Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

Congrats to the Ice Knights on their first ever NCAA victory!

Looking forward to our first ever match up with the Cadets on Sunday. The students will be on break so the crowd will be sparse unfortunately. Would have been cool to give Norwich the proper 2000+ fan welcome to the Ira!

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

Just wondering how many Laker fans will be at the game to support the Knights. It would be nice to have them there to give the Knights a boost and to show support for the SUNYAC. For I will be rooting for the Knights. Just a very far away thought that I have also seen on the D-3 site was how would a all SUNY final sound.

Might even have some Cardinal fans in attendance pro-Knights....

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

Geneseo v. Oswego in the championship...who would Platty fans root for?

Oswego of course...it's like your brother playing for a different team. Actually, the Oswego v Plattsburgh history may be older than some of your brothers?

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

Geneseo v. Oswego in the championship...who would Platty fans root for?

Knights win 4-3 in OT on a Collins wrist shot from the left circle....

6 months later, a member of the Geneseo student body breaks into the Geneseo Financial Aid office and copies documents that leads to a list of NCAA violations and Geneseo receives an (*) next to their name. Oswego goes on to believe they've won a National Title yet again.

Well, we would but we already have a date ;)

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

Geneseo can win this game for sure. The key is to keep that top line of Jahnke, Duszynski & Gorman off the score sheet. Norwich is good on defense but can lapse on occasion. Goalie is good, solid. Play your game, use your speed and passing and exploit a couple of the lower, younger lines. I can't believe Geneseo has never played Norwich.

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

What are the ice dimensions? Watching on-line yesterday, it seemed that it was wide like an Olympic rink, but not as long.

I think Genny has a ton of firepower that Norwich has not seen this yr???,and that will be the thing for Norwich to watch..that said genny should win this if their netminder does his job and they stay disciplined..The Cadets big line is very good and has all the experience on the team, after that not much experience ,but hey look at Oswego so far a well. This should be a fast game with some great play...Genny takes it if their goalie shows up..

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights 13-14 Season: Where memories linger and our thoughts remain

You have to dictate the play to Norwich. Their whole game is built around puck possession. Get 25 - 30 shots on goal and you stand an excellent chance of winning. If you let Norwich possess the puck, your goose is cooked.

Watch Oswego - Norwich in last year's semifinal. Perfect game plan and execution by Oswego.

Were they looking ahead in their game against Nichols? While they definitely dominated possession at times, they took a lot of low-risk shots, and didn't look as good as I expected. I think this is a coin toss at best, as all the q-final games should be. Great weekend of hockey upcoming, I'm glad that 2 of the games were moved to Sunday, allows me to watch them all. Good luck to Genny, I hope you lose by a touchdown. :D

Thought you Geneseo fans might enjoy this. I'm biased and think the Cadets will win but I also think it will be a very good game. Good luck.

SUNDAY’S STORYLINE: Norwich (20-6-3) enters Sunday’s NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal fresh off a 8-2 first round victory over MASCAC champion Salem State on Wednesday. Geneseo (22-6-0) won its first-ever NCAA Tournament game on Thursday with a 3-2 victory over ECAC Northeast champion Nichols. The Cadets are making their 15th NCAA Tournament appearance after receiving an at-large bid for the second straight season, following a 2-1 loss to Babson in the ECAC East Championship.

Geneseo also qualified for the NCAA Tournament courtesy of one of the three at-large Pool C bids following a 7-6 loss to Oswego in the SUNYAC title game. This year marks the Knights’ fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and first since back-to-back appearances in 2005 and 2006.
Geneseo and Norwich had one common opponent this season in Plattsburgh. The Cadets lost 4-2 at home to Plattsburgh on Jan. 14, while Geneseo split with the Cardinals. Geneseo lost 4-1 on the road on Nov. 8, but beat Plattsburgh 5-3 at home on Jan. 31.

WHAT’S AT STAKE: The winner of Sunday’s game will advance to the semifinal round to face the winner of St. Norbert and Adrian in Lewiston, Maine, the host for the 2014 NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Championship. Norwich has made 11 NCAA D-III Frozen Four appearances, including four straight coming into this season. Geneseo has never made the Frozen Four.

THE SERIES: Sunday will mark the first-ever meeting between Norwich and Geneseo in men’s hockey. Geneseo will become the sixth SUNYAC team that Norwich has faced in its history. The Cadets have never played Buffalo State, Fredonia and Brockport.

THE HISTORY: Geneseo’s varsity program began in 1975-76 under Paul Duffy who served as the head coach all the way up until 2001. Norwich’s varsity program dates back to 1909 with the Cadets accumulating 961 all-time victories over that span.

THE COACHES: Norwich is led by Mike McShane, who is in his 19th year at the helm of the program and has compiled a 410-109-30 record. He recorded his 600th all-time victory two seasons ago on Jan. 27, 2012 in a win over Southern Maine becoming just the ninth coach at any level in NCAA history to accomplish the feat. He is 653-327-67 all-time in 33 seasons between Norwich, St. Lawrence and Providence.
Geneseo is led by 1997 alumnus Chris Schultz, who is in his eighth season at his alma mater. He won his 100th game earlier this season with a 4-1 win over Potsdam on Nov. 9. He has recorded a 119-84-7 record in his tenure at the helm of the Knights program. Schultz has won back-to-back SUNYAC Coach of the Year honors and three out of the last four seasons.

