Gender Studies I

Re: Gender Studies I

That you've had a rough couple of years and could use a hug.

Take as long as you need.

And when I'm not with them, my very best friend is a 67 year old trans woman named Shelby. She's more than my best friend; she's my Strictly Platonic Lifemate. Ever look at someone and realize "I'm supposed to have you in my life?" That's her.

Re: Gender Studies I

I noticed something: when I first came out and even started hormones, most of the conservatives in my life were like "okay, cool. We may not understand, but we support you."

Then I gained confidence and started speaking out.

The conservatives started saying "stay pretty. Pass as cis. BUT WOULD YOU PLEASE SHUT THE HELL UP?"

I have no plans to shut up any time soon. Not when people in Holland (MI) think such a thing as "heterophobia" exists.

In short, JK Rowling has been on twitter lately saying "I love trans people, but trans women aren't women."

Re: Gender Studies I

I was going to say leave the poor old broad alone but, Jesus, she's younger than I.

Nature has a cure for the inability to adapt to changes in culture. Built-in life span.

I doubt any, let alone many, prominent black civil rights leaders in the 60s would have accepted LGBTQ appeals for respect. Many pioneering women's rights activists did not accept gays. Many pioneering gay activists did not accept trans people.

They fought, they won, they then became the oppressive status quo, then they died.

Someday we will win, we will become the oppressive status quo, and we will die.

In 200 years people will look back at us with horror for whatever it is we're doing right now that's horrible that we don't even know.

That's the way it works. Do your best and sleep the sleep of the just. All we can do is move the ball down the field in the humane direction, and fight the right's attempt to push it back towards their supernatural dominance hellscape.

She's been doing this for awhile. I never had a desire to read Harry Potter before; I definitely don't have a desire to read Harry Potter now.

Re: Gender Studies I

I never had any desire to read them. I got everything I needed from the 10% version, A Wizard of Earthsea, 40 years ago. The 1% version, The Glass Bead Game, is still percolating in my head.

Re: Gender Studies I

And the amusing thing about all this is that trans people have tried to tell the cis Rowling is a TERF for years, but we kept being told we didn't know what we were talking about.

Do you believe us now?

Re: Gender Studies I

Even after reading her full Twitter rant, some people will still be like "she's not a TERF! You're just making stuff up! You don't know what you're talking about!"

Part of being an ally/accomplice means sitting down and listening to us. If you're not going to listen, get out of here. If you're going to speak over me and speak for me, get out of here.

People telling me Rowling is not a TERF is why I rooted for Magneto.

Re: Gender Studies I

I'm not arguing she's not TE.

And you're cis. I realize you have opinions, and you are entitled to them... but right now, trans people need you to stop talking and listen. Don't claim to be an ally if you're not going to listen. Don't claim to be an ally if all you're going to do is argue or debate every time we bring something like this up. Don't claim to be an ally if you're not going to leave your safe space and spend time with us, close enough to be hit by the rocks aimed straight at us.

Trans people have special knowledge as to what constitutes TE. On that we all need to shut up and listen to you.

But trans people don't get to define who are Fs and who are RFs. That isn't their exclusive baby, it's feminists' writ large.

It is not cissplaining to say that trans people do not have special knowledge concerning brick laying or penalty killing. My argument is I doubt most feminists would regard Rowling as a radical feminist, therefore she is a trans-exclusionary feminist, not a trans-exclusionary radical feminist. If I was saying something regarding the trans-exclusionary part of that you'd be perfectly right telling me to shut up. But regarding the rest, trans and feminists have the same bona fides.

Re: Gender Studies I

Not up to you, you cisgender heterosexual. The Advocate, who is run by cis people, called her a TERF.

Dear cis people: if you're arguing with us trans people about if JK Rowling is a TERF, you've already sided with her. Every god **** day I'm starting to think Thanos and Magneto both made valid points at least, and it's because of people like you.

Go get me some coffee, since you're not listening and talking to me like I don't know what I'm talking about, you sweaty tomato.

Re: Gender Studies I

If The Advocate (which is run by LGBTQ, including trans, not just cis) calls her a TERF, then she's a TERF.

As for the rest, your anger is completely misdirected. Being trans does not remove the constraint of being logical. You have special knowledge within certain spheres, but you are not magically omniscient.
