Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

I'm disavowing being a Millennial.

For one, it's a dorky name, and for two, there may be no more disrespected generation in history. Not even the X-ers caught this much vitriol. JFC, we're going to need a freaking "it gets better" campaign if this keeps up.

The Millennials can't win in society.

Upset because you can't get a job after college? You're a spoiled, entitled kid with no work ethic.

Land a nice job with the federal government because they happened to be the ones hiring? You're a waste of our tax dollars and a drain on society.

Settle for a job flipping burgers to pay the bills until something better comes along? You're a worthless loser who lives in Mom's basement, plays WoW all day, and will never get laid.

Decide to get off your *** and start your own business? You're obviously a spoiled cake eater with rich parents to cover for your mistakes. (That's what inspired this post - the comments on an article I saw on CNBC about a couple 25 year olds who decided to start their own business after graduating instead of messing around with the job hunt.)

Unless you work 120 hour weeks in three different coal mines, killed two hundred people in Iraq with your bare hands, run your own carpentry business with an abacus and a pad of sticky notes, communicate with smoke signals because you don't have a cell phone, and live in the bottom of a well, apparently you're worthless and should just kill yourself.

What ARE we supposed to do, anyway?

It's 'that' time of year. Not sure which of the following commercials grinds my gears more:
  1. Every kiss begins with Kay/He went to Jared
  2. Lexus cars with bows on them
  3. Any commercial featuring some variant of Santa Claus
They are all ****ing annoying.
Who the **** buys a car without telling their spouse, anyway? They're probably just going to trade it in for divorce papers if you're that stupid...

Well that is just ****ing stupid. Why would you care about something so pointless?

This is the "grind my gears" thread, is it not?

I'm just upset that the "Millennial" stereotype gets crapped on by the older generations pretty much 24/7. I'm sick of the vitriol.

I'm pretty sure it's a response to the Boomers being redubbed "The Selfish Generation" in the last few years.

I just don't see it. I've never heard of this generation stuff that you're talking about now, before a couple hours ago. I definitely don't feel like I'm getting crapped on by older generations simply because I'm under 30 years old.

If you are not noticing, then we are doing it right. ;)

Well, in your case it's true, right? :p

Or maybe because I'm an actual productive member of society, I don't get lumped in with the lazy dumbasses that twitch was talking about earlier.

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

You know what grinds my gears?

...Me. I don't learn. I'm in school here, and haven't learned my lesson. I miss too many classes, don't do enough work, don't study enough, and my grades suffer for it. I went through this exact thing at UNH, and barely squeaked by last year here. And to top it all off, I'm unwilling to seek out help. What the **** is wrong with me? I know what I need to do but don't do it.

You might be not the person for traditional schooling. Find out what you truly love to do.

I'm a smart guy. Honor Roll through High School, took Honor Level and AP courses. College has been amazingly rough.

I want to be a pilot, and have looked into a bunch of options. It's unfortunately too expensive for me to be able to afford.

What Brenthoven said-the traditional college route isn't for everyone. And that doesn't mean you have to spend your life digging ditches either.

Another option: pay a visit to your school's counseling center. They have seen this before, and you won't be the last person they talk to about it either. They can help you refocus and find the right motivation if that's what you need, or work with you to find what's best for you schooling- or life-decision-wise.

You know what? Not being a smart-arse, or anything, but I love being a forklift jockey. I was on the Honor Roll and took AP classes, too. Graduated in the top 5% of my class (450~ or so). Did the college thing. Hated it. Quit school, joined up with warehousing. LOVE. 17 years and counting; 7 years with one company, 10 years with (most likely) the company I'll retire from.

It requires the skills I'm good at, requires a lot of self-discipline, and requires a mind that can think a few steps ahead. I'll trade riches + student debt for a job I love and make a living off of, every time. No question about it.