ABOUT THE CADETS: Norwich is led by a trio of seniors in Travis Janke, Shane Gorman and Chris Duszynski. Janke (16-22-38) and Duszynski (18-9-27) are each coming off scoring twice in the Cadets’ 8-2 win over Salem State. Janke also picked up his 100th career assist in the game, which ranks seventh in NU history. He has 154 points in his career, ranking him 13th all-time. Janke was also named to the ECAC East All-Conference 1st Team for the second year in a row. Gorman (8-23-31) has established a new single-season career high as well and leads the Cadets in assists.

Sophomore defenseman Ryan Whitell (4-21-25) was named to the ECAC East All-Conference Second Team and is tied for fifth nationally in points by a blue liner. Freshman William Pelletier (10-11-21) rounds out the Cadets’ top-five scorers. Rookie Nick Pichette (7-3-10) is also coming off a two-goal game against Salem State.

In goal, Chris Czarnota has emerged as NU’s go-to goalie, starting the last 13 games in net. He has compiled a 10-3-1 overall record with a 1.43 goals against average, .911 save percentage and four shutouts. In his career, he is 31-6-3 for a .812 winning percentage.

ABOUT THE KNIGHTS: Geneseo is led by the SUNYAC Player of the Year Zachary Vit. Vit leads the team with 18 goals and 11 assists for 29 points. He has scored 124 points in 107 career games.
The Knights also rely on a trio of junior forwards in Tyler Brickler (15-14-29), Justin Scharfe (10-19-29) and Ryan Stanmir (11-15-26). Brickler leads Geneseo with seven power play goals and four game-winning goals. Scharfe was named to the SUNYAC All-Conference Third Team and Stanmir is in the midst of a breakout junior season, doubling his career-point total from his first two seasons. Scharfe and Brickler each scored in Geneseo’s win over Nichols.

Freshman forward Michael Collins rounds out Geneseo’s top-five scorers with 13 goals and 10 assists for 23 points on his way to earning SUNYAC All-Conference Second Team honors.

In goal, junior Bryan Haude and sophomore Nick Horrigan have split the time almost evenly. Haude is 9-5-0 with a 3.04 goals against average and a .897 save percentage. Horrigan is 13-1-0 with a 2.20 goals against average and a .928 save percentage. Horrigan made 31 saves in Geneseo’s 3-2 win over Nichols.

Ice Hockey Tangles With Norwich In NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo hosts Norwich in a quarterfinal game of the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Tournament Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinals next Friday (March 21) to play the advancing team from Saturday's quarterfinal between St. Norbert (Wisc.) and Adrian (Mich.). The semifinals and national championship game (March 22) will be played at Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.

The Knights (22-6) defeated Nichols, 3-2, on Thursday to pick up their first-ever victory in the NCAA Tournament. First-year forward Connor Anthoine tallied a goal and an assist while sophomore defenseman Nate Brown added a pair of assists in the win. Sophomore goalie Nick Horrigan was credited with 31 saves to improve to 13-1 this season in the victory.

The Knights received an at-large bid to the tournament after compiling a 21-6 regular-season record, including a 14-2 mark in the SUNYAC to finish first in the regular-season standings. The Knights shut-out Buffalo State, 2-0, in the SUNYAC semis, before falling in a wild championship game, 7-6, to Oswego last Saturday in a game that saw the Knights come back from a 5-1 deficit late in the second period with four goals over the next 6:30 of playing time to knot the game, 5-5, 5:23 into the third period.

Senior forward Zachary Vit (18G, 11A) was named the SUNYAC Player of the Year and a first-team All-SUNYAC pick on Tuesday, leading five Knights that were named conference all-stars. First-year forward Stephen Collins (13G, 10A) landed second-team honors, while junior forward Justin Scharfe (10G, 19A), junior defenseman Jack Caradonna (3G, 16A) and Horrigan all copped third-team recognition.

Head Coach Chris Schultz was named the SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive season and for the third time in the last four years. Geneseo is playing in its first NCAA Tournament since making back-to-back appearances in 2005 and 2006, as well as its fourth overall showing after the program qualified for its first NCAA appearance in 1990.

Geneseo, which put together only the fifth 20-win season in the 39-year history of the program, is one win short of the single-season record 23 wins compiled by the teams in 1989-90 (23-9-2) and 1990-91 (23-4-3).

ABOUT NORWICH
Norwich enters Sunday's game in the hunt for its fifth-straight and 12th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament semifinals. The Cadets are coming off a 8-2 victory over Salem State on Wednesday in a first-round home tilt that saw the squad build an 8-1 lead through two periods, including five unanswered goals in the second. Senior forward Chris Duszynski and senior forward Travis Janke each scored two goals and an assist, while first-year forward Nick Pichette added two goals to lead the attack. Senior goalie Chris Czarnota made 11 stops in just over 49 minutes of work to improve to 10-3-1 this season with a 1.43 GAA and a .911 SV%.

Named a first-team All-ECAC-East pick, Janke leads the squad with 38 points (16G, 22A), including the 100th assist of his career in Wednesday's victory, while his 154 career points lists him 13th-all time at the academy.

Sophomore defenseman Ryan Whitell (4G, 21A) was named a second-team ECAC-East All-Star and is tied for fifth nationally in scoring among blue-liners.

The Cadets received an at-large bid to their 15th NCAA Tournament following a 2-1 loss to Babson in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East Championship game last Saturday. Norwich lost to its only common opponent with Geneseo, falling to visiting Plattsburgh, 4-2 (Jan. 14).

Norwich is led by Mike McShane, who is in his 19th year at the helm of the program and has compiled a 410-109-30 record.
