Michigan and Wisconsin. I think CC will handle them considering their offensive skill and MSU's offensive shortcomings.

Michigan/CC would be an interesting final. Flip a coin with the winner scoring at least four goals and maybe an overtime game.

Re: GLI 2010 - Or - Battle of the Endangered Coaches

CC is playing well as of late however. That certainly bodes well for Scotty Owens.

Very few people in Colorado Springs feel Scotty is on the hot seat, I certainly do not. Keep in mind CC has 16 of 26 players either a sophomore or freshman this season with only four seniors on the team. The team has plenty of talent, just young. However, my sources are telling me Scotty will retire sooner then many expect him to. The Big 10 hockey conference may play a part in his decision process.

most likely : CC beats MSU
MI beats Tech
MI beats CC

Agree!

Re: GLI 2010 - Or - Battle of the Endangered Coaches

I'm sad about missing the GLI this year. Along with many people, I believe it's Michigan's to lose. Of course, I won't be too surprised if that happens.

As long as Michigan beats Tech, then I have a chance of making it to the championship game, depending what time I leave Maryland.

Re: GLI 2010 - Or - Battle of the Endangered Coaches

CC and Joe Howe could spoil it for U of M. However, if MSU plays physical and traps well I think they could give CC's young team fits, especially in Jaden Schwartz's absence.

Tech and Michigan won't even be a contest, unless whichever sieve is starting stands on his head while balancing atop a stack of pucks, calculating the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow, and getting hacked by the spirit of Freddy Meyer.

30 years and counting, but really...who's still counting?

It takes a certain amount of ineptitude to be able to go 30 years without winning a tournament that you play in annually, and you only need to string together two wins to get the title. You want more ineptitude, Michigan Tech has only been to the championship game three times in the last 25 years, and it only takes one win to accomplish that.

Add to the fact that Michigan almost always has players that are missing due to the WJC.

If I remember correctly, this season marks the 10 year anniversary of us beating Michigan. We beat them 7-3 that year. How the hell did that happen? http://www.uscho.com/recaps/2000/12/29/late-charging-huskies-stun-wolverines/ and http://www.uscho.com/box/mens-hockey/2000/12/29/michigan-vs-michigan-tech/

The date of that game: December 29th. Exactly 10 years later, right down to the time of the faceoff.

Not that I expect that to mean anything. I am just trying to somehow build good mojo for Tech going into this thing. In the past, we have seen Tech come out and get wins that we "had no business getting". It is too bad that Red is a pretty classy guy. Hey Red, can you get quoted as saying something to the effect of Tech being an embarassment to the tournament and call us a "perennial doormat"? It seemed to work the last time someone did.

I feel like I am pulling at straws to justify why Tech can end the 11 game losing streak tomorrow. But I know it can happen. I won't predict that it will, but the scoreboard will definitely read 0-0 at the start of the game. And as a game is a self-contained series of odd events that add up to the final score, anything can happen.

Re: GLI 2010 - Or - Battle of the Endangered Coaches

I hate being this way. I wish I could just admit defeat and say "ahha I told you so" when Tech gets beaten. but, as always, I have hope. not much, a little bit.
Robostop and Genoe are both capable of standing on their heads.

Re: GLI 2010 - Or - Battle of the Endangered Coaches

and how about the law of probability? the longer the losing streak the more likely we are to win. sometime. right?
