Wasn't it 3.5 years ago that State won a national title? Do Spartan fans really have any reason to be that bitter? The football team is back from the dead, the basketball team is an annual contender, and the hockey program (save for 08/09 when they were injured a lot) has been competitive, even if they aren't winning hardware every season. Am I missing something? Has Comley whizzed in too many people's Cheerios?

EDIT: As for this year's opening round, I'm gonna go with the score of the UM/Tech game being 6-1 or 7-1 Michigan.

I don't know if Michigan can score 6 on anyone. But before the Big Chill, I would not have thought we could put up 5 on anybody, either.

I think Comley is safe for a while, FTR.

I have a solution to this problem. The non-winners at the GLI (so, basically, everyone but Michigan) will have a drawing. Three pieces of paper will go into a hat, one with the name of Russell, one with Owens, one with Comely. The ADs from CC, MTU, and MSU will each get a turn to draw a name out of the hat. That coach is now the head coach at that school, and there is only a 33% chance that you will end up with the coach you have now going into the second half. Nobody really loses out, since you have two successful college hockey coaches and one coach who at one point had major coaching potential as an assistant at a Frozen Four school.

Does this mean that I would trade Russell for Owens or Comely? Well, that is one question that I will not answer here

Well, his last two and a half years he's got an 11th place finish, a 2nd place finish with a two game sweep in the playoffs at the hands of Michigan that kept them out of the NCAA's and he's in 10th this year at the halfway point. Not what Spartan fans are used to.

A Big 10 school that takes hockey seriously (read: not Ohio State in recent years) should be at least a tournament team once in three years. Comley's a few losses away from just that.

Season high so far is 7 against Lake State. Scored 6 against Nebraska-Omaha and 5 at Alaska, vs Notre Dame and the Big Chill.

Period 1

As determined by the outcome of a Rock-Paper-Scissors contest (since it really doesn't matter), Genoe will start. Just like his idol Patrick Roy, the Curse of Game 7 will cause him to knock the puck into his own net to open the scoring for the Wolverines. Less than two minutes later, he'll give up a laugher from center ice to make it 2-0. He'll get the hook and Robinson will come in, only to find out that the team has already quit and promptly hangs him out to dry on the next U of M powerplay to make it 3-0 before he even has a chance to make one save. He also quits. Michigan pretends to let us back into the game when they give us a late powerplay and Seigo snipes one from the blueline. The horn sounds on the first period, and I rush off to purchase my second Molson of the night.

Period 2

*indecipherable beer-induced expletives*

The horn sounds, and it's 7-1 Wolverines. Time for a third Molson.

Period 3

Red calls off the troops. Nevertheless, Robinson demonstrates his own scoring touch when he fires a slapshot down the ice, watches it careen around the boards, back down to his end, and he gets back in net just in time to let it go five-hole. I don the paper bag, and MeanEgirl kicks me in the shins.

Creative. But let's say you win the lottery with Comley. He immediately picks up some high-end talent on the strength of his name, Tech has a great showing in the NCAAs, then he lies to a couple players, sets off infighting and ill-will among alumni and you get four years of mediocrity to follow.

I don't think most people appreciate how far State has sunk in 8 years - a nice run with a hot goalie in 2007 notwithstanding. Kids are leaving early and are lost in minor-league hockey obscurity (with two exceptions). Season ticket holders are bailing left and right. People need to be begged into the arena. Not only has MSU missed the NCAA's 3 straight years, they haven't won a single CCHA playoff series in 4. Two years ago the (rational) excuse was an obscene spate of injuries. What's the excuse this year? Youth? It took me awhile to really get over my infatuation with the championship but I'm ready to see what happens come April. I know one thing, unless a miracle (or a great league tournament run) is in store this team's not playing late into March.

Have you been in Munn Arena when a third of the seats are empty? I assume you don't see that at MacInnes.

If I had to guess, the seating at the MacInnes is probably half empty. By the end of the year, they'll be lucky to fill a 1/3 of the seats. As evidenced by a recent letter to the editor of the local paper, most of the season ticket holders who are still around have finally had enough and are preparing to cut their losses unless Russell goes.

So, we get to the NCAA tournament and then fall into mediocrity? I'll take it. We have already had infighting (players leaving the team and kicked off), and there are plenty of cheesed-off alumni. We have to listen to the injury excuse every single year. Really, if Comely came to Tech, he would actually be starting a bit further along (though one could question how much) than he started with in Marquette in the 70's. So, as it stands now, we get all of the problems that you mention, in addition to 7-9 wins a season in our current situation! Keeping the problems but getting wins is an improvement.

Comely built the NMU program from the ground up, had them in the tournament within 4 seasons and won a national title in Marquette. He was very successful at NMU. He won a title at State. It is very well true that things may have fallen off for State in the last few seasons, but I don't think it is magically because Rick changed or became a bad coach. Over time, a coach may no longer be the right fit for the program, even though he is a good coach, and then things will start to fall apart. It sounds like this is the case here. Much in the same way, has Don Lucia forgotten how to coach at Minnesota?

And yeah, the Mac is (edit: more than) half empty on most nights. We come close to filling it up for Carnival and NMU (sometimes), but we really don't even come close to drawing a full house for the big name schools in our conference (Minnesota/Wisconsin/North Dakota). Even the largest crowds lately feel a lot smaller than they used to. People have worn out of the Michigan Tech culture.

Some programs have good cultures. Tech does not, and it is going to take some major changes to get to the point where the culture is changed. And I think that those changes will be worth it. If it is as you say at State, then you have to worry about falling into the same culture trap, and make changes as necessary. If Mason was still the athletic director, you know that Comely would be safe. With Hollis, you have no idea.
